/site/ civility Fen!GUARD5kv/UCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 4642

Now that i have your attention with this image, i'd like to address /site/'s standards.

Or rather, it's current lack thereof.

/site is, and i quote: "The board for discussing site related issues, questions, concerns, and suggestions."

There is discussion, but there is also a lot of ad hominem attacks and uncivil behaviour in general being thrown around.

Towards the end of /meta/'s life, we tried board-only bans for people who couldn't keep themselves civil while discussing things.

Going forward, i'm going to start issuing /site/-only bans for people who: Use ad hominem arguments, do not contribute to the discussion at hand or do so in a belligerent manner.

ad hominem
ad ˈhɒmɪnɛm/
adverb & adjective
adverb: ad hominem; adjective: ad hominem

(of an argument or reaction) directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining.
"an ad hominem response"

belligerent
bəˈlɪdʒ(ə)r(ə)nt/
adjective
adjective: belligerent
1.
hostile and aggressive.
"the mood at the meeting was belligerent"
synonyms: hostile, aggressive, threatening, antagonistic, pugnacious, bellicose, truculent, confrontational, argumentative, quarrelsome, disputatious, contentious, militant, combative;

Due to the slightly nebulous nature of this new guideline / ruling (I.e: "Hostile and aggressive" can be simple misinterpretation), these bans will not last for more than an hour, and you will not be permanently banned from /site/ unless you are excessively gathering such bans.
They are merely "Tone it down a notch" aids, delivered in the most effective manner to somebody that most likely will not be in the mood to listen or agree with a verbal warning.

For clarification, this applies to everyone, right? Not just the person that "started it"?

Fen!!Shining ArmorCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 4664

>>4658
Everyone, including mods.

The only people this doesn't apply to is me and mac, as we're the only ones who can completely avoid it, while i can temporarily delete a mods account if they go full retard.
I can technically do that to mac too, but as he has server access its pretty pointless.

In mine and his case, it's purely an honour system.

Why is belligerence an issue if it's for the sake of crushing the pervasive currents of ideology? In order to overthrow the extant power structures one must rally against them, often leading to the guillotine. Inherently, revolutions are unstable, by definition, through lack of security, a breakdown of the social order. They have a very legitimate basis too. People feel discriminated against and oppressed, or without the right to liberty if you will. When masses revolt they take arms and vengeance against their previous oppressors.

"Power and violence are opposites; where the one rules absolutely, the other is absent. Violence appears where power is in jeopardy, but left to its own course it ends in power's disappearance."

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

I mean...
I can only, really, sort-of understand the caution against ad hominems, but you might as well ban all fallacy then since it inherently doesn't contribute to the discussion. And yet, even if something is fallacious it doesn't mean the conclusion is untrue. You'd be using the fallacist's fallacy here to argue against that; "fallacious arguments can arrive at true conclusions, so this is an informal fallacy of relevance."

It's like, if I called you a fascist, which you're pretty much being. It doesn't necessarily offer anything to my argument, it only defines its sides.

I know I've had issues with this in the past. Recently there was a hot people image thread. Someone couldn't control themselves and had to say "No landwhales" After protest of this I was informed fat people are diseased, disgusting, and should appreciate the abuse they received as it would motivate them to become thinner.

Now in the past the response was to shun the responder for not ignoring the baiter to the point those who repeatedly reported baiters were permabanned from the site.

What I would like to know is if we want this site to continue enforcing the strategy of ignoring baiters, and telling people who stand up against them they ought to ignore them. I brought up this particular incident because even reddit has cracked down by removing a fat hate subreddit. I also unless I am ignorant of it, unaware of other groups of people told that they should be grateful for abuse.

I just want to know where this site stands on this. Clearly permabanning people who wanted a halfway peaceful site just to stop them complaining doesn't work. Talking to the baiters doesn't work as they usually cry persecution and freedom of speech. I am fine if people want to create their own thread for fat hate circlejerking, hell, why not make it a serial? Containment seems to have worked well for Reddit. I just don't see why a thread apprecating human beauty should be ruined by someone wanting to proudly display their ugly soul.

I'm prepared to be blamed for reacting, told it was my fault for not ignoring it, that I derailed the thread. It makes me question why bother to care at all. I mean all it leads to is punishment and humiliation right? Is that what we want on this site? People being afraid to care?

"/site is, and i quote: "The board for discussing site related issues, questions, concerns, and suggestions."

Where else am I supposed to discuss people acting hostile? It said in OP'S post site is where you're supposed to bring up these issues. Perhaps you failed to read OP's thtead. I don't see how permitting a toxic environment to thrive on Ponychan is off topic according to OP'S post. How is dealing with the problem of open hostility towards fat people not having anything to do with this thread?

Where am I supposed to discuss this issue. Or should I remain silent and just accept that this site harbors bigotry and apparently nowhere is the right forum to bring it up?

This is a concern and it says in OP'S post this is the place to discuss concerns. I don't understand other than this being an attempt to silence me why you would claim a site concern doesn't belong in this thread.

>Clearly permabanning people who wanted a halfway peaceful site just to stop them complaining doesn't work.

Citation or evidence please.

>I'm prepared to be blamed for reacting, told it was my fault for not ignoring it, that I derailed the thread

How did you react? Did you report it and move on? Did you argue? Did you start yelling at people? Did you retort with a higher quantity of vitriol then what was shown to you?

Again, appeals to emotion aren't a thing that actually work ever, and neither or failing to include relevant information to make your position look better.

>>5765
Yes /site/ is for discussing what people consider to be issues, if you want to discuss this you are more then welcome to make a thread about it, which I will actually respond to.

Instead I've only picked out the parts of your post that are actually bullshit and meant to evict an emotionally response in people so they'll be more inclined to believe you.

Dear mods

It seems like your standards on bans tend to be either one extreme or the other, you either ban posters for one second to half an hour, or ban them permanently, in short your either too lenient or too harsh.

If I may make a suggestion, what if you were to find some easy medium and ban people here anywhere from say either a day, week, month or year depending on what they did or keep doing rather then banning them permanently all together?

So like in my situation I basically had been mean toward everyone since may 23rd 2014 and got perma banned for it, which I understand why but couldn't I at worst have gotten just a months time banned from here instead? Please? Obviously I'm not going to do this again after this.(USER WAS SENT TO THE MOON FOR THIS POST)

As far as I know the ban system is progressive, so they're already doing what this guy wants.

As for the permaban status, it's in my opinion that permabans should be overturned if the banned shows genuine contrition and good behavior. Having been banhammered from The Roundstable myself a couple years ago, I can attest how horrible it feels to let yourself get carried away, leading to the ban, and how much I wish I could turn back time. No matter what I've said or pleaded since then, their admins have completely ignored me, and I hope that's not something the mods would do here.

I don't know this dude, but I hope there's a path back for him, if he's deserving.
