/site/ - Site Issues

The board for discussing site related issues, questions, concerns, and suggestions.
Name?

This field is optional. You can choose any name you want, or you can post anonymously by leaving this field empty.

Tripcodes are a way to identify yourself between posts without having to register with the site. To use a tripcode, enter your name as ‹name›#‹key›.You can choose anything you want as the key—it is private and will never be shown to other posters or stored on the server. For example:

Rarity#bestpony → Rarity!.4PK7yxdII

If you want a tripcode containing specific words, you can download a program designed to search for tripcodes, such as Tripcode Explorer.

Email
?

Entering an e-mail is optional.

There are also code words you can enter here which perform certain actions when you submit your post.

  • sage — lets you post without bumping a thread.
  • nonoko — uses the original post behavior to redirect to the board index.

These can be used at the same time as an e-mail address by typing ‹email›#‹action›.

You can also use Skype names in place of an e-mail. The notation is the same as a link to a username on skype itself, which is skype:‹username›

I've actually never had a problem with graham before, but i agree that this whole thing he's doing is retarded now. We don't need the entire front page of /chat/ to be propaganda threads.

Since our glorious leaders obstinately refused to ban the polshitters chat is gonna be propaganda regardless, might as well let Graham trigger them too.

true. i'm not for creating "safe spaces" like that, but at the same time i was more broadly wondering if the whole "baiting will not be tolerated" thing that got brought up here multiple times(at various points throughout ponychan's site history i might add) was ever actually doctrine, because i remember people getting bans for baiting and shit in the past.

sorry, but graham's behavior made me wonder about wether or not excessive baiting was ever against the rules(i'm sure it was at some point, inb4 "le nazimods" meme).

Just bring back /pol/ /dis/ and then ban them all and give them their own place to shitpost. Alternatively name it /bait/.

I know the point was getting rid of useless boards, but as much as everyone constantly complains about the /pol/shit threads people still post in them so I don't even know what to say anymore. You could hide and ignore them but /chat/ doesn't really have much value right now in the first place so you'd just end up hiding most the board.

You guys know that's never going to happen, right? They're not gonna fill every page with every post having a unique user ID that persists across threads (thereby removing the ability to change names for fun and see who catches on) just so a few people can filter the FOUR PEOPLE in the history of the site who have changed names to dodge filters.

You wouldn't need to reveal the user ID. You'd just need to let users select a post and filter all posts by whoever made that post.

Of course, it would be possible to painstakingly determine who wrote which posts by toggling this on and off.

Meme Monk!ScyphTlOY6Country code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 11235

Maybe the ID doesn't have to display on the page, but it DOES have to be part of the page's data. Which means instead of toggling, you could just inspect element or something.

You could do the filtering on the backend, in which case the ID doesn't need to be sent. You could probably also get away with client-side filtering just by obscuring the data in some fashion. That wouldn't be secure, but it'd be secret enough not to be worth cracking.

Realistically, this is all probably too much hassle to ever happen, whether or not it's a good idea. But it's not impossible.

Only if you're an idiot. Fourty minutes, tops, if you actually know what you're doing.

Edit: I assume by backend he means cooperating with the backend. Yeah, sure. Have the JavaScript fix the page according to backend-provided posts that need deletion. So it's a frontend solution.

Right, that's sort of what I was thinking. Real filtering on the backend would be the site creating different versions of the page to send to each user, based on the list of IPs filtered by that IP.

That's functionally very close to the filtering that's already implemented. This would likely only take a few lines of code.

Edit: Woops, just woke up, misunderstood Meme Monk.

@Starshine Eh, more than a few. A new servlet, a new db table, and a new JavaScript file would be required. I'd estimate the PHP end would be more or less 50-60 and the JavaScript to be about 60.

Remember that you're also including the functionality of adding ignored users and removing ignored users to and from the server.

Though, it's not 'functionally very close', no matter if you're talking about back-end or front-end. Back-end is simply totally 100% different in every way imagineable (and would require at least >400 lines of code and a library), but the front-end solution would be quite different from what we have today. The current filtering that's already implemented checks for a post with a name that you ignored that's stored in your cookies, and then deletes the post. This is an entirely different solution-- you'd be sending the server the post you want to not see its author again, and then the server adds it. Whenever you access a page, the client will ask the server if any of the posts belong to a person you ignored. The server checks the database of ignored IPs or browser fingerprints against the list of posts you provided. It would return a list of post ids that require removal. The JavaScript removes all the posts with matching IDs. Yeah, the mods can technically use a system like this to create shadow bans, lel.

In the end, it's totally meaningless though, because you might as well just add IDs. I could just ignore an anon or some user I'm betting is an anon and see which posts disappear / if their posts disappear. Might as well implement IDs.

Why would you need a new JavaScript file? I'm actually not sure how the current filter works, nor am I familiar with PHP (other than having heard that it's held together with popsicle sticks and rubberbands and to avoid it at all costs), but wouldn't you just need to add a column to the existing database and another conditional to the existing filter code?

Mostly for structure integrity. You don't put 50 unrelated Javascript functions in one file. Generally speaking. Unless you're stupid or apathetic or work alone. Most commonly, all three at once.

I say 'new file' because it is most probably wholy unrelated to any existing functionality. You'd need to query a PHP file on page load, on top of whenever PCX gets new posts to make sure those posts aren't by someone getting ignored. The last is modifying existing code, but most of the rest is independant functionality.

It also wouldn't be a column, it would be an entirely new table. One column is insufficient for storing the ignored and ignor..ee? Even if it were, it would be surely irrelevant to any other table.

We already have "ignored and ignoree" stuff implemented though, don't we? Wouldn't it be enough to query for the IP address and add that to (what I assume is) the if-else or switch block that handles all the other reasons why a post might be ignored? Is that a misinterpretation of how the filter works, or an oversimplification of how IP addresses are stored compared to names/tripcodes?

We don't. It's a front-end implementation, and it's wholly different.

i.e.:

search for all posts in the thread that contain name <>

versus

send all posts in thread to servlet, remove all posts matching id

The only relevant part is 'remove', and that's just one line.

Well, shoot.
I think I may have also lost sight of how this discussion started; I've actually thought I was arguing in favor of the frontend solution you suggested over the backend solution described by Scyph this whole time, but looking at my initial post it seems the opposite. I should probably pay closer attention.

No, this is the frontend solution I described.

I don't know where to begin describing the backend solution. It would require nearly a complete rewrite of the codebase-- might as well develop your own imageboard software.

I mean, a pure frontend solution indicates that all the necessary data to evaluate the operation is already sent to the user. This is not the case if the staff want to keep IP addresses hidden. Furthermore, this is also not the case if some kind of indicator or unique signature or hash of the IP is sent to the user, as that is essentially an id that is available to the user.

The closest thing that can be achieved, i.e. ignoring users based on ID without actually having the ID be visible, is to ask the server which posts to ignore. The server will check what IP address you have ignored, and then tell you which posts need to be removed from the end page.

Conceptually, it is the same. You are removing posts belong to a specific user. The current solution removes posts based on the poster's name. The closest possible thing to what the OP wanted is to have the server simply tell you what posts need to be removed, but for this, you will need both a back-end servlet, a new (a rewrite of the current) mechanism that ignores users, and a new db table.

Dude get over yourself. Considering that vitriolic racism, harassment, and general cunt behavior are all allowed and endorsed by the moderators, Graham can basically do as he pleases. Stop autistically screeching every time he makes a political thread. I know you think you're being "balanced" or whatever, but considering that we have literal nazis dominating discussion, someone with far left tendencies isn't going to be the worst thing ever.

I never see you complaining about the painfully obvious political bait threads other people make though. Funny that.
