The G4 show deteriorated a lot in its last years, and it's easy to forget how wonderful it was at its best in the first few seasons. That best sets the bar pretty high for G5. For me, maybe the high points of FIM were a couple of the songs -- particularly "At the Gala." Ingram never wrote anything better than-- or as good as, imho -- the instrumentals for that number. The real miracle of FIM was one could find a gem in almost every episode, even to the end. While not my favorite episode by a long shot, this one song by Danial Ingram made the rest of the episode fade away.

I think Season 4 was actually my highest point. I really enjoyed the overarching arc and character development and callbacks and music. I'm pretty each to please though and don't subscribe to the whole continual downfall theory. I was able to enjoy the show all the way through.

The high point of the show was the S2 finale, but IMO the high point of the fandom was the SDCC where they showed the preview for season 4.

I don't hear this enough but absolutely agree. There were high points and low points for me in every season. It probably helps that I hopped on the train late but if I were forced to pick a favorite season it would probably be 7. I don't think it particularly had more high points for me than any other season but the high points it had were the highest for me.

It was the same for me, I enjoyed the entire show. My favorite seasons were definitely 4 to 7 (plus 2).

5 maybe being my favorite with episodes like Amending Fences and Crusaders of the Lost Mark being in my top 5. Not to forget it introduced Glim Glam.

The highest point was the Season 2 premiere, and it was a fantastic time to be around. Then season 3 started the downward plunge from which the show never recovered.

Sounds about right, though there were A- and even A+-level episodes every so often in the ensuing seasons-- "Too Many Pinkie Pies," "Power Ponies," "Simple Ways," "Filli Vanilli," "The Cutie Map," "Tanks for the Memories," "The Cutie Re-Mark," and some others. It's not a long list, but the show didn't just plunge off the edge of a cliff.

But it never regained the magic of S2, either.

Okay, let's start with #1 and work down. "Too Many Pinkie Pies." The basic gimmick-- multiplication of bodies for multiplication of experience. FunFunFunFunFun. Pinkie's sadness and the hoof in the dust. Watching paint dry. The struggle for existence. The G1 pony face. Friendship is worth any sacrifice-- even, for PP, the loss of fun. What's not to like here? And it sets things up for the escaped clone in the restaurant in "Saddle Row Review" -- one of the absolute top moments of the whole series.

Oh yeah, and popping fingers out of the clone hoof.

Well uh, all of that stuff, pretty much. Whether it's just stupid in concept, or a sensible idea executed piss-poorly, every element was pretty much hot garbage. But rather than explain why each part is not fun, let me just run something else by you and see if it helps.

Remember when it's shown onscreen that the clones, for whatever reason, don't know Pinkie's friends very well? And remember that very central part of Pinkie's character, where she knows every pony in town down to their birthdays and preferences? What if instead of a completely vapid, arbitrary, and deliberately boring scene like watching paint dry (which Twilight had absolutely no reason to believe should work), they instead did some kind of quiz to prove which Pinkie is actually everyone's friend?

Which admittedly none of the other ponies were aware of (except Fluttershy who didn't realize it). So Twilight would have no reason to run a quiz, she'd have to expect them all knowing the answers.

That's correct in the episode, but if we're rewriting it to make more sense already, then it isn't any kind of leap to have them just notice that very evident fact about the clone horde.

Are you complaining that a different and less funny script could have been written by changing the assumptions? Pfft. You aren't convincing me.

On to "Power Ponies." I loved the basic concept. I loved the beauty-products tropes like the Hair Spray of Doom. I loved the pink-and-white streaks Fillisecond makes -- a really lovely and ingenious representation of lightning speed. And how could anyone not love Flutterhulk? The whole episode is a gorgeous sendup of stupid superhero conventions.

Changing the assumptions? How about removing them instead? You only think it's less funny because you haven't seen it. The "watching paint dry" is intended by design to be boring, so if you can find so much entertainment in it then you have no grounds to say some kind of quiz would be less fun. And boy, this isn't even getting into the rest of the episode. Remember that part where Spike stumbles onto a secret compartment in the library that has exactly the book they need, and it just never comes up again?

As for Power Ponies, what a spectacular mess of fake superhero pastiches. The writers must have literally never read a comic book in order to think any of that nonsense was some kind of homage to tropes that actually exist. The villain is possibly the only part that comes close to being comic-like, and the episode certainly isn't smart about it. The heroes all somehow manage to be derivative, useless, and boring at the same time, while Flutterhulk in particular is both grossly awful in concept and execution and a deus ex machina. Even the episode's moral is flubbed!

Speaking of Filisecond, everyone else on the team was struggling with their abilities except her. That means she could have resolved the conflict from the very start, but seems to deliberately run into both a tornado AND immobilizing hairspray when there was just no reason for her to other than to not solve the conflict.

Right. And Pinkie Pie also could have refrained from leaping into the comic, thereby avoiding all her problems. And if only the Mane Six had come into the library ten seconds later, they wouldn't have seen Spike getting sucked in. They would have stayed safe, and Spike's disappearance would have been a mystery forever. I wonder why the writers didn't go with those options?

I think you should argue about The Last Roundup, one of my favorite episodes. That's the one where Applejack abandons her family and refuses to talk to her friends until they weaponize Pinkie Pie.

No argument here. Great episode. I loved the demonstration that ponies have kidneys. (Nits to be picked there: long-distance pony trains don't have sanitary facilities? Really?)

And you know what I thought was really beautiful? The cloud of dust at 17:22.

But -- it's Season 2. We were talking about the downhill slope that followed "Magical Mystery Cure." Now there's an episode that I really hated. I never felt the same way about the show after Twilight sprouted wings.

Every moment of that episode is so messed up, and it certainly didn't have to be awful. They just didn't feel like putting in the effort to have it make sense.

What probably gets me the most is how Twilight becomes a princess for literally no other reason than because Celestia says so. It isn't because of the wings, it isn't because of friendship, no one else seems to have been in on the decision (like Luna for instance) and even Twilight herself doesn't even get to have a say in it. Celestia just gives her wings and unilaterally decides she's a princess now.

That's the whole idea, the episode is all built around this dissonance between what we know and what we're shown. We know Twilight never had friends in Canterlot, but her mind sees it all so differently. It's about how she's changed and how she hasn't, and how she's wrong about both. Think about how Twilight hears Moondancer started having problems after that little get-together, and immediately assumes it was her fault. That's some grade-a egotism right there, just stunning narcissism. She was always self-centered, but it really shines there.

Something that has always bothered me about "The Last Roundup"--

AJ drives the stagecoach across the railroad tracks a split second before the train rushes over the road, leaving Twi and RD trapped on the other side. The stagecoach ponies say in chorus, "Lady, you are trouble!" and gallop off with the coach, leaving AJ standing there feeling smug because Twi and RD can't get at her. But they solve the problem by leaping over the train, dragging the wagon behind them through the air.

That train is only about 16 coaches long. Why don't Twi and RD just wait ten seconds for it to pass, and then continue chasing AJ? And why are they still dragging that empty wagon, when Rarity and Pinkie have fallen out back along the road somewhere?

Also: why aren't RD, AJ, and Twi worried about Rarity and Pinkie? Why don't they go back to find them and make sure they're okay?

The more I think about all this, the less sense it makes.

Another little thing I really liked about "Too Many Pinkie Pies"-- the 180° rotation of the background as Pinkie passes through the Mirror Pool and becomes her own clone: Pinkie Pie clones herself - Full scene .

Shy and RD. No wings for Twi. Season two. Well, I would wager jumping the train was Dash's idea, and it had little to do with chasing AJ, and more to do with there being a train in front of her she could try to jump. Fluttershy probably would have stopped and was just sort of dragged along for the ride.

As for Rara and Ponk, if they turned back, they would have lost AJ. Rainbow might not even have registered they fell off.

No proof. Just theories.
