There's nothing wrong with 3-D animation. Some of it is brilliant and memorable. Zootopia. Ratatouille. But it's basically the same thing as stop-motion animation, using virtual puppets. It requires you to specify stuff that 2-D allows you to ignore, and prevents you from doing things that 2-D allows.
For example: what is the texture of Bugs Bunny's fur? It doesn't matter in a 2-D cartoon. Bugs can have fur or just a gray surface, depending on what the story line requires. But in 3-D CGI, as in puppet animation, you have to specify surface properties and stick to them. Check out the attached graphic. This is not an improvement on the original.
