Season 9 Episode 6 Discussion Thread Marimo!!SpikeCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830298

This thread is meant for discussing impressions on the episode Common Ground during and after it airs.

Be mindful of saying spoilers before they show up on TV.

This is maybe one of the worst episodes in a long time. It’s like 95% a shitty Dash episode, with 5% actually good scenes with the family. Wind and Clear were the only good thing. They could have cut out the first 6 minutes and lost nothing.

Interesting situation, silly working-out. RD must have had enough experience as a coach to realize from the get-go that QP wasn't going to get sportified in a few hours.

Conversely, the nerdiest of IRL nerds knows what a ball is.

And I thought the bits-for-hoofprints business was distasteful and kind of scummy. I was expecting Snips to get some sort of a comeuppance, but it didn't happen.

4/10.

the Snips autograph thing was a complete waste of time. It contributed nothing. They could have shown like 3 minutes of Huggies commercials instead.

They probably would have, if the Kimberley-Clark company had cared to buy the time.

Have you noticed that about half the ads during the commercial breaks are for other Discovery Family shows?

who'd waste air time for a show that can't even pull 6 figures anymore? Sure this particular one probably will because of Patton, but otherwise we're at about 1/9th of our all time peak audience. This is a dead show that couldn't even be half funded if everyone watching paid a dollar.

Nice graphic on the OP! Watching the kinematics of game play may have been the least worst thing about this episode.

So, dead or divorced?

"I figured you weren't the sportiest pony in Equestria."
"But Wind Sprint is! And her dad was a big athlete too!"

Suggests "dead."

I got a slight pleasure out of watching the characters repeatedly whipping those museum brochures in and out of hammerspace.

This episode isn't bad in any way but I still had a hard time getting through it. I don't like awkward cringe humor. It made up for that by being sweet though.

EquestriaGuy!1DerpyVA.6Country code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830313

How I'd change the episode:

1) Cut out the current cold open.
2) cut out the bit where Snails is selling autographs. If anything, leave it as a background activity during a Dash, PP, and FS dialogue scene.

Cold Open: The above mentioned dialogue scene from 2:26-2:24 of the Dailymotion version. Instead of the mane 3 watching the 3 meaningless, inconsequential Buckball ponies, Dash sees someone camped out in front of the HoF and rushes over to get in line. Cold open ends with the big reveal of Quibble Pants.

Act 1: Retain the dialogue from 3:45-7:02. Instead of going on this whole cockamamie, cringy, annoying failfest of Quibble trying to be someone he isn't, we skip to the dialogue at 18:33-18:52

Act 2: Dash and Quibble fail in various ways to connect with WS, each making things worse

Act 3: Dash turns to her friends and she works with Quibble to help him understand Wind Sprint, and Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie (whom WS admires as sports idols) works with her to understand Quibble. Now we get the dialogue from 18:55 through the end of the episode.

That would be easily a 9/10 episode, IMO.

I'm actually curious what answers people will have. What would you say Dash, the main character here, contributed to the episode?

Brainless, insensitive attempts to change an avocado into a pineapple using approaches that are obviously doomed from the start.

I thought the episode was alright. I can understand why others here wouldn't be as into it, but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as others here seem to say it was.

You all are very dramatic.

I don't think this was a terrible episode at all. In fact, I laud the writers for covering such a heavy, yet prevalent, topic.

I do agree that some changes were necessary though. First, get rid of Snips and Snails entirely. I've just never been a fan of these characters at all; I feel like they're a relic of an older time in MLP when having interesting background characters was a bigger deal. However, now we have a wealth of more mainstream recurring characters, so I see no need to include them. Second, Rainbow Dash should have realized like 5 minutes in that trying to make Quibble sporty was a bad idea. She's smarter than this episode makes her seem. And the game scene should not have taken place. Way too over the top, and it shouldn't have taken them that long to realize that their plan was wrong. Finally, and this kinda goes hand in hand with my last point, extend the third act by a few more minutes. I wanted to believe in the new formed bond between Wind Sprint and Quibble, but it was just a tad bit rushed. We needed like a scene where it's just them two talking things over. Where they see eye to eye on things. We didn't get that.

One final small complaint, but Wind Sprint's voice just seemed odd. It's very clear that someone's daughter voiced the character instead of a professional voice actor.

Beyond that, I still think it was a decent episode. I didn't have many negative thoughts while watching, and have to say that these comments took me by surprise.

Your criticisms are pretty much the same as everyone else's, but your judgment is kinder. You are right. This wasn't a terrible episode. It was a mediocre episode. Friendship is magic.

I still say 4/10. Okay, maybe 5/10.

I just think people are focusing too much on the negative. I have to wonder why? It's interesting the disconnect between here and IMDB ratings, which are very positive for this episode. I don't often look at IMDB, so maybe they're just always positive about episodes, but I really did not anticipate such negativity. My brony friends on other social media (like Telegram) all thoroughly enjoyed the episode!

Funny, I actually liked Wind Sprint's voice for being a fairly decent child performer rather than an adult or a bad performance. And I appreciate that they gave Snails something to do (in the last buckball episode) rather than just leaving him as a joke forever. Now if only Snips could have a reason to exist, or just never show up again...

There's a lot about this episode I just find confusing and weird, even if they aren't things I'd consider problems.

Like what was with that newsreel theater in the beginning? Do ponies have movie theaters, or is that just how they sensationalize their news? And why would the mane group bother watching it?

And what about that extensive, hyper-detailed almanac of Buckball stats? Who could possibly be recording this info, and for how long has the sport even been popular enough to do so?

Are Fluttershy and Pinkie professional athletes now? Do they have to show up for tourneys and stuff, in addition to their everyday lives and their jobs as teachers? Do they get paid somehow?

And it was never really clear what Wind Sprint wanted. Quibble assumed that she wanted him to be sporty like her dad, but it seemed like he was wrong from the start, while other times it seemed he might be right. Again not a problem really, especially with an emotional kid, but I never did get a bead on her.

Lastly, how hard is it for Quibble to just learn the rules of a sport? Did he ever try to get a hang of the basics? It didn't seem like Dash ever bothered even telling him how the game is played.

They've had movie theaters since One Bad Seed (and projectors since Hurricane Fluttershy). Though considering it was in a building right next to the arena and museum, it felt more like one of those movies that are part of some historic attraction meant to educate guests.

And watching it is probably just part of the experience, and something Pinkie and Fluttershy could do with Rainbow before the games.

Not as good watching it a second and third time. Drags on too much with Dash trying to teach Quibble.

Props for finally giving Snips and Snails an appearance again though.

Unlikeable ponyCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830390

Huh. I'm in the minority here, but I genuinely liked this episode. Dash was cute and well meaning, even if her ideas are poorly dumb, and I found it nice to see a topic about this being done in the show, and it felt naturally done without feeling forced.

Snips and snails were kind of annoying, but the general interaction between quibble, his girlfriend and her daughter felt genuine.

7.5/10.
