Season 9 Episode 4 Discussion Thread Marimo!!SpikeCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830202

This thread is meant for discussing impressions on the episode Twilight's Seven during and after it airs.

Be mindful of saying spoilers before they show up on TV.

AnonymousCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830203

Never heard of "Oceans 11".

I thought it was a reference to Blake's 7.

It’s unreal how good DHX has gotten at animating this show. There’s so much added to every scene, and every line.

Brilliant. Never saw the Luna thing coming.

Nice. I especially liked the echoed sibling rivalry in the Fluttershy/Zephyr and Celestia/Luna dyads, culminating in the Two Sisters' high-tension exit. (It was nice to see those two end an episode in an ongoing state of confrontation for once.) The convoluted plot creaked a bit, but fun was had by all. I notice Zephyr Breeze is starting to channel Disney's Cuzco. I'm okay with that.

It was also refreshing to see Spike shown for once not as a klutz with his foot in a bucket, but as an incomparably sly Macchiavelli.

And there's even a political moral here: a single traitor within the walls is worth a besieging army on the outside.

My favorite line: GlimGlam's sotto voce "And so much else."

The whole concept of Spike as Shiney's little brother is so natural, and at the same time so strange and unexpected, that it really lifted this ep out of the ordinary.

Sweet and funny episode. Love that shot of Luna looking menacing while stroking a goose.

My biggest gripe wasn't even with the episode, for Hasbro releasing that interview video before the episode aired that showed literally the ending to the episode. Like right up to the credits.

Beyond this, seeing Spike at home with Twilight with her parents and brother is now show canon. Up to today, we've never seen any signs of family life after Twilight hatched Spike from his egg. It was pretty much my head canon that Celestia had isolated Twilight after witnessing her power the day of Spike's hatching.

Who knew?

There were some rough spots in the story but still a fun romp overall for the 200th episode.

This episode is frickin weird. I don't get it.
Logically, conceptually, aesthetically, morally... I have positively no idea what this episode was going for.

This episode was great. I mean, it showed that this episode's story wasn't written by actual writers but it was nice to see the VAs craft something that was just so fun!

the lighthearted competitive dynamic between Twilight and Shining Armor, the scenes that gave each pony a moment to shine, the relationship between Zephyr and Dash, especially since Zephyr's VA is so ridiculously good at capturing his personality in ways you wouldn't find just reading a script, and of course the big plot twist in the end.

I almost want to say, "they put real effort into this one", but they always but an insane amount of top quality effort into this show, but in this episode, there was just something about it that took it to that next level, where the show is super fun and funny, everyone has chemistry, the story is outside the box for a toddler girl genre cartoon, and it ends with a satisfying conclusion. That's something we saw all the time early on in the first few seasons, but it's rare as fuck now.

In a way this. But it's not the first episode to give me that "what even for" vibe. What really struck a chord with me and apparently many others, was the great execution though.

It was a really enjoyable silly adventure episode with actually good callbacks, funny ideas and character interactions. Chapeau.

OpinionatedCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830225

My one biggest issue with this episode is all the explaining. The episode spends an entire ten minutes with characters doing nothing but explaining things, before they actually start doing things. And the explanations generally aren't even necessary. Things like the history of the competition are fine, but why does Shining have to explain every detail of the security like the trapdoor or the sealed tunnels? Why do Rarity and the others need to explain every step of her plan when they immediately just go do that? It isn't just padding, it's the entire first half of the episode spent waiting for anything to happen...

When the twig/SA rivalry was mentioned i was like wait a minute, then they re-explained the chummy sibling stuff from the gold-star perspective and that was pretty well done.

Finally get some explanation for Spike's role in early times and he finally got some kind of recognition.

I enjoyed the Rarity guard-voice, that was fun.

Nice twist ending.

Putting aside the complete lack of response to a diabolical double-betrayal conapiracy, this was fun.

Pinky Ponk got some astronaut footage and filled her helmet with spit, eeew ha yaaay Ponka!

You could have similar complaints about the campfire stories.

I did. Those at least turned out to be backstories. These were useless but i enjoyed em just fine.

Probly rl sucked so bad today that i needed to like the episode and thats why i wasnt annoyed by it.

What really put me off were the geese though.
I saw them and thought oh interesting bird monsters, they'll have them guard and ring alarm like geese.
But then they were actually geese. What gives, all the other non fairy-tale birds looked like in real life so far.

While it possibly could have been more eventful, I believe all the explaining done was to help make it feel more like a heist story. Shining explaining in detail all the security is similar to how in movies or video games with heists they'll go into detail all the obstacles that the thieves need to watch out for. Plus that's the moment where Spike found time to strike a deal and come up with a plan with Luna (he even makes a comment on how Shining went on and on).

And Rarity and the others explaining their steps of the plan is part of that trope where a character explains a plan before executing it, which usually results in something wrong going with the plan. It could be said to be done to make it more dramatic, since the audience would first need to know exactly what the plan is and what needs to happen to have done it right to better get an idea of how things went bad. It's kind of like how in Ticket Master we had all those imagine spots of what the others would do at the Grand Galloping Gala, to help later contrast how bad things actually turned out in Best Night Ever (plus Andrea Libman's ideas of Pinkie going into space and Fluttershy being a badass spy could only be incoporated in the imagine spots since it didn't work out in reality). The only exception to the explaining part is Applejack's detailed backstory for Applechord, that I think was more to just set up the joke about how it was so detailed it makes you wonder if it actually happened to her.

I definitely think a lot of the explaining could have been completely left out, but my point is that even the explaining that did happen was paced awfully. In Ticket Master as you bring up, there were those extremely short imagine spots where they explain their intentions, but those were interstitched between the characters actually going and doing things.

Instead of half an episode of just explaining all up front, wouldn't it make more sense then for the ponies to explain their parts of the plan as they come up, to give at least SOME things happening in the first half of the episode?

I loved this episode!

Not only has it been a long time since I've had this much fun with an episode, it was nice to finally see a conclusion to Spikes place in Twilights family. Although I have always seen him as Twilights brother I know that up until now that was still a highly contested issue, so it's nice to see it wrapped up. Overall we saw some good character development for the one episode.

Above all this episode felt classic, like an older episode. No young 6, no friendship school, no Starlight Glimmer, (although I like her) nothing beyond season 3, just a fun little episode with the Main 6, Spike, Shining Armour, and the Princesses. It was really nice to see that they still respect the fandom enough to give us something as wholesome as this.

My only real problem with it was that I think they placed to much emphasis on the rivalry between the Princesses. They should be long over this by now, it's been 9 years.

Have nine years passed in Equestria though? Spike is barely older, so it seems like not much time has passed since the first episode. Maybe a couple years.

It's been at least 4 years as there have been 4 Hearth Warming's since the start of the show (Or maybe three if Heath Warming's Club and Best Gift ever are for the same Hearth Warming's)

We've had two Nightmare Nights, and two Grand Galloping Galas

So, at least three years.

EDIT: Nevermind. Ocellus is with her family in Best Gift Ever. Four years.

Just seemed like you were praising Spike for being more independent back in older seasons when that just seems to me more of an unintentional thing based on how it was used as a handwave. When he was actually the focus of an episode, like Owl's Well That Ends Well, he didn't seem more independent then than he does now.

OpinionatedCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36830254

>>36830253
Are you sure about that? I think if you look at how much time he spends on his own, even in episodes like that, it far surpasses his chances to be by himself in later seasons. Of course it isn't just him not being around others either that shows his independence. Wasn't it great in Best Night Ever, when he's going on about how he wants to show them all Canterot's best secrets? That's him having a real presence outside of just being twilight's lackey. Even spending the evening sulking at his usual donut shop shows how kinda separate from twilight he was.

He still seems to do things independent of Twilight's group. He hangs out with Big Mac to talk about stuff like hoofball, he DMs an Ogres & Oubliettes campaign with Big Mac and Discord, he has friendships with the leaders of both the changelings and dragons, he seems to hang out with Smolder a bit considering they have fire-breathing contests "all the time". Even in this episode where he is working with Twilight for most of the time, he winds up showing he had his own plan and side separate from Twilight's group.

I feel it's really more the surprise that Spike had his own plan that involved having his other two siblings play against each other while he'd win in the end.

I think it's just the general idea that Shining's plan didn't account for if someone on their side would betray them.

Though at the same time, this is Luna, the one person involved in this thing who does have a history of turning against her sister and kingdom for her own interests.

I do feel like they could have done more with that. Like mention how all he had to do to win was ask, or point out how while Shining was gloating about having won, Twilight could have easily been the one to levitate the crown over to herself and win.

I'll be honest, when I saw Spike pull it out, I thought he'd replaced the one on the throne with a duplicate. That's a super common heist trope, and that crown would be so easy to counterfeit.

Really, REALLY freaking good episode. Kind of lacks a moral, but I think that shows that an episode without a heavy moral focus can still be good. (That being said, the touch on spike as the official little brother of the family was more than enough).

Love all the jokes like shining knowing EXACTLY what kind of plan that twilight was going to do, because that's the SAME plan they use for literally EVERY single situation they run into. Zephyr as a guard, Pinkie wanting to go to space, Luna bitching about the Geese squawking for false alarms all the time... literally everything was great about this episode.
Plus the luna petting a goose bit was just one of my favorite exploitable images from this entire series.

9.5/10, EASILY the best episode of this season by far.
