Season 8 Finale Discussion Thread Marimo!!SpikeCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36829336

This thread is meant for discussing impressions on the season finale, School Raze Parts 1 & 2, during and after they airs.

Be mindful of saying spoilers before they show up on TV.

All in all, I liked this ep a lot. It had possibly the best and most cleverly articulated plot (in the original sense) that I've seen on this show. By cross-cutting between multiple interlocking narratives, each holding unexpected setbacks and surprises, it kept me eager to hear more right from the start. The dialogue was convincing, non-sugary, and adroit, and the ending was satisfyingly acid. I especially liked Neighsay's ambiguous position as a villain unwittingly blocking a worse one. Three minuses:

1. The big minus was that the script never made me really believe that an inexperienced little foal like Cozy Glow could be dedicated, complicated, motivated, and Machiavellian enough to manage such a complicated plot to rule the world, even with Tirek's advice. I kept expecting her to turn into Chrysalis at the end, and was sorry when she didn't.

2. The Tree of Harmony as an Arbor ex Machina. Boooo!

3. The revelation that Pinkie knows that she's irritating, and does it deliberately, makes her a different and substantially less positive character for me.

EquestriaGuy!1DerpyVA.6Country code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36829339

And what’s with ponies keeping creatures in a magical Hanoi Hilton? Somebody better call the ESPCA.

I do find it interesting that these creatures are just normal creatures somehow magicked into becoming these monsters. Can’t they just drain the magic from them, turning them back to normal, and set them free?

Yeah, that made no sense. What would a normal manticore or chimera look like, anyway?

Props for the "K" in "magicked," EG.

I'm assuming, if they even are elements, that they're all new ones, like how the Pillars were completely different ones. The colours didn't match up, and a good few of them displayed multiple elements throughout the series.

Either way, good finale, but not the best. I give it a solid 7.5/10.

This wasn't the first time Pinkie demonstrated self awareness of her less positive traits. Remember when she annoyed Applejack for five minutes to get her to do something for her back around season 2?

Pinkie Pie and Applejack: Cherrychanga Or Chimicherry? (The Last Roundup) | MLP: FiM [HD]

As for this season ending, I'm pretty pleased with it with a few exceptions in the final episode. We don't see how Glim Glam is blindsided by Cozy Glow as well as how quickly Cozy Glow blindsides the Cutey Mark Crusaders. Just a few tiny issues that became annoying given how well the rest of the plot played out. The final scene was awesome!

In "The Last Roundup," Pinkie is being used as a sort of auditory stink bomb by Rainbow Dash to get AJ to spill the beans. It isn't clear that Pinkie is being insufferable on purpose.

OpinionatedCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36829349

Honestly not a fan of this one, the events at the school were certainly interesting but I thought everything with the mane six was just completely pointless and boring. They didn't gain anything, or learn anything, or even accomplish anything.

On the other hand, I really want to love Cozy Glow as a villain. Her unexpected rivalry with Neighsay, her startling intelligence dealing with setbacks, her megalomaniacal asirations of friendship, and quickly taking the Mary Sue out of the equation, everything she does is far better written than I expected. But on the other hand, nothing she does makes any goddamn sense! She wants to rule over the school, so her plan is to remove all magic from the country?? She's using what is effectively the apocalypse as a diversion just so she can get Twilight out of town! Her whole plan is so preposterous, it unfortunately lessens my opinion of her as a character.

Story-wise, there are two major disappointments I was struck by near the end. First, there was an interesting scene where Cozy is rallying the students against the six, but the student body is impressed with their friendship, becoming hesitant to listen to Cozy. I thought this was actually a great development, showing that the school's teachings have actually had some impact on the common ponies, making ordinary students more understanding and cognizant of friendship and having an effect on Equestria as a whole. It was a great way of showing that Twilight's school really matters for people who aren't six specific students. Buuuut... immediately after, Cozy just talks them down and nothing comes out of it. Talk about lame.

Second, the student six are warned that undoing the magic draining spell might cause a huge explosion destroying the school. They ultimately decide that Twilight would want her school blown up if it meant saving all the magic in Equestria, so they do it and the magic goes haywire, causing a gigantic... lightshow? The "explosion" is totally harmless and again, nothing at all comes of that! It would have been a fantastic end to the season arc if the school didn't survive, but the lessons live on in the students who learned true friendship enough to realize what's more important than a building. The school had its season, then gets blown up to start a new arc. But no, the whole idea of the school being destroyed was brought up for no reason, only to be farted away by the status quo.

Aside from these, the episodes are riddled with really strangely dumb ideas like what people have already brought up here. Was anyone else just stunned in befuddlement when Dash uses a cloud to block rain??

Nother NonymousCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36829350

>>36829349
>Dash uses a cloud to block rain

Well, Equestrian clouds are peculiar semi-solids. You can cut them up in chunks, wrestle with them, and stand on them. Iif you can stand on one, you should be able to stand under it and keep dry, as long as that particular cloud isn't the one that's raining.

They probably put some sort of polymer into them at the factory in Cloudsdale.

>>36829340
>what’s with ponies keeping creatures in a magical Hanoi Hilton

And what's with locking up an eight-year-old girl in a cage for all eternity, surrounded by monsters? I realize that the traditional Christian and Muslim God does that sort of thing all the time, but you would think that Princesses of Equestria would be less cruel than that, no matter how evil the little bitch is.

That's why it would have been better if Cosy had been Chrysalis in disguise.

I don't really like the comparison with Darla. I know that's what they were going for, but Cozy was neither wealthy nor powerful. She doesn't start out as a universally beloved golden child, and indeed only her hard work and perseverence at concealing her... thing causes ponies to like her at all. And she doesn't... hate anyone. She seriously holds no ill will towards anyone, and is just screwing them over because she thinks it'll work out well for her.

If they had decided to un-reform Diamond Tiara in a wonderfully horrible way, that would be a perfect match to Darla, but Cozy... is she like, homeless or something? Where are her parents? Why was she trying to learn about friendship in the first place? How did she get a chess piece as a cutie mark? How does she know a diversion when she sees it? Why is she cuddling a skull?

You know that thing where Starlight's tragic backstory is that her friend got a cutie mark and left? I'm genuinely scared to learn what Cozy's backstory is.

Amazing 2parter. Fun all around plus some worldbuilding again.
Yet much more lore to match the Young 6 with the Mane 6 and the Pillars would have been adequate. They could have made an actual focus on the school instead of keeping it as side plot so much.

This exactly. On the one hand it's cool we got a villain without any remarkable powers playing everyone like chess pieces (hence the cutiemark?), but damn I'd like to know how she came to be, and what exactly she'd do being the most friendshipful/powerful being. Power for power's sake itself is just so ugh.

I honestly love how over the top insane Cozy was. Not even she knew what she'd do as "Empress of Friendship." Her friendship badge was just sort of taped to her makeshift crown. I don't think I've ever seen a more villanous cry for help. I expected a villain like "Ah ha ha I'm manipulating everyone to fulfill my evil plan," but I didn't expect full on Lesson Zero "I'll get them out of the way by blowing up the entire world! It's the perfect plan!" level insanity.

I also wanna see how she got a chess piece as a cutie mark. If her special talent is manipulating others, she had to have pulled off some incredible deception to get that thing to appear.

It was interesting to see the colors of the auras around each of the "young 6." So Yona is loyaltyHonesty, Silverstream is Laughter, Ember is honestyLoyalty, Ocellus is Generosity, Sandbar is Kindness, and Gallus is Magic.

The skull was when Hamlet asked some gravedigger how long it took a body to rot, and the guy was like "Well here's a 23 year old skull?"

Hamlet takes the skull and starts going on about how well he knew "poor Yorick" and what a great guy he was, while the gravedigger tries not to bust out laughing, since Hamlet's basically just making a joke about knowing someone he never met in his life.

I really don't see the connection with Cozy Glow. But then again I think Hamlet's like the worst thing Shakespeare ever wrote and I've never made it through the whole thing, so maybe I just missed the part where Hamlet cuddles the skull and puts it on his desk.

Honestly they probably put the skull in to make Cozy all "ha ha look how evil I am!" but for me the fridge horror of it kind of backfired.

Used to be that if a reference seemed so poorly executed you could count on it just being a false positive from the viewer. Nowadays just because it doesn't actually fit Hamlet in the slightest doesn't mean that isn't what they were going for.

Also I totally agree about Hamlet itself being rather poorly made, the whole thing starts with a goddamn ghost spoiling a murder plot and no one finds this all that interesting.

Darla had real power politically, plus having that gorilla servant, but Cozy glow just seemed.. well, she didn't seem on the same level.

>>36829336
Bleh, upset that I missed getting in on the discussion when it happened.

Bah. Either way, its an "okay" finale, but not one I'm a huge fan of. Cozy is a nice change of pace, but she feels more like a Minion than a true villain--- all her power relied on others screwing up: Twilight just left apocalyptic level artifacts unguarded and the students were flat out retarded in what they were believing.

Plus, not a big fan of the student 6 as I find them pretty boring.
6/10 from me.

>>36829350
>That's why it would have been better if Cosy had been Chrysalis in disguise.

Her saying "you ponies just don't get it" in regards to friendship makes me wonder if she might not be a magical being in the form of a pony and not a true pony.

Expecting more backstory about her with Grogar's legion of doom in S9.

>>36829413

I thought Cozy felt pretty mastermind-y. Especially since she's been manipulating them throughout the whole season. I doubt Twilight knew the artifacts could be used in the way Cozy did, and maybe they were guarded, and under lock and key, but Cozy Glow was trusted enough to get access to the key. It's not said how she got the artifacts, but I can think of ways that even a powerless little filly like herself could have. She may have even had a hand in getting Twilight to collect the artifacts at the school in the first place!

You could say Cozy was Tirek's minion, but all we have is his word on that firstly, and secondly she kind of screwed him over too, leaving him trapped in Tartarus for all eternity with Pinkie Pie.

> the students were flat out retarded in what they were believing

Cozy could've been more convincing in her arguments to the mass of "friendship students," but I mean the writers aren't some kind of tactical geniuses, so I think they did a good job portraying one. Ember did suspect her pretty early on. And even I was totally shocked when Cozy was that completely batshit insane.

> Her saying "you ponies just don't get it" in regards to friendship makes me wonder if she might not be a magical being in the form of a pony and not a true pony.

Yeah, plus her appearing out of nowhere, with no parents, or apparent home outside of the school. What I don't get is why she was there in the first place, because once she learned that "friendship is power" she had her reason to take over the school and cripple Equestria and such, but before she learned that... what was she doing there, when she first arrived?

unlikeable ponyCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36829420

>>36829417
>what was she doing there, when she first arrived?
It would be good to get some clarification on it in S9, she's kind of blank there. You'd think twilight would need parent approval of some kind for her to be at the school after all.

>>36829417
>thought Cozy felt pretty mastermind-y.
Well, the issue is that she's a one shot gun: Once she makes her move she kind of loses her threat because she relied 100% on the element of deception and she's tipped her hand now.
She's going to have trouble posing a threat again because she can literally be stopped by any adult pony and everyone knows she's evil now.

>>36829420

Hah, you just wait until she reforms! They'll totally fall for it.

But no seriously, that's another reason it's puzzling that Cozy Glow is confined to Tartarus. That place is for dangerous creatures who pose a continued threat, so was Cozy somehow capable of doing that magic sucking thing even after the artifacts were removed? Why was she still a threat? Seems like supervised house arrest with parole would be good enough, long as you can keep tabs on her. Just an enchanted something that keeps her from leaving school grounds so she actually has a chance to learn, and then you find out what is wrong with her.

I actually think they're going to be like visiting Tartarus a lot in season 9, just because it's insane to just lock her away there and forget about her. (Even if that's what Cozy wants them to do.) I just can't imagine any of those ponies or other creatures accepting that as a solution.

the security in Tartarus is a joke anyway, Tirek got out in the first place cuz Cerberus wandered off.

Since it turns out it's just a jail, with draconian SHU conditions without exercise yard or even a toilet actually, it seems Equestria's leaders have some payback coming for putting all their unreformed enemies in the same place with such weak security.

Also with the history of possession, character such as So,bra getting whacked outright but when he's only smoke anyway has always left a wide open door for him to crop up sometime, and with the tree of harmony and tartarus explained and all, it seems he's the one major loose end left to tie up before moving on the G5.

Given that the only evildoer known to have escaped was Tirek I'd say it's pretty damn secure.
