And continuing the S7 trend, not bad but really not good either. Very, very mediocre, meh song, somewhat of an idiot plot, and an instant resolution that doesn't really answer any of the major questions brought up.

Good episode. There was no heavy-handed moral, and the genuine problem raised was left not entirely resolved -- good! The haiku dialogue was clever, and Sweetie Belle being calm was worth a smile. The song had B-grade lyrics with actual rhymes, and it featured a few snatches of quadrupedal dancing, which is something you practically never see in animation.

Was "circle painting" a reference to Arrival, or Giotto's "O," or what? Giotto's "O" seems pretty recherche, even for a series with Ahuizotl and the Arimaspi in it...

Anyone notice how the animators made the CMC a little older and larger than their classmates?

At some point, the writers are just flat out going to run out of the trio to do. This story took the issues and glossed the idea of free will vs. destiny with a very unsatisfying end. Is Rumble going to become the next Food Network star?

I saw it was a CMC episode and skipped it because I've lost any interest I had in their stories. I'm a little disappointed they wasted a song on an episode I'm not gonna watch, especially considering this season has had hardly any songs.

Song Count:
season 4: 17 songs
season 5: 13 songs
season 6: 11 songs
season 7: 5 songs so far
WTF? Hopefully there's still at least a musical episode coming.

I like what this episode seems to hint about the CMC's character development so far, but I feel Rumble's first major appearance kind of went to waste. It's kind of ironic, seeing that he's the only pony we've seen that physically matured. Maybe his new voice wasn't supposed to mean any form of maturity.

I'm not finding any critical flaws in the plot structure. Rumble's disdain for cutie marks goes for a little too long to remain unexplained. Or maybe I didn't care enough about Rumble to follow along until the song came on. Then he became more relatable. Then he lost his relatability.

Thunderlane being a Wonderbolt comes out of the left field too because he joined too easily. This is a problem because it risks deflating the story arc weight of a main protagonist in the show.

But at least the song was pretty good.

>>36826672
7/10 is my rating. I'm sure it will become more watchable later on if we understand Rumble's character better.

Damn, actually very pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a shit 3/10 tier episode, but I was honestly very, very entertained. There was alot of cute little facial expressions and quirks (Scootaloo's closing of the spyglass those 2 times, or Sweetie belle's melt downs), and I liked the message.

Honestly, really good episode, and one of the ones I enjoyed the most out of this season. 9/10. Really loved it.

I really hope things spring back after the movie, because, to give another example of songs, the Equestria girls songs have been SERIOUSLY terrible lately. While I enjoyed the monday blues and good vibes one, Coinky dink world and mad twience were ear cancer.

I actually would have enjoyed it best if it turned out that Thunderlane's cutie mark had been revealed to be COOKING, but he told rumble that he was doing a job that had the "cooking" thing as more of a side aspect (I.E., that he was a wonderbolt and loved it, but that his cooking relation to it was how they shared that responsibility at boot camp)

Would have tied in better into the "Cutie marks don't control your life and you can still do your dream even if your cutie mark seems to be unrelated" thing.

>Thunderlane being a Wonderbolt comes out of the left field too because he joined too easily. This is a problem because it risks deflating the story arc weight of a main protagonist in the show.
But we don't know about how hard it was for him. Besides why couldn't he also be someone who is good enough to make the Wonderbolts? He was a trainee with Rainbow Dash too at the Academy. All he would need to do is pass the exam, spend some time on the reserves (he was shown in the reserves uniform in Twilight's Kingdom), and he'd eventually make it in (this isn't even the first time we've seen him as a Wonderbolt, it was already seen in Parental Glideance). And it's not like Rainbow Dash only just barely became a Wonderbolt, she was constantly impressing them and being the top trainee. Someone who wasn't as good as her would still have a chance of making it.

>>36826677
>I actually would have enjoyed it best if it turned out that Thunderlane's cutie mark had been revealed to be COOKING
Pretty sure they were already locked into what his cutie mark was. Or at least, it'd be a real stretch to explain how that storm cloud and lightning bolt, pretty similar design to Rainbow Dash's besides color, represents cooking.

Well maybe I'm blind then. Still, even Rainbow just barely made it into the Wonderbolts by a hair. I thought for sure that it was mentioned that Rainbow Dash's exam was a once in a lifetime opportunity for her to have a chance to get into the reserves, and even then she made it into the bolts for being one of their "most promising reserve members".

Very few ponies in the world make it into the bolts. Rainbow got in very quickly and went through many challenges to get in, and even for her, it took six seasons.

>>36826679
>even Rainbow just barely made it into the Wonderbolts by a hair
How was it by a hair? She was one of the best fliers in the academy next to Lightning Dust, and Lightning Dust ultimately got kicked out because of her recklessness that was putting her in the top spot. Spitfire complimented Dash a couple times in Rainbow Falls about her performance in Wonderbolts Academy. The test wasn't once in a life time, it and the reserves was just something newly implemented, and was only hard for her because studying was a weak spot for Rainbow Dash specifically, but even then when she found the right studying method she wound up acing the test. And Spitfire said that she had the best chance of beating Wind Rider's long unbroken record.

>and even then she made it into the bolts for being one of their "most promising reserve members".

So if she's "one of" their most promising reserve members instead of just the most promising, doesn't that imply multiple promising reserve members? So Thunderlane could've also been pretty good?

AnonymousCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36826681

>>36826680
Well, she almost failed that exam, for starters.

>>36826681
Again, Rainbow Dash's major issues involved being handicapped by her own character, not being good at normal ways of studying, which isn't indicative that the actual test would be challenging to most other ponies. The test seemed like just a standard test and everyone else seemed to get the material easy enough considering how easily they could recite the facts while trying to tutor her, so for anyone else this part of the process could've been easy.

And if that's for starters, what are the remaining instances where the process of getting into the Wonderbolts would've been an actual challenge for Rainbow Dash based on the merits of the actual process and not faults with her own character or another character such as Lightning Dust or Wind Rider?

That, and I think it's also a perspective issue. It's kind of silly to spend dozens of Rainbow Dash episodes about her making progress into the Wonderbolts -- the biggest of Dash's story arcs, without really being an acquaintance of hers throughout those six seasons. Maybe that's why I forgot Thunderlane appeared in any of those other episodes.

I don't think its impractical for Thunderlane to have become a wonderbolt, but it might feel like it "cheapened" dash's arc when there's all this buildup to how hard she had to work to become one and then they offhandedly mention a background pony having become one.

Not that I find it too off given how poorly the wonderbolts really seem now compared to her S1 dreaming of them, but I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

I don't believe in the show. Her mark in Top Bolt for instance looks to be the same from Wonderbolts Academy. I think I remember the confusion coming from merchandise that was released beforehand like the trading cards giving her a different looking cutie mark.

These things weren't always accurate.

If someone points a gun at you and says your money or your life, you're not consentually giving them your money because you choose to value it less than getting shot. They're robbing you.

Similarly, if cutie marks force you to be good at one thing, you would be stupid not to do that thing, and it'd be easy to forget about everything else. Choosing not to exercise your special talent is not a choice at all, ergo they're forcing you to exercise it.

But personally I'd rather be forced to be really good at what I do, than be forced to do what I'm not really good at. So, it's not ideal, but cutie marks are better than the most people's lives in reality.

Except cutie marks don't force you to be good at one thing, you're supposed to get it because you actually do have that talent, and most ponies focus on their talent because they want to.

It's something I feel happens to a lot of people in real life. Once they eventually figure out what they're good at or what they enjoy doing the most, they tend to gradually focus more on that whether it's a hobby and/or a job.

I'd sure love to see all the counterexamples among "natural" cutie marks.

Every scene when any pony isn't doing the thing their cutie mark represents is an example of that.

That's a false dilemma. Rumble's statement was not that you couldn't do anything other than your special talent. It was that they just force you into one thing your whole life. Every pony you see doing stuff unrelated to their special talent is going to be usually if not almost always doing stuff related to their special talent. It'd be stupid not to. Just one special talent, for your whole life.

Meanwhile, evidence of cutie marks altering ponies' behaviors and personalities continues to grow...

But the only time we see a pony forced to do stuff related to their is cutie-marks or were getting the cutie-mark altered there personality were with artificial ones(ab's cutie-marks, cutie mark swap spell.

The cutie-mark just reflects something they're good at, but not something they're compelled to do, and not something that prevent them doing other things or changes their personalities(not that wee see a lot of pre/post cutie-mark to make a comparison). In the instances where that's not the case(Apploosa's most wanted, Cutie Pox, Magical Mystery Cure) it's a critical part of the plot and presented as a problem that has to be solved.

Haiku pony seemed to be put in there specifically to show that even if you have a cutie mark meant for one thing, it’s irrational to think you can’t still enjoy doing unrelated things like drawing circles.

He didn't say they force to do one thing. He said they force you into one thing. Like it wouldn't force Kettle Corn to compose haikus (even though it did) but she's not gonna get very far in any other line of work. Sure she'll paint circles as a hobby, but if you ask what field she's going into... it'll be haiku.

Well, except for the fact that the CMC screwed up royally, and convinced her that her cutie mark represented the wrong thing, when her real talent is poetic calligraphy.

He didn't say cutie marks would stop you from doing other things either. He said they just force you into one thing your whole life.

And that they're silly.

I think it's well established that "cutie marks" indicate an underlying talent, not a job description and that was what the CMCs helped people with. Somehow they continue to believe that scatter-shooting a bunch of basic activities has some relationship to symbols and have yet to figure out what they demonstrated they already knew for example in how they helped Troubleshoes and Diamond Tiara.

they've forgotten the key idea behind the marks and they need to quit stunting everypony else's view of them by applying the same thing that failed to earn their own for five seasons.

However it was fun that AB identified exactly the issue with Rumble one Thunderlane gave her more information.

Eh. More Pony please, thanks Hasbro.
