Supination Nother NonymousCountry code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 36822576

This is a trivial point, but it bothers me. IRL horses can't supinate their forearms -- that is, they can't rotate the sole of their hoof so it faces upward. (Most mammals, apart from apes and humans, can't either.) But Equestrian ponies can. They're shown all the time on the show in palm-up postures. But how do they do this? You practically never see an intermediate position. One frame the sole faces downward; in the next frame, it faces upward. I suspect that the animators just change the shape of the end of the foreleg for most ponies. But this won't work for the ones that are wearing shoes -- i.e., Luna and Celestia, with their gold and silver sandals. Does the sole of the sandal rotate toward the midline? I don't think I've ever seen it in that position. There seems to be an intermediate position in some shots, but I don't have the necessary software to look at individual frames.

Sometimes you will see a pony pressing one or both soles to her face in a half-supinated position (pic), so there must be rotation. But I can't recall ever seeing the bottom of one of the princesses' sandals. Do the shoes magically change shape as they go from pronated to supinated? Can someone do a frame-by-frame check and report back?

Postscript: you CAN see the bottom of a princess's shoes in some shots -- e.g. s6e25 at 3:22. But they're fully supinated already. The animators seem to be avoiding the in-betweens.

Never mind -- I captured a semi-intermediate position a bit further on in s6e25 (pic). It looks awkward, which is probably why the animators never let it last for more than one frame.

The animators often forget that they're animating horses.

They're magical horse, so I don't think normal horse anatomy applies to them.

To an extent, yes. But when the animators blatantly defy basic parts of anatomy, like having them stand upright and move their front legs as if they were arms, it's pretty jarring. These are horses, not humans.

Reee, etc.

I was going to make a compilation of all the ebin reaction image faces throughout S6, but it seems someone else already did.

I always imagined that ponies evolved to be more generalist, while horses evolved to be specialized for one thing: running. So it makes sense that ponies'd have greater range of motion in their limbs than real ungulates.

That's one you won't see on the show.

Many examples in Flawless song, especially at 1:30 where pinky repeatedly circles her wrist in motion.

https://youtu.be/JB1rFbLOhwE

Why fixate on just the one aspect? I find the hips far more consternating, able to include full bipedal range of motion and load bearing, and the shoulders are impossible too.

Basically, they're rubber. Try finding a drawing model, i had to put human arms n legs on a horse model to draw ponies.

Dont get me started on thumbs.
