Las Pegasus Unicon, or Unicon for short, was a brony convention held in Las Vegas in 2013

It was meant to be a 3 day convention. The organizers were inexperienced in hosting conventions, although experienced in running scams, but that's a different matter.

The organizers got Tara Strong, John De Lancie, and several other big names from the show to attend, including several musical artists who worked on the show.

They (allegedly) nearly killed Tara Strong by serving her eggplant, which she's allergic to.

On the 3rd day, the entire convention collapsed. The convention only pulled in around 1200 to 1500 attendees, and had promised one of these Unicon pamphlets for every attendee to advertisers.

from what I and a few other people who attended the convention were able to piece together, it is likely that the organizer, Sandi Haas (fake name, don't know what her real name is/was) didn't pull in enough money through the convention to cover all costs including paying for the talent who had showed up. In an attempt to keep the convention solvent, or maybe because she had some sort of gambling addiction, she entered a blackjack tournament on the second day of the convention in the casino that the convention was hosted at, and lost.

A lot of attendees who had shown up from out of state had booked hotel packages through the convention. These packages offered discounts to attendees on rooms booked at the hotel.

When the hotel realized that they wouldn't be getting the money they were owed for the convention and hotel rooms from the convention, they double and in some cases triple charged attendees for their rooms. This left a lot of attendees stranded in Las Vegas with no money until they were able to resolve the problem.

I lived in Las Vegas at the time and so suffered no such ill effects. It was sort of like being on the hindenburg with a parachute.

Thousands of pamphlets were promised to be printed, but only around 300 actually made it into the hands of convention-goers. That I ended up with one is a bit of good luck.

I believe around 3000-5000 attendees were promised to the Riviera Hotel Casino, which makes the actual turnout of 1200-1500 so catastrophic.

Also, the convention came up with a scheme of selling "Vendor bits."

The idea was that convention attendees could exchange their money to the convention for convention cash, and so avoid carrying around wads of money on the vendor floor.

What actually ended up happening was, when everything fell apart, all the vendors that had sold their work for "bits" were left holding a bunch of useless fucking paper, and in a lot of cases were out a lot of money.

Allegedly (no one can prove this happened, but people who attended are on the side of believing this is true, myself included) Tara Strong fired her agent for stealing money from the convention cash box.

So, the convention had a merch table, but because they were so ill prepared, they apparently tracked transactions for shirts and stuff with a crayon and a spiral notebook. *Allegedly,* on the third day of the convention, when everything was falling apart and staff were desperately trying to hold things together, tara strong's agent went to the convention cash box and grabbed a fistful of cash, probably under the assumption that they would otherwise not be getting paid.

It's also possible that this never happened, and that Tara Strong fired their agent for booking them on such a fucking terrible shitshow.

I dont have many images in my computer and I thougth(honestly even if it sounds stupid) that for each post you needed to put an image

No, an image isnt required to post, and lots of people post with no image, and many even post the same image each time, so there is no need to apologize.
Tbh, the constant apology is really offputting.

Had you been around when it burned itself out in the most massive fan fire you've ever seen, you would remember it.

I have a folder of caps and images of the clusterfuck, the time line of how it collapsed, taking no prisoners in its wake.

So many MLP show pros were screwed to the point that they had to hold an auction to pay for their losses left in their laps by the two con artists who staged the event.

Photos and screen caps upon request.

There was a ton of finger pointing about why the con was a total failure economically. Some fan news teams tried to stream panels in real time, killing off sales of day tickets.

Others on the con staff blamed the hotel and convention center for squeezing the con staff repeatedly starting on day one when they could see there were not going to be enough paying customers for rooms and day ticket sales.

Others blamed the two people who had no business running a start up con with their shady history in other events.

However, thanks to EqD, some of the best of the show was recorded and is still hosted on YT. There are a half dozen short panel outtakes hosted in this article and more about the show in the archives.

So basically it was the MLP fandom version of dashcon?
Dashcon of course being a name you would expect from the MLP fandom, yet it wasn't.

What year did this take place?

2013, May.

It set back start up cons for almost three years.

Haha i just noticed the dates are in the OP pic and it says feburary. You've proven to be an unreliable source :P

Ether way...
I was still pretty active in the community at that time, weird i dont remeber this at all.
I dont really give much thought to cons i have no hope of reaching though, so it might have just been background noise to me, but you would think id remeber some memes at least.

I went to the 2013 bronycon, that was the first year it was in philly iirc.

Check the date in the song lyric video vidcap. That was penned in early May and what I was working from. Being a few weeks off this far from the event isn't that big a deal now.

It was held the last weekend of February.

I'm turning up more fan review videos from people with stories to tell about their experiences, like this one.

As someone who knew the convention organizer from local brony meetups before the disaster convention, the aftermath was also fascinating because it fractured the local brony community. This sparked an investigation from local bronies into what went wrong, why, and what the fuck happened to Sandi and Eddy Haas.

So there was a group of locals, working with some people from outside the area, in trying to determine what happened, and then there was the faction of locals who was diametrically opposed to anyone investigating what happened, and basically accused the group of bronies trying to figure out what happened as just trying to slander the good name of Sandi and Eddi Haas. That was a really fucking wild time. There were accusations from that second group of [we want to] know-nothings, of people being "spies" for the group trying to investigate what the fuck happened.

Just wondering why no one has ever confirmed where those two organizers vanished to on Saturday. Had they been a bit more involved while the ship was sinking, maybe the finger pointing might not be stinging.

This, along with the convention funny money trading that left a lot of dealers screwed over still hasn't been explained.

A lot of reliable people went over the background of Sandi Haas and her husband. Their hands were dirty from other scams they ran in the city. When the people who organized the show bailed out and vanished, you can't seriously expect the people who were burned badly to think otherwise. Not even a simple apology. People were hurt and stranded. This is inexcusable.

Sandi Haas was behind the cashier's cage with the fence pulled down crying, last I saw her on day 3. I left when it became clear that there wouldn't be anything other than the Riviera badgering people and the smoldering remains of scheduled panels with lets of begging for money.

In the aftermath, investigations into Sandi and Eddy Haas discovered that those weren't their names (I don't remember what their real names actually turned out to be) and that they had a history of pulling scams on pagan communities where they'd organize "pagan cruises" and then skip town with the money that they'd been entrusted with to book the cruises with.

Oh, no, this failed harder than dashcon. Dashcon promised mediocre attractions, and failed to deliver even those.

Unicon promised a top class convention experience, booked big names, and then crashed and burned harder than most conventions would ever be capable of.

Dashcon was a bike jump that wiped out in a skate park.

Unicon was a rally car screwing up a jump and wrapping itself around a tree

I guess you were on the local facebook group and saw all the drama that ensued, then, too, huh?

I grew out of the fandom around that time, but I do kind of miss the First Friday meetups.

I don't think I was ever on the facebook groups for the first friday meetups in Vegas. I just sort of learned about them and then just hung out and turned up for them.
