I'm not a huge fan of guns or cars but Gunsmith Cats is fucking amazing.

I own the entire manga series in Omnibus form. Funny thing is that Gunsmith Cats is a spinoff of another Anime that pre-dates it that almost no one has heard of.

Believe it or not, this wasn't due to massive research, it's because the guy that created the series is a HUGE gun and car enthusiast and he wanted to make a series that was a love letter to his hobby, which is what this anime basically was.

So it wasn't like the guy went out of his way to research to make this anime, he already had all this knowledge prior to creating it.

This series is kind of like the American Psycho of anime. You think it's about two girls with guns having adventures but really it's the creator using the show as a medium to express his real passion.


However, Gunsmith Cats is a spinoff of another Anime called Riding Bean, which focuses on the character Bean Bandit. Bean is a side character that works alongside Rally Vincent in Gunsmith Cats on rare occasions. In Riding Bean it's the exact opposite, where Bean is the main character and Rally is just a side character that occasionally shows up to help him.

Riding Bean (1989 OVA) English Dub

In the original Rally was a blonde. Consider this kind of like a prequel to Gunsmith Cats, only it's not a prequel because it came first.

The team that made the gunsmith cats anime came to the US to do cultural research, and they basically took a snapshot of the 1990s culture and politics.
Albeit, a grainy Polaroid snapshot from a camera with a dusty lens.
Its not perfect, but they are some people from japan who spent a month going to gunshops around the US, so i cut them some slack.
Its enough to give nostalgia and be enjoyable.

Oh, well yeah. The animation team had to do a lot of work for references as far as trying to get the 'feel' of it being set in America instead of it being in Japan but as far as all the guns and cars and stuff, this was all stuff the creator already had a passion for.

Yes, and he got pretty much every detail correct.
Its just a good all around effort that anyone can appreciate. Like, even though you dont know exactly the details they are using, it still nakes it a better experience for you.
Just a well produced piece of media. Even the dubbing isnt bad.
Also it has to do with something im a nerd about, so that is also pretty sweet.

Like I said, I'm not even a gun or car enthusiast and Gunsmith Cats is one of my favorite series. It's a testament to how well put together and engaging the series is. I would go so far as to say it's one of the best anime series ever made.

Gunsmith Cats was a project of passion by the creators and it shows.

If you haven't read the manga I highly recommend it, some of the shit that both Rally and Bean do with cars in it are fucking amazing.

Basically they're in a car chase with Bean, and he knocks them into a playground where they are skidding sideways towards a girl playing with a ball so to save her from being squashed by the car they open the doors and more or less pass her through as the car skids over where she's standing.

I also looked this up and I was wrong. I forgot the person they are chasing is not Bean but a guy named Gray. He's the one who stole her car and that is why he had no problem crashing her into a playground full of kids. The thing I'm thinking of is when Rally and Bean are driving on the freeway in their own cars (Rally ends up with her infamous Shelby GT and Bean is driving a custom built get-away car I believe he calls Buff, which is an armored, suped up Ford RS-200.) and they are both being chased by police, and the police helecopter that is chasing them is having a hard time keeping up so the chief yells at the pilot to go faster and he's like, "BOTH OF THOSE CARS ARE GOING OVER 120, this is as fast as I can go!"

So yeah, they literally out-run a police helicopter.

Also Bean is a certified badass and if you need any more proof of that, look no further than this.

Someone fired an RPG at his car and he caught it one handed, flipped it around and sent it back. Bean is by far one of the most badass characters in Anime but hardly anyone knows who he is. His entire outfit is lined with Kevlar (Even his headband).

The jacket he wears is plated and weighs about 45 lbs or so (there's a scene where I think Becky, who is Rally's info person is rummaging around through Bean's apartment trying to find some info and accidentally knocks his jacket off a chair, which lands on her foot and breaks it.)

Bean is more or less an enigma in the Gunsmith Cat's universe. Almost everyone else is 'normal' relatively speaking, but Bean is more or less this superhuman that just occasionally shows up once in a while. So overall he's not a HUGE part of the story most of the time. The reason why Bean is so impressive is more or less BECAUSE he's the only ridiculously OP character in the show. Unlike something like Naruto, One Piece or My Hero Acadamia where the entire series has a cast of insanely over the top characters, Bean is the only one in Gunsmith Cats that is like this, which I think does add a bit of flair to it, because when Bean shows up you know what happens next is probably going to be epic, but it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

Rally is more than capable of handling herself in both the anime and the manga and Bean's inclusion is almost never a 'Deus Ex Machnia' sort of thing where he suddenly shows up and suddenly fixes the problem. He is more just like a force of nature that exists within the Gunsmith's Cats universe and while he does have his own moral code he doesn't really have a 'side' so you more or less just want to hope you're not in between him and whatever his objective is.

Half the time he's actually working AGAINST Rally, however he has nothing personal against her so he never threatens to kill her. So it's more of a, 'Sorry Rally, I have a job to do and you either get out of my way or shoot me.' sort of deal, and since the two have a history, Rally doesn't really want to kill Bean either. So he's not an enemy so much just an obstacle she has to deal with or work around half the time.

I know you are, but thats just another reason ive found the bean character to be a turn off.
Rally Vincent is the closest thing i think i have to a waifu, so i dont like that there are 2 canon representations of her that are different, and i blame that on bean haha.

But, the way your describing him in gunsmith cats sound fun so i shouldn't let this literal non reason keep me from giving the manga a chance.

Bean is an interesting character overall, I don't think you should be turned off by him.

As for Rally, technically the story of Riding Bean is canon to the Gunsmith Cat's universe (other than Rally's Hair) meaning that there is only one canon version of Rally. The main thing is that Rally and Bean eventually parted ways and Rally became a bounty hunter while Bean continued to be a driver for hire.

I forgot the canon reason they split up but it was explained in the manga. (I think they also said that she used to bleach her hair when she was with bean, which is why she was a blonde, but I'm not 100% sure on that.)

Overall, Rally's time with Bean was when she was immature and reckless, but as she got older she outgrew the outlaw lifestyle and became a bounty hunter instead.

Technically, but also not. Bean was initially a secondary character in Gunsmith Cats and He and Rally had no history together prior to that. But then he got his own spin-off with Blonde Rally who is Rally Vincent but is also not. What it comes down to is that Sonoda decided he liked Bean more than Rally so he changed things so that Bean was the main character without bothering to retcon anything from GC and we're just kinda supposed to roll with it.

Kinda like how Major Motoko Kusanagi From Ghost in the Shell went from being a hardass cyborg cop who also did lesbian cyberporn on her days-off in the manga to a much more emotionless and introspective character in later adaptations as Masamune delved deeper into the philosophical implications of cyberization.
