Country Music Thread Mk17Country code: blank.gif, country type: ponyflag, valid: 42085540

I haven't made a music thread in a while, but I saw this video today:
This beat is killing country music
I have to say, I pretty much agree.
I get it, gotta make the money, and the money comes from Pop-style music. But it is a shame imo, because everything I've been hearing on the radio lately is starting to blend together, and sound the same. Still some gems, but its getting pretty canned.

I know im not the only one here that listens to Country, so what do you guys think?

Also, post some of your favorite Country songs iit.

Lets not split hair between sub-genres ether haha.

Here is one of my favorites.
Mandolin Orange - Hey Stranger (Live on The Current)

All it takes to make a good country song is 3 chords and the truth.

I grew up on Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie and Garrison Keillor. And Stephen Foster, of course. Of course, "Folk Music" is much broader than just "Country."

I'm not familiar with him, but I've heard that song before. I stopped keeping up with new releases circa 1999. seems a lot of people did that, as evidenced by many Uber riders.

I don't know Free; only song I know of his/theirs is Toes, which is pretty good. But yeah, once Big and Rich happened, and all the weird crossovers, I said "Fuck this shit, I'm out."

I appreciate the ability of country music to mirror my mood and make me feel better about things, e.g.:

Chicken Fried (Greatest Hits Version) was their big break out hit iirc.

Toes is an amazing song too. He was like, the last main stream hold out haha. Now even he is using the canned beats /)_-

>But yeah, once Big and Rich happened, and all the weird crossovers, I said "Fuck this shit, I'm out."

Haha, Rascle Flatts was the last straw for me.
I never hated the cross overs once in a while, but its just the production line of "okay, mention a truck, a cooler brand, a beer brand, and say "tractor"... instant hit!" crap.

Luckly, off radio, there is still a lot of good stuff coming out Uncle Lucius - Keep The Wolves Away
>I appreciate the ability of country music to mirror my mood and make me feel better about things
Same, good or bad, there is always a song to compliment your mood.

I like how sometimes its a song you've heard a million times, that just hits you right, at the right time. But i guess thats a quality across genres.

Edit... for some reason i keep copying a pasting the same link...
Fixed... that was weird, the song changed on youtube, but the URL didnt haha.

My family actually came to visit me, and then dragged me to a Rascal Flatts concert that happened to be going on that same weekend here in town.

What annoyed me the most about the crossovers is when the people I grew up on started doing it, too. e.g. Kenny Chesney's early stuff is great, circa 2000 and after it sucks. Dwight Yoakam was fantastic, then around 2000 he went off the rails with weird experimental shit, then eventually he got back to his roots. There are very few people I can think of who weren't effected by the weirdness.

I stopped looking for new stuff. between bro country, alt country, canned beats, and everything else, just hasn't been worth my time. However, a lot of the neotraditionalists are still making music; it just doesn't make it on the radio.

pretty nice song.

Also, yeah that fair, everyone has different tastes. Its insainly hard to introduce someone to a band you like with just one song, esp if they have the range DMB has. Very mood dependent and stuff. But, he has a lot of cross-over with groups/artists you have mentioned so keep him in mind if your ever hard up for music to listen too. Restless Heart - Fast Movin' Train

sometimes I read the comments on the videos. this one stood out to me:
Every road trip that my late wife and I went on, Restless Heart's Greatest Hits went with us. I can still hear her voice singing these songs down those roads we traveled. I remember this one time in Colorado as the sun was setting this song came on the CD player. I pulled the Blazer over, got out, got her out, and right there on the side of the highway, we danced. Until we are together again Lady S.

that video makes a good point
I like mandolin orange, the current is my local station, theres a good scene up here. minnesota is more about bluegrass and folk, unlike nashville where they try to reinvent hank.

heres a good one.
Tim O'Brien & Darrell Scott - Long Time Gone

thats a good pedigree, similar to me

that song from civ 6 is actually a cover of an old civil war song called "hard times come again no more" a very good cover i might add, haven't played that game.

that johnny cash does a great cover, he had such respect for classic western music. not like nashville today.

A Boy Named Sue
I'm not much for country music, but everyone loves Johnny Cash. I was kinda surprised when I found out that this song was written by Shel "Where the Sidewalk Ends" Silverstein.

Before writing childrens poetry and soul-warming stuff like the Giving Tree, Mr. Silverstein was a cartoonist for Playboy.

And of course, Dr. Seuss produced some pretty notorious wartime propaganda.

>dr suess
>propaganda

The opposite in fact. Disney and others produced propaganda, Suess produced cautionary political cartoons against Nazi collaboration.

Hmmm...America First, sounds a lot like Make America Great Again...

MAGA was Reagan-era tho.
Doesn't make the slogan's heir less of a monkeyfuck, but out of all context, it'd be innocuous.

Charles Schulz was best wartime cartoonist. He gave it a human face.

Dr. Suess wrote at least one episode of Private Snafu:
What the HELL is Private Snafu? (A Propaganda Cartoon Secret)

Of course pretty much every industry was bent towards the war effort so that shouldn't really be surprising.

Brad Paisley can pretty much take all the credit for getting me into country music haha.

Specifically this song Brad Paisley Mud On The Tires Lyrics

That whole album was great to be honest. I say was because my friend through my copy out the window of my truck when i was in HS.

... he only liked rap music and death metal, and like, thought he was doing me a favor or something? It was a long walk home for him.
