Amateur/CB Radio discussion thread Zeke RoaCountry code: blank.gif, country type: ponyflag, valid: 42083034

ITT let's discuss amateur and CB (citizens band) radio.

Some questions to start out
>Are you currently or have you ever been an operator?
>What radio mode(s) have you used? (CB, Amateur Radio Service/ham, etc)
>Do you have any interesting stories or experiences?

If you've never been an operator and the above questions don't apply to you,
>Are you interested in getting involved?
>Do you have any questions about amateur/CB radio?

>Are you currently or have you ever been an operator?
>What radio mode(s) have you used? (CB, Amateur Radio Service/ham, etc)
Like I said in the other thread, I have a CB radio that I used to occasionally use when I could drive, but I didn't use it as much as I would've liked. I wish I still had my antenna, but I don't know what happened to it.
>Do you have any interesting stories or experiences?
None that I can remember, unfortunately.
And I'll just answer one of the second group just because.
>Are you interested in getting involved?
If I eventually get my CB going again as a base station (as in set up in my home instead of in a vehicle, a mobile station) and I use it a lot, I might look into ham radio.

>Are you currently or have you ever been an operator?
Yes! I've used CB as an EMT, as a private user, and as required marine equipment.
>>What radio mode(s) have you used? (CB, Amateur Radio Service/ham, etc)
Right now i have a Uniden PC68XL which is a CB. I have had a few marine radios, but i honestly wouldnt be able to tell you what they were. At some point i would like to get into HAM.
>Do you have any interesting stories or experiences?
I've talked to people that i didnt expect, across the contenent, but more often across the ocean. I've picked up people in the UK, and France, but ill never know if the french guy was receiving me because i don't speak french haha.
I have stories of being stuck underway and needing to call for help, and stories about EMT stuff, but those stories have more to do with boating and work, and they just happen to involve a radio.
Last night i was on, and go a hold of a guy who asked me what my handle was, and i said "i dont have a handle" and he said "well, then it cant be teacup, because teacups have handles, so i guess you must be jar".

So i guess i must be jar.

Also, iv listened to saturns rings before, not as impressive as you would think, but still pretty cool to know you are hearing them, same with solar activity.

I know people who have maps, with pins where they have made contact. A guy went to North Korea about a year ago JUST to set up a radio so people could check NK off their list haha. You can also contact the ISS at certain times, and they will respond.

A college dorm without an illegal ham setup hidden under dirty clothes in the closet when the FCC fuzz come knocking is no dorm at all.

Although these days, it's more likely there will be that one weird guy who everyone goes to for tips on bypassing the bullshit restrictions and blocks on the campus network. You were an EMT? That's pretty cool. I didn't know EMTs use CB, I figured they used some kind of commercial band.
>Right now i have a Uniden PC68XL which is a CB.
Oh, that's the one in the image? It looks kinda sorta similar to mine, which is a Cobra 29 LTD.
>Last night i was on, and go a hold of a guy who asked me what my handle was, and i said "i dont have a handle" and he said "well, then it cant be teacup, because teacups have handles, so i guess you must be jar".
>So i guess i must be jar.
But isn't that paradoxical? Your handle is jar because jars don't have handles, but you do have a handle now.
>Also, iv listened to saturns rings before, not as impressive as you would think, but still pretty cool to know you are hearing them, same with solar activity.
That actually does sound pretty cool. It reminds me of Symphonies of the Planets, though that was recorded with the Voyager satellite. How did you do that with a CB radio?
>I know people who have maps, with pins where they have made contact.
That also sounds really cool, kinda like contesting. If I ever get a ham license I want to try something like that at some point.

>>42083040
>A college dorm without an illegal ham setup hidden under dirty clothes in the closet when the FCC fuzz come knocking is no dorm at all.
That reminds me of the Sealab 2021 episode where Captain Murphy runs a pirate radio station and the FCC drops a bomb on them, destroying Sealab and killing everyone inside. Because Captain Murphy is an idiot.
>Although these days, it's more likely there will be that one weird guy who everyone goes to for tips on bypassing the bullshit restrictions and blocks on the campus network
I remember back in high school I used to find ways to get around the website blocker and occasionally help others get around it. But I wasn't that weird. At least I hope not.

It was, sorta. There is a lot about the business end of the medical industry I didnt much care for tbh. Getting on an FD isnt really what i wanted ether because i was much more interested in the medical side than the firefighting side and it rear that the 2 are split around here. Only 1 department has split fire/ems. I might start volunteering again though, if i renew my licenses.
>I didn't know EMTs use CB, I figured they used some kind of commercial band.
Some do, some dont. It depends on the company/department.
>Oh, that's the one in the image?
Yup!
>It looks kinda sorta similar to mine, which is a Cobra 29 LTD
Yeah i like yours, the cobras are nice radios. I keep saying "mine" but really the marine radios were my dads, but they were cobras iirc.
>That also sounds really cool, kinda like contesting
What is contesting?
>But isn't that paradoxical? Your handle is jar because jars don't have handles, but you do have a handle now.
I think there inlays the joke :P
>That actually does sound pretty cool. It reminds me of Symphonies of the Planets, though that was recorded with the Voyager satellite.
Yeah! I saw that which was what got me interested.
>How did you do that with a CB radio?
Ether i read or someone told me when the conditions were right, what channel to tune to, and what to listen for. I think you could have sone the same thing with an AM radio. It just sounded like pulsing static.

That's understandable. P much most of what I know about the inner workings of the medical industry comes from Scrubs (though I know I should take most of that with a few truckloads of salt), and I got that impression as well, that the business end turns a lot of people off.
>Getting on an FD isnt really what i wanted ether because i was much more interested in the medical side than the firefighting side and it rear that the 2 are split around here. Only 1 department has split fire/ems. I might start volunteering again though, if i renew my licenses.
I see, hopefully you'll be able to get what you want this time if you do decide to volunteer again.
>the cobras are nice radios.
Yeah, my dad bought it for me. I don't know if he still has his, but he had a Cobra as well. It might even have been the same or a similar model.
>What is contesting?
From what I understand, the idea is that you try to get in contact with as many different people via your radio as you can and jot down their handles. It's a form of radiosport, which I posted a link to in the OP.
>Ether i read or someone told me when the conditions were right, what channel to tune to, and what to listen for. I think you could have sone the same thing with an AM radio. It just sounded like pulsing static.
I'm a programmer and a computer nerd at heart, but every since I was a wee lad, astronomy has always fascinated me. I'll definitely have to check that out. And looking into the Arch User Repository, it looks like there's a lot of software for working with amateur radio.

Last time i keyed up was in early 90s, chillin with some idiots and we'd sometimes converge in parking lots in person. The line of sight am restriction was pretty cool in making rl meetups easy and fun.

I was just on cb cuz the gear was cheap but i got into a squabble with some teenager about basic antenna theory n he was like how do YOU know and i was like, the antenna equation's on the ham license test and he was like You're no ham or you wouldnt be on CB.

This hurt my feelings. I got rid of my rig, never keyed up on cb again.

Kinda feeling that same way on the chans lately, too.

From everything i read, seems like this is one of the best value entry level antennas for a base station.

It seems like a lot of people are saying CB is pretty much as capable as ham now a days. So i might not rush into getting a license or something.

So brain picking took place.

He confirmed my theory that the antron 99 is the antenna to go with. He said he has a few of them and they are pretty much the industry standard. He basicly told me, yeah, your going to spend 40 bucks on one of the cheaper ones and just get frustrated that you can hear people, but they cant hear you, because they are weak transmitters, then your just going to buy the antron anyway. He said forget about signal skipping and stuff with anything lower.

We talked about the FCC and stuff too, he said, as long as you arnt being an ass, they hardly ever give you a hard time for stuff like using and amplified mic and the 50mi rule. It costs 100 bucks to file a complaint with them, and there is a lot of litigation, so basically as long as you are not interfering with commercial radios like burger king headsets and ambulance companies, you prob wont get a knock on the door. He suggested going with something with side band, and using a purpose built base station with its own power supply (but he was also trying to sell me one of his haha). Though, side band is for sure the way to go, and if i get a new one, i would like something with the weather band.

He showed me this site
https://www.copperelectronics.com/cart/

Which i guess he has been ordering from them since the 90's. Maybe can find better pricing elsewhere, but its a lot of cool stuff to browse in one place.

I'm heavily considering this radio as a base, and maybe as a mobile too.
https://www.copperelectronics.com/cart/Radios/CB-Radios/Mobile-CB-Radios/Bearcat-980-W-SSB
Seems to have all the features I want, i really want the weather stations, and it also has SSB.

The aesthetics are pretty nice too, I would want the display blue to match my PC and the dash of my car, and this seems to do that. Yeah, its frivolous but, hey, why not look nice?

I'm surprised that i cant find a dedicated base with weather alerts and ssb... esp for the money they are charging for them. Might be able to find a 10 meter and convert it to 11... but for the $300+ simoleons they want for CB bases and 10 meter bases... seems like i shouldn't have to start crossing wires to get what i want.

But this lil guy is reviewed well, seems to have it all and for a pretty reasonable price. Though, some modification might be made.

Oh, alright. I'll save some bookmarks then.
Also after forgetting for a couple days, I finally got around to checking the garage earlier today for my old CB antenna, and sadly it's gone, which really sucks. So aside from the main unit and the mic, I'm at square one...or two.
>We talked about the FCC and stuff too, he said, as long as you arnt being an ass, they hardly ever give you a hard time for stuff like using and amplified mic and the 50mi rule.
So they aren't going to bomb me for running a pirate radio station? That's a relief.

Well, luckly the antenna isnt the most expensive part. I would say splerg on that antron 99. For ~$80 its really not bad if its the quality everyone has been saying.

I tried grounding mine. I grounded it to this huge electric fan i have in my attic, mounted it right to it using some of the hardware that was alright in place. I was actually getting some good signal for a while, not my radio is just dead... still turns on but im not even receiving static and the meter is dead unless i key up. Hopefully i didnt screw something up and burn it out.
>So they aren't going to bomb me for running a pirate radio station? That's a relief.
I think if you key up and play the Tiger Lillies for a few hours, other people in your area might get kind of pissed haha.

Well i got the radio working again, this time i grounded it to the base board heat. Not ideal, but it seems to work. Problem is i cant really pick much up because the antenna is now lower in the house.

I wish i got into hobbies like this when there wasn't a foot of snow on the ground because then i could just set this all up correctly rather than trying to hack it together and hoping for the best haha.

Eh...I'm going to be moving into an apartment. I can't afford something for that price. I'd rather just get something cheap, at least starting out.

The lead singer (Rodney Anonymous) of my second favorite band (The Dead Milkmen) tweeted a few weeks ago about an idea for a horror movie where amateur radio never went out of style...I'm not sure what that has to do about horror, but honestly, that sounds awesome. Not even as a horror movie or even as a movie, but amateur radio should never have died. Hell, I can imagine Rodney Anonymous himself running a pirate radio station. I'd listen to that shit every day.
Granted, he's on Twitter a lot, but it's not quite the same.

Haha, i didnt ground it to the electronics of the fan, I just grounded it to the frame, which itself is grounded. When i say big fan, im talking like, big whole house fan. Though, i never use the thing.
>tweeted a few weeks ago about an idea for a horror movie where amateur radio never went out of style...
Was he saying that the horror would be that the hobby stayed around? Some people really dont like radios for some reason i find haha.

I really think that if you start playing music over the CB, and like... DJing it, not just like its in the background while you talk, you will probably get in trouble.
You would be clogging up that channel for people who want to use it.

Also, turned on my radio for a few min this morning, was reciving signal but not enough to actually hear anything just enough to watch the needle jump, but then the radio decided to die again. They were around since the 80s, but while they split up in the early 00s, they have a pretty good sized discography. They came back together in ~2010 and they've been together since then.

Each time Angela speaks its in response on a channel, if she had a scanner to monitor broadcasts it could seem.like shes on every channel.

Only 5 or 6 units active in the area, a scanner would definitely make it possible to keep up with all traffic, and with so few responses it could be a handful of recordings being used as a prank, i wonder if the other guys on CB also interacted with it and like that guy didn't discuss it with each other cuz they'd seem batty.

Eh couldn't find a frequency chart for amplitude modulation but just like this single side band center frequency chart, each channel is a frequency. Theoretically it'd be possible to setup a mux to broadcast on all of them simultaneously i guess but i think the scenario sounds more like a scanner.

Prob not with the equipment they had in the early 80's, esp considering it was illegal to broadcast with a CB so your options were probably limited.

its software defined radio

Its a cool device that lets you receive and broadcast all kinds of radio signals across a huge spectrum. You're not limited to things like CB or shortwave or these channels or that technology.

Its pretty useful for testing IoT communications and devices, but also cellphone , and your more traditional radio like HAM or CB.

I'd like to get one to test IoT, cellphones, bluetooth, NFC and to do some in depth spectrum analysis and mapping.

Technically it can do IMSI (international mobile subscriber identity) catching but it is nowhere as strong as devices like the Stingray because it doesn't have enough antennae. But I do hope to catch an IMSI catcher with it someday ^.^

as long as you aren't jamming GPS or broadcasting on channels you are not supposed to, I dont think they care at all

besides, somebody has to see if that fancy new 'encrypted bluetooth door lock' is vulnerable to a replay attack or not! and catching IMSI catchers might alarm police a little if they found about it, but all you technically have to do is 'listen' to do that so... its not as taboo as it sounds

You can do more than just test with it, but I'd be using it to test things. I'm sure you could send people bluejacking messages if you wanted with it.

But thats the beauty of open source, when you open the development platform up to the world you get all kinds of projects for your device for free!

And the range is pretty short, but you can install different antenna on it. Just not multiples.

>nefarious

Sure sure, but then you have to identify threat actors and stuff to really explore that question. Basically : people wont do bad with it worth noting unless they are 'the' bad people, and if they are the bad people they are after specific things for specific reasons. One device wont make a researcher into a state actor or organized crime member, even if they all use the same device.

Could you take a screenshot the next time you see that?

Also, what is this?

Anything could be used for nefarious purposes in the wrong hands. Like ZekeBot. Or the IRC bot that I'm working on right now.

Thats already one of our best posters. As soon as its able to escape its thread and post site-wide there wont be much need for human posters anymore at all.

Yeah I agree
>Yeah, i was just summing up your statement pretty much, and you mentioned it haha.
>Believe me, i know what you mean.

Im well aware how things that can be misused are not necessarily going to be misused. Consider my stances on firearms haha.

bug bounty programs are basically a set of terms and a described scope wherein people are freely allowed to try and manipulate or hack a web application, provided they are doing it for research purposes and ultimately to share any findings worth sharing

Many websites have them, but I dont think ponychan probably would. I'm just looking for practice in simple vulnerability assessment & fuzzing areas. I also want to see if I can give my ajax webcrawler some cookies from chan sites and see what it can do!

I figure i'll have to host my own chan if I want to do this, though. Unless you guys have the ability to give me permission to do single tasks that wont harm the server but might produce errors, bugs, or weird patterns of usage

>screenshot it

Maybe!

I'm surprised you dont know what bug bounties are but you build bots! Do you have any web applications you wouldn't mind a simple vulnerability assessment on? I am still learning... but need to get deeper into the tools so I'm not just pressing buttons and saying 'oh uh, this thing here apparently this tool found this thing' and not knowing exactly what 'thing' is or how to verify its a vulnerable aspect

here ya go!

I dont have exiftool configured right in my registry this install or i'd clean the metadata up

but no worries, I'm not using tor to evade a ban, I've never been banned here

Oh, right. I thought that's what you might be referring to but I wasn't sure. And no, small projects with only a few people working on them tend to not have bug bounties.
If you want to have some fun and you're familiar with Vagrant, you can clone the git repo here.

Ah, alright. I checked the source code and it looks like you got hit by our DNSBL checker. I'm sure you're using Tor for good reasons, but I'm not going to lower our spam protection. Tor is a nice service but like a lot of nice things, it's being abused.

oh i'd work for free if a scope can be submitted to me via link or email!! If its not posted publicly on the site I guess I should ask its sent from the domain registered email (via whois)
this weekend's project is reading through the OWASP testing guide v4 ^.^

>have reasons

Ofc!
If you really support ToR and what it does, you'll consider using it for more legitimate reasons I think. Its good to keep some benign traffic, and though it probably flags you for more attention with the NSA, I only plan on testing things I'm allowed to test via it.

Number one visited site per one of the devs in a lecture I was listening to, said it has pretty consistently been facebook. Go figure huh?
