Walking thread Chewy!!Twilight SparkleCountry code: ponies-twilight.png, country type: ponyflag, valid:   42073337

tl;dr: How many of you here take walks outside regularly? Let's talk about the activity/hobby of walking.

I have been taking daily walks since early November last year and I have started to really love it. Sometimes I just do a short 10-minute walk around my immediate neighborhood, sometimes I walk downtown to get coffee and/or food, sometimes I push myself to go much further distances and into neighborhoods I'm not familiar with, and a few times I have even taken walks in an entirely different town.

I walk even when its really cold, or grey, or raining, and today it even started snowing/hailing while I was walking, but it wasn't too bad. I'm still kind of amazed that I have been able to do this and am continuing to do this, because for so long I engaged in basically zero physical activity at all. I was (and to an extent still am) basically a couch potato. I also eat pretty poorly, although in recent years I have incorporated a lot of fruit into my diet, which I'm hoping helps at least a little.

This is one of those examples of something I never really thought I'd be able to do, but now here I am consistently doing it, and furthermore enjoying it, like I said every single day. It feels really good and I think it happened because I basically just reached a point where I realized "I need to do more, I need to do this" and I truly set my mind to it and just did it.

pic related is a sign in my neighborhood that amused me.

I use to walk a lot. I live on the East Coast Greenway, which is a great walking/biking path. I used it more when I couldnt see it from my house haha.

I really should start again.

The longest i ever walked on that path was like 30 miles... i walked to a friends house on the other side of the state. Was really fun, except i was wearing boots, work boots, cheap ones... so blister city.

I like to hike a lot, but obv not daily. I should get into a routine. I see you posting about it and feel like a lazy jerk haha.

I don't walk, but I started running 2.5 mile stretches a few months ago. I used to do it every day, but fell off of my routine throughout November and December. Over the new year, I'm going to be more consistent, and in a month's time, I want to try and cut my mile time down to 8 minutes.

I've been walking consistently every day for the past four days, on the order of roughly three miles total, going back and forth from a local shopping plaza / food district.
I'm fairly impressed, as until recently I was something of a shut-in (long story), and I've not been especially exhausted by this, so I am hoping to try out new routes and destinations that go somewhat longer. I certainly enjoy the rather free feeling, and finding random weirdness in the neighborhood is a simple pleasure I enjoy too.

I used to really, really love midnight walks.
Now I can't take them without creepy guys following behind me in cars yelling "Hey baby girl!", so that's... nice.
Maybe I just need to take them even later so even assholes aren't out.

I used to go for midnight walks when I lived in a pretty rural area. That was one of the few things I liked about living in a small town.

Yeah, cities have lots of upsides, and I really couldn't imagine living in a rural or suburban area full-time... but I really, really love getting out of the city on a frequent basis. It can be kinda loud and frightening living here sometimes.
Back where I grew up, you had to walk five miles to get anywhere, but that does come with the benefit that you can walk those five miles with no problems, generally.

I walk to and from work every day. (It's about 20 minutes each way.)

A light snow started while I was walking today.

I was diagnosed with epilepsy a few months before I went to Job Corps, and my mother and sister moved to the city while I was at Job Corps (but not because of my epilepsy). Even if I wanted to live in a small town, I can't drive and in a small town, easily reachable bus stops aren't guaranteed. In order to get to the closest bus stop, I had to either get a ride (Getting a carpool to a bus stop is ridiculous) or do a half-hour bike ride.
Plus I grew up in Southern California and I was raised in a (fairly) large city.
