Tabletops ☲ Prince Ember Storm!MSNowBALLkCountry code: ponies-twilight.png, country type: ponyflag, valid:   42071291

Hey, /oat/, let's talk tabletop games, specifically RPGs. For those not in the know, TTRPGs are games like Dungeons & Dragons, but aren't limited to fantasy. There are plenty of systems (what players of TTRPGs call different rulesets) that are set in a whole boatload of different worlds, from the fantasy of D&D, to the cyberpunk of Shadowrun, to the space-traversing grittiness that is Stars Without Number. There's even systems where the core setting is actually a multiverse where all those are true, like GURPS!

The great thing about these is that your creativity and the setting are the only two real limitations to what you can do. Even if what you want doesn't necessarily fit in the rules, the DM can make it fit, and that's part of what makes these games fun.

So, /oat/, do you play any tabletops? If so, what? What sort of characters do you enjoy playing? Are you a DM? What do you DM? Do you homebrew anything?

For those of you who don't play any of these games, would you?

I've been playing The Dark Eye - Germany's premier RPG - for over twenty years, ten plus years of which as DM.

I play a variety of heroes that are self-sacrificing and go out of their way to help others and try to avoid conflict. I play two wizards (father and daughter), a narcissitic fencer (d'Artagnan style), a clock-maker turned burglar (due to his gambling debts), a cleric of the God of Sun (pretty much medievil Catholic church style, witch-burning included) a clumsy dwarvish innkeep who regularly break things and reptilian hunter that hates all mammals.

As a DM I focus mainly on making the NPCs the heroes meet interesting, charming and likeable (or hateable).

I also played some Tales of Equestria but only "online" and I participated in a session or two of Shadowrun but didn't really get into it that much. I might join a Call of Cthulhu group at some point when I have more time available.

Im currently a DM im running a home brew game, where people have been abducted, then they reappear at random. However these people die 24 hours later. Ive been struggling with running the game so it feels smooth. And from what ive found its mainly due to the players saying that imagination is not their strong sute.

I try to focus on building the world around them so that they do not feel board. Though lately ive had a feeling that im not doing so great as a DM.

I like playing naturey characters. Druids Totem Barbs, Oath Of Ancients Paladins...

What system?

>>42071293
So it's a fantasy RPG? How does it compare to D&D, if you know.

>>42071297
As a DM, I've had players that don't get along in my parties before, and it's unfortunate, but sometimes something has to be done about it.

My apologies that you haven't been able to find a group that fits what you want out of a game.

>>42071299
No, of course not. You're a mod and too busy for that.

Dunno if you saw, but tomorrow there won't be a session because of Christmas Eve/Christmas for Dray

>>42071300
It takes practice! 5e D&D is a good system to get into because it's so accessible to new players. It has a decent guide for character creation, too!

The roleplay aspect is the hardest part and takes some practice, but even then, 5e helps you pick traits and flaws that make it easier to understand how your character would act.

I recommend starting with 5e until you have a good grasp on things and then switching to a more complex but versatile system like Pathfinder.

Or, if fantasy isn't your strong suit, Stars Without Number is a really good, really simple sci-fi RPG. It's a bit gritty though, and your characters can die pretty easily, but it's a really neat system.

>>42071307
Yes, it is. TDE goes into extreme details regarding descriptions of regions, countries, towns and villages and has a meta-plot that has continued pretty much since its creation 30+ years ago.

This is its strength and weakness, as you risk bumping heads with the meta-plot if you try to create your own villages or towns or bad guys.

While your characters can become very strong and extremely competent in their field, they cannot become all-powerful superheroes. TDE heroes are often "normal people that do extraordinary things".

Magic in TDE is not around every corner, many people have never seen a wizard. It's a game that tries (often in vein) to be realistic with how countries are run and set up (one of my main issues at the start of an adventure is logically answering 'why do they need the heroes anyway?')

Gloomhaven is more a legacy game though, one play session through a quest could unlock other quests, new items in a shop, a new class to play. It's kind of a neat idea how the whole game opens up and changes every time you play.

I've now been in a Pathfinder group for almost a year and it's been a fun little hobby.
Our biggest issue is fixing the group. It's been joining and leaving all the time.
The DM is doing well I think, esp. since some sort of vice-DM left who kept butting in, but I don't get why we have so many NPCs that are also loose party members.

I like most any RPG that isn't D&D. I try to play something different every time, but the most interesting characters have a social dimension to them. I could probably GM if I wanted, but I'm not often in need of a game so bad I have to make one. Currently in a Starfinder and a homebrewed Ironclaw game.

In terms of other tabletop games than just your RPGs, I've been fucking entranced by Keyforge. It's a concept I've wanted to exist since I first got into tabletop games - basically, it's Sealed: The Card Game.

Like, you know how Magic The Gathering has Sealed, a format of play in which you buy a couple booster packs there at the game store, make something workable out of the garbage, and play with it, and everyone else has to do the same so it's basically fair? No endless deck-crafting using hundreds of dollars to buy rares on Amazon, just, like, the best you can make in five minutes with whatever?

The creator of Magic made another game called Keyforge and it's that. You buy a booster at the store... except it's not a booster, it's a whole, procedurally generated, usable deck, containing everything you need, and you can't change anything about it, and you have to play with that. No, you can't use the cards to make a better deck - all your cards are marked with a procedurally generated name of your "character", so people can tell if you try.

You can totally just buy two decks at the game shop and throw one to your friend and say "let's play". Or you can collect and trade entire decks with people, based on anything from their power, to their style of play, to how cute-sounding the character name is. This creates such a great, laidback community for the game, because you can't "game" it. You have to be kinda casual about the whole thing, and only focus on how good you are as a player, not on being a rich and clever deckcrafter.

The character name thing is kinda irrationally my favorite part. I love knowing that "The Smith that Unleashes Needles" is a unique name, that only I have, and that he is my baby, and I can put him against other peoples' babies in combat to the death - it's kinda like the pokemon video games in that way. I always loved them mostly because I could have cute named pokemon I could collect and enjoy. And now I can do this with a LCG/CCG, which never happens. I can be like, "Oh my gosh, I looove playing with Arnliotr the College Overlord, he has such cool combos, you can borrow him if you want, but remember to get him back to me because he's my favorite! ❤❤❤"

I'm seriously in love.

As for TTRPGs specifically, I reeeally wanna get another campaign of The Quiet Year in - I think my first campaign of it was honestly the best RPG I've ever played. Anyone else ever played it? It's a really neat concept.

Basically, it's fully cooperative (though separations in opinions may divide you), you play general forces of opinion in a community instead of specific people, and you build up a post-apocalyptic society together, trying to prepare it for the big threat that will come once time runs out. It's really interesting, in that it leads to infighting surprisingly easily, even though you all know you should be working to fortify things... before you know it, tons of utter nonsense is distracting from that. Things get so complicated via events and resource problems that you end up being one of those idiotic post-apocalyptic societies you're always yelling at in movies - "Stop infighting, focus on keeping out the zombies!!!", you say. But when you're actually roleplaying that situation, and getting your citizens what you need feels like the most important thing, because there's a clear class disparity that needs to be addressed, and we really shouldn't be using the death penalty so that needs to be stopped, etc, etc, etc... you suddenly understand why Rick Grimes had such a hard time.

They're an unofficial website to play Keyforge online, using the Jinteki codebase. (The same open source codebase used to run websites that allow you to play Android: Netrunner, Game of Thrones TCG, and Lord of the Rings TCG.)

Using the existing official deck registry that lets you scan your deck right in via QR code, it lets you play with all your real decks online at the click of a button, which is really cool. Great way to practice with a deck you're feeling middling about. Currently, I'm trying to see if there's any better way to pilot "The Empress of Nulltown" - she's got a cool name, and her Dis and Shadows cards are all flawless. She has a bunch of decidedly less neat Logos cards, though, and I wanna see if they really are dead weight and I shouldn't bring her to tourneys, or if I just need to pilot her better...

The tabletop that I've been currently enjoying thanks to a local card shop is a game called Gloomhaven which is like a board game DnD with a legacy attached to it.

takes about an hour to set up properly by yourself, but once you do you can get through each session in about 1-2 hours and only have to make minor changes if you want to keep going or play a failed session again.

biggest "hurdle" for people is the $140 price tag on the game, so most have heard about it without playing it.

I think you should try actual D&D. Not only is it free, but it's a persistent game and is quite fun, too.

Ah, yes, I'm deeply entrenched in the board game community, much more than the rpg community, and Gloomhaven was everyone's baby a while ago. It's still extremely well regarded.

It's not my thing because I personally enjoy maximum playtimes of an hour, streamlined pieces, and streamlined mechanics, of which it has none. It's big and crunchy. Which is really nice and a selling point for a lot of people, of course.

Still, I'll play anything if you get me drunk enough. Or just ask nicely.

My favorite board game of all time is Onitama, which is 10 pieces of plastic, a small handful of cards, and a soft mat. Elegant as hell, play me on the app some time, unf it's good 👌

Playing even more Keyforge recently, I'm obsessed. Me and my boyfriend have been working through a box of decks, finding all the cool ones. My favorite thing is that none are shit. The algorithm only makes slightly substandard decks, as far as I can tell - nothing downright bad. The worst I've seen is a deck with bad house consistency, where it was hard to synergize within any given house. Mars had some, that's about it. But it still forged 2 Keys. So it was viable. And I dig that.

This game might go on to be something truly special for me. I never managed to get to a high level of play in Netrunner or Star Wars Destiny. I actually might here. I think that Malfunction Brainiac Jennilyn and The Selfish Alchemist of Caerrock are amazing decks I could go far with, and I trust myself to pilot them. I feel confident. Sooo... I'm pretty excited 😸

I do indeed play tabletops.

Or, I did, last year and the year before that, up until March/April/a bit of May.

Back then it was all about D&D 3.5, my favorite system out there, both in edition for D&D and for overall TTRPG.

But before I talk about that, I'll bring you back to my first time playing a Tabletop.

For years when I was a kid the idea of playing Dungeons and Dragons was stuck in my head as a Really Cool Thing. This was back when 4th Edition was going strong, and I didn't know anything but the basics about the past of the game. I got the Starter Box Set of 4th Edition for Christmas one year, probably 2012 or so, and eventually collected a couple other books outside of that.

However, I never played 4th edition. The idea of playing D&D eventually faded from the forefront of my mind.

That was until late 2016. My sister (then brother) was getting into 5th Edition, since it was starting to gain popularity. I don't really remember what exactly started it, but Curse of Strahd had just come out and we had the idea of getting some old friends from our Youth Group from our parents church to play it with us.

We played that game of Curse of Strahd from October to the end of December, usually once a week with the occasional delay. We stopped when one of our members shipped out to boot camp after joining the army a month before. We played a couple times after that, but eventually it just fell apart.

That was the last I played of D&D for about half a year.

It wasn't until after working at McDonalds for several months and hearing about the game a manager had started with friends he knew and some coworkers that I was invited to play my first game of D&D 3.5. It was not at first the game that my manager friend was doing, but instead one a coworker had started going to a month before inviting me.

This started, from around the end of May of 2017, my stint with 3.5 that ended only once I moved to my current location in March of last year (2018).

During the course of that near-year of 3.5, I played in five different 3.5 campaigns, but only two of which lasted for very long. Those being the one I first joined, which lasted until I moved, and the first campaign by my manager friend at work (remember, from earlier?), which ended after my character died and they didn't feel like finishing up the end of the campaign.

Aside form 3.5, that same group whose game fell apart when my character died (not because, it just happened to coincide with them getting bored of it), eventually started up the 2003 Lord of the Rings tabletop game, which we played from around October of 2017 to June 2018 (after I moved they switched to me dropping in from online). I actually went back for my 21st birthday and played the last session of the campaign in person.

As far as that went, we finished up the campaign, which took place a few decades before the War of the Ring, and we were going to do a campaign with the same characters that took place during the War of the Ring and then one more in the 4th age, but the DM kind of got creatively burnt out and we ended up just finishing there. I don't think the group still gets together.

Sadly, since moving away I have no been involved in any tabletops aside from the aforementioned Lord of the Rings which ended in the middle of last year. I have also not heard from any of my friends that I played with back where I used to live in many months.

My friend from work who was in both the main 3,5 campaign I was in and the Lord of the Rings group was going to start his own campaign, DMing for the first time, and he was planning on having a setup so I could drop in from online, but that so far hasn't gone anywhere and I haven't heard anything.

As far as opportunities to play out here or online, I've so far only had one, which is Pathfinder with my ex, online, which should hopefully start soon.

As for in person games, I haven't looked.

(Also if anyone is doing an online game and could use another person please let me know, I would love to play if my schedule allows)

Wait, actually, scratch that.

My first time playing a tabletop of any kind was Pathfinder in like 2014 or 2015 with Dashy, Ember, and Mondo.

I almost completely forgot about that.

I actually legitimately enjoyed that campaign, even though it just kind of fell apart.

I will never forget my Jar of Dwarf Blood.

Hell, I'm even using my character's name as my name on the chan now.

I've played DnD/Pathfinder/GURPs/etc with a few groups who were local, but after the 4th or 5th session the DM decides he's bored and either changes the campaign or quits altogether. Longest group I had played for about a year, and then I ended up in the hospital for a month and never heard from them again...

>>42073733
I like the crunchiness of Gloomhaven, I was a big fan of RISK Legacy too since it was always different when you played again. I like games where there's a changing world and it's not the same each time you set up the board.

The card shop has a copy of Onitama and I can say I enjoyed it the few times I played. It's like chess, but quicker and much easier to play but still has the same kind of depth chess has.

I haven't played Keyforged yet, but from what I heard it's a lot of fun and gets rid of the lootbox/gachapon/booster or whatever they're calling it nowadays part of TCGs out there. I should give it a try, but like many things of that nature... no one I know is selling the game nor playing it.

Huh, I live in DC, and I'm on vacation in Florida right now, and in both places, the Keyforge community is huge and thriving, with friendly local game stores selling packs by the box to dozens of active players, and tourneys every couple weeks. Seems like the biggest shit since Magic. I'm pumped.
Where do you live? Your card store might have tourneys and just doesn't rep them well, you never know.

Yeah, the lack of boosters is sooo overwhelmingly nice. Last month, I walked in, bought one deck, and it was amazing and fun, and I've been learning to pilot it ever since. One deck gave me everything I needed, and it's really always that way, and it's great.
Then I bought a whole box of decks anyway.
All card games should be so accessible and fair.

Yeah, I guess my brain fries when there's progress in a game. It's why in video games, I almost exclusively play roguelikes. I hate having to keep track of a narrative.
That said, I am really, really loving Betrayal Legacy. It's been such a crazy, crazy ride. People have killed little girls, buried horrors beneath the floorboards to stay there forever, lived supernaturally long lives, and drowned in rats. It's magnificent.

I've never liked chess. Abstract strategy games with identical starting board states every single game bore me to tears. With the expansion set of cards, it basically becomes impossible to ever play the same game twice, and that's enchanting.
My other great love is Santorini. Abstract strategy with player powers, sign me the hell up!

I live in mid-state NY (Not north enough to be Upstate, not south enough to be a burrow in the city) and I've only got one place left in the area who even deals in card games.
They sell MtG, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, DBZ TCG, and Force of Will... but nothing on Keyforge yet.

The only thing I heard was I would like to play a draft in Keyforge since everyone is required to buy a deck and go in to a tourney cold, with no knowledge of how the deck works.

>Betrayal Legacy

Sounds fun, I'll have to see when someone is willing to play or even if the card shop has it.

I prefer Pathfinder to DnD myself, but that's just because there's so much to work off of at lvl 1 and it just gets crazier from there.

As far as fantasy goes my current favorite is 13th Age, more focused on narrative with enough rule structure to keep strategy and chance as important factors. For sci-fi types I prefer Shadowrun, because I like my cyborgs to fight wizards.

I used to focus on really gimmicky characters until I realized that I sucked at them and it just made things awkward and lead to me just giving up and following people. My favorite character was a me going a bit more simple. The setting in his backstory was the most unusual thing about him, as I played him he was just a ranger from a swamp who cooked almost every monster he killed and really wanted to fuck an elf. At one point he got kicked out of a shrine for trying to use a day old griffon head as an offering.

it begins
I've bought a display box, and it's given me a good variety of powerful decks. Only 100 bucks if you're getting it for any sort of reasonable uninflated deal.
But for anyone else who's not a lunatic, my advice is, go to your local game store and play Sealed (buy the deck there and play immediately), and keep the decks every time you do that. Gives you more fun and more usefulness for every deck, since even the weakest ones might be up against even weaker ones that day. The trick to having a lot of fun in Keyforge is just playing with all your decks, even the kinda lame ones, and just making sure it's balanced between you and your opponent. Get two bad ones and ask your dog if they want to play, etc 🐕

Also, people tryhard enough to be using the crucible usually have absurdly good decks, so there's that. It's kinda skewed compared to what playing with normal people is like.
