What obscure things do you nerd out about but can't find others who share your passion for?

Series, topics, etc. Example:
>"Hey, have you seen [the latest generic action film]?"
>"Yeah! Oh, which reminds me, have you heard the latest episode of [podcast]?"
>"What is that, a type of goat?"
And then you end up talking at them instead of with them and you know that, in their brains, they're already filing the conversation away as you being into some weird goat radio thing.

So, what's your weird goat radio thing, /oat/?

I'm very into mythology and webcomics.

Philosophy.

But not philosophers. I can find people that want to discuss the history of philosophy and what other philosophers have done, but most people aren't interested in philosophy itself.

That and sex. Not many people share my passion for sex.

Philosophy's weird in how much it changes over time/culture. The big questions that people were really wrestling with in, say, the 1800s (e.g. the extent to which the human body is mechanical), look stupid now.

I recently had it pointed out that the modern obsession with love is really bizarre. It's a regularly-temporary emotion and it feels good, sure, but doesn't actually fix anything and causes a lot of problems, and yet we dedicate so many thousands of songs, films and more to the idea that it's some sort of divine magic, which is actually pretty dumb.

(Doesn't stop me thinking Cadence is awesome, but it's still odd.)

And I relate on the sex thing. It's hard to talk to people about sex without them thinking you're hitting on them, and that's a shame because sex is really interesting. By the way, my dissertation on porn (which I think I mentioned before?) turned out well! But knowing the history just makes the taboo more frustrating, haha...

I think the core concept of philosophy never really changes, more just the way it is applied does. As for the love thing, I can't say much about it since I have never experienced it, however I will agree there are WAY too many songs devoted to it and it feels really weird hearing songs that talk about love like everyone is expected to know what it's like and being that one person it doesn't really apply to. Especially since it's touted as a universal constant of the species. Doesn't help me feel as included, I can tell you that much.

As for sex, yeah. Most people won't take the topic seriously.

>But not philosophers

Are you serious Toy?

That's literally not even possible. I'm sorry but you're not genuinely interested in philosophy if you're not actually reading the works of the philosophers who have most likely already explored in-depth everything you yourself philosophize about.

How would you feel if someone said "I'm really passionate about sex" but had never had it or even masturbated before? And just assumed they knew a lot about sex because they had skimmed some porn sites?

No.

It's more like saying, "I like to play music." but no one else wants to discuss musical theory or composition with you and instead just wants to discuss their favorite songs and bands. There is a difference between being a musician and a music lover and there is a difference between being a philosopher and simply discussing the history of philosophy.

People say I'm knowledgeable about guns, but they're probably stretching it.

Other than that, I'd also like to learn about birds.

>>42061710

False equivalency.

It is possible to analyze all kinds of things about music, describe the composition and general sound and how it makes you feel (especially since a lot of music doesn't involve music theory at all) just by listening. But you do have to listen to it.

You can't take some random album and say "this is shit" without at least listening to it whether you understand how it was made or not, the same way you can't truly appreciate any particular philosophy without engaging with its actual texts.

If you're claiming to know a lot about philosophy but don't read it, its like claiming you're a HUGE fan of some band but can only name two songs they have done that you have heard.

EDIT also music is art, it's really not even comparable to philosophy in the first place. Philosophy is the pursuit orf truth and knowledge.

What? What the fuck? Toybox, the ideas that philosophers have already elaborated on are philosophy's musical theory equivalent. What you do is the equivalent to banging on drums with no idea what you're trying to accomplish because you haven't done the prior learning. Sometimes it sounds right, but it's due to coincidence, not knowledge.

Though these days, I actually do have a small amount of good friends who are part of the kink community, so this is actually the most relatable of my weird things, amusingly.

Audio dramas are probably the most annoying of these, because they're an entire huge sweeping form of fiction media, with dozens of different unrelated series that are amazing, and I just wanna discuss them like I'd discuss a TV show! But I can't, with any of them! Except maaaybe Nightvale, as that's one that hit mainstream popularity to a degree.

you know what? i agree with toybox here. talking about philosophers is separate from talking about philosophy. talking about philosophy should ideally be about ideas and notions, and simply using previous writers as a base from which to build your own theories.

there's too much fetishization of older ideas in talk about philosophy rather than actually coming up with new ideas, it's why i hate talking about philosophy with people online. it basically just becomes "oh i've read more than you so i know more" rather than an actual discussion of concepts and ideas. it essentially becomes a way for pseudo-intellectuals to jerk off and shut out any outsider opinions because they haven't memorized an expanded universe more convoluted than anything marvel could put out.

I think there is a different between being a fan of something and an authority, though. There are a lot of Journey or Led Zeppelin fans only because of that one song each band is respectively known for.

"Casuals" may feel the same intense enthusiasm about one element as "diehards" do for all elements in the domain of all things Led Zeppelin or Journey, or anything else, really. We can't take that enthusiasm away from casuals, even if it is a bit disappointing and embarrassing to observe them.

on the topic at hand, i love the occult, houseki no kuni, anthropology(i mention this because talking about anthropology on the internet usually devolves into racism every time i've tried to talk about it), houseki no kuni, currently written weird/lovecraftian fiction(seriously people, there's a ton of good shit that's come out in the last 5 years), indie tabletop rpgs, animals, poetry, natural and human history. oh also art and culinary techniques, annnd like...there's some other stuff but i get really vapid about those topics so i'm sorta quiet about them. mythology and comparative religion is like...the one i'm the least vapid on tbh.
*edit*
i don't think people know how much i like houseki no kuni, better mention that again just to make it clear.

yeah i put anthropology and history as separate things, but that's because one can include history but it isn't a comprehensive view of the history. also history is partially all about knowing the biases of the source that collected the accounts and their data collection methods.
*edit 2: electric boogaloo*
i realize that anthropology has a lot of those same qualites at a scholastic level, but that's simply a part of all sciences at a collegiate level. part of discussing history on a casual level is comparing work by historians(ideally), whereas a casual discussion of anthropology will usually revolve around culture and the spread thereof rather than sources. that comes when extraordinary claims are made.

camus is like...the least edgy sorta nihilist? he has a whole thing on why you shouldn't kill yourself. the myth of sisyphus is a weirdly life affirming book. his fiction is edgy, but it all illustrates points about his philosophy rather than his philosophy itself.

also one of his quotes says he only recognized one duty and that was to love, is that really a quote from an edgy man? i mean, sure anton levay said something similar, but that man was trying to make his edgy philosophy look appealing to dumb new agers.

it's weird actually, you seem to attract it more than most people on this chan. it's not like you're the only one that makes sweeping statements...

if i was an sjw i'd say it was sexism, but it's not that. at least not entirely. i dunno though, maybe there's history i'm missing, also i don't want to just baselessly say stuff like that when people might have other reasons. also this is the internet and misrepresenting claims is sorta a hobby for some people. it's why i dislike talking about philosophy, and talking about stuff with any weight. there's nothing worse than someone strawmanning you, though i'll freely admit i've done it myself at time. intellectual dishonesty is sneaky like that.

See, it's already happening.

I never said that people debate me to irritate me. That's not the problem. If people disagree with me, that is fine. I don't have an issue with that. What pisses me off is when people act like I am saying or implying something I simply never said.

To go back to the moving goalposts thing. I never do this. What happens is that I will clearly state "This is where the goalpost is." Then people will make their kick, and when they fall short like 7 yards they go, "You said the goalpost was here! Not over there!" I don't move anything. People just make incorrect assumptions and when I correct them they claim I am changing my story.

>the constant use to support bigotry rather than undermining it is frustrating
right? like, when people talk about there being no precedent for trans people in ancient times or "there's always been fixed concepts about what gender is", they ignore the wealth of non-european examples. or like...just the whole "africans didn't do shit" meme, which is a rather odious and malignant lie that lots of well meaning people parrot because no one talks about the wealth of cultures in a whole continent.

also like...i dunno, i hate how people will just use old as fuck anthropology texts when defending racist arguments when an updated ethnography that's actually peer reviewed says otherwise. i mean, at that point the anti-intellectuals jump out of the woodwork and just claim "liberal colleges are pushing a bias" when they have no clue what "peer reviewed" actually means. or they have an anecdotal story about one peer review process and that's enough of an excuse for them to act like dark age christians, while they turn around and accuse "liberals" of censoring knowledge and "placing feelings over facts". i've also just been on places where intellectual honesty is in the toilet, so maybe that's somewhat influenced my experience of people talking about this online.
>A couple of days ago I, for the first time ever, found a werewolf story where the pack alphas were parents, not just the most aggressive
color me impressed, i've rarely seen that done. i hate that meme so much, because lot's of people either wanna glaze over the fact that alphas being the most aggressive only shows up in captivity, or they'll say that the later studies are influenced by an sjw mindset rather than actually reading said studies.

sure some of that might be people shitposting, but that's exactly the sort of mindset that those sorts of people criticize "the left" of having, it's putting beliefs and opinions before scientific data. i really should stop going on 4chan, the intellectual dishonesty is frankly disgusting.

i'm sorry for making this political, but the environment i find myself in is the sort of place where intellectually dishonest people run rampant, and they so often turn a simple and fact based discussion into "i have some infograph and memes that prove my point, let's make this about politics". it's deeply tiring, especially when i literally have no other places to discuss such things.

sorry for the rant...

I'm not really upset about it. It's just frustrating.

It's like every time I try to get involved in a conversation about something I just get a pat on the head and basically told, "Shush, the adults are talking."

It gets grating after a while.

Again, I don't really blame you, it's just something I've dealt with for a very very long time and trying to get my voice heard at all on nearly any topic is like pulling teeth because 9 times out of 10 the only response I get is basically, "Oh look. Toybox thinks she's smart. That's adorable."

I literally never leave the house without a begleri, they're the perfect everyday carry item - they're absurdly tiny, they tie on to literally anything so you can carry one even without pockets, they can be fidgeted with in tons of ways, you can show off with tricks, and best of all, they're incredibly personal works of art - you can make or commission one that is entirely unique, and it's really special, imo. You can make one out of bone as a moment mori, you can use the zipper pulls of a treasured old jacket, literally anything.

This is my main one.
>pic
It's a personalized-to-me, one of a kind variant on an ao2 model, pure aluminum because I sling light, with the orb design segmented into four pieces so that it's more fun to fidget with.

If you're buying one for a friend, I'd highly recommend an Aroundsquare set - they're well made, aesthetically appealing, and they come with spare strings and an info card on what begleri is.
https://www.aroundsquare.com/shop/titan-al-sport-aluminum-blue-red-kdmgh
This, for example, is an old model being phased out, so it's clearance-cheap, but it's a really solid beginner design. I have one myself, I should really restring it and use it again some time. Very, very smooth to sling.

People keep saying I should try Spirit Island! I'll have to at some point. Right now, my current cooperative game obsession is Burgle Bros - we're thinking about getting the wooden tower accessory for it, that makes the game 3D! That would be amazing.
Also playing lots of Onitama and Avignon because I'm on an abstract kick recently.

I took bit of a break from the sex positive community recently, while I figured some crap out, and I've just recently been getting back into it - it's been super fun all over again! During that hiatus, I like, grew breasts and stuff, etc, so it's been enjoyable exploring a very new body.

I love Myths and Legends! Have you tried Lore? It does the same thing as M&L, basically, but with small, often spooky stories in folklore, like ghost sightings and the careers of serial killers.
As for actual audio dramas... I couldn't even begin to list my favorites. I have too many.

I'm surprised you feel that way based on conversations iv read on here.

No, actually you're one of the few people I talk to that respects what I have to say and doesn't just dismiss it as me being 'uninformed', or accuse me of saying things I don't say, which is why I like talking to you.

It's weird, I've always considered you one of the most together and knowledgeable people on the site. I literally don't answer your posts because I feel like you're out of my intellectual league, sometimes.
That said, I'm an idiot.

Well, I've grown up basically believing I'm not as good as anyone else. That's kind of what was drilled into me by everyone I met other than my parents. So I've always had to try extra hard just to be on the same level as other people. So I've lived in a state of where if I'm not the smartest or the most together I feel like I'm just a waste of a person. Even when I play games online I am highly competitive but not because I'm trying to prove I'm better than everyone else. If I don't get that gold in every category I feel like I'm just wasting everyone's time.

I've always felt that I had to be 5 times better at things than most other people just to validate them wasting their time with me.

I think some people may misinterpret that as me having an ego or claiming that I'm better than others, but its more that if someone says I'm stupid or uninformed or if I make a mistake and it's pointed out it basically feels like getting kicked to the bottom of a really deep pit that I have to climb back out of just to get back to being in the same level as everyone else.

I've never tried to be better than anybody. Anything I do is just to prove that I'm not a complete waste of a human being.

I remember you being interesting and coming across as a little distant but thoughtful. I don't know how anyone would read that as unintelligent?

Also, I forgot to reply to >>42061703 ! My bad. Sorry to hear you're aromantic in the current climate: that must be rough. If it helps, I think that feeling of snug happiness, the type you can get from just a nice meal and a pleasant evening in, is better than love since it's a whole lot more attainable and reliable, plus you don't need to depend on anyone else for it.

>>42061819
No worries about the politics, I practically froth at the mouth when people start to cherry-pick the animal kingdom for their gender norms.
>"Men like to have a big harem of women, like lions!"
>"Do they also do all the babysitting whilst the women are out hunting?"
>"No, women did nothing but babysitting before WW2."
Just like no one bothered travelling after some humans left Africa the first time: who cares that the Romans had a multicultural army (including female mercenaries), or that King Arthur's Sir Morien was a black person, or that Viking traders took an Indian Buddha statue to Sweden? The idea that different ethnicities were mixing willingly before the 1960s is clearly just SJW idealism. Heh...

People who refuse to hear about cross-cultural and historical studies aren't just frustrating to talk to, they're also really missing out.

I've been researching begleri today! I think I want a paracord one for the gift because they're quiet... Postage really puts the cost up though! Maybe UK sellers are using one of their other names...

Thank you! Sadly, Brexit's nearly halved the effectiveness of the pound against the dollar though, so those prices look pretty steep now. Still, I will bookmark it!

Onitama's good, but I've not tried Avignon.

I tried it but couldn't get into it... Maybe I just picked a bad starter ep? Myths and Legends grabbed me much faster.

that is hard but i will tell you a tale of owl bear mask 5 and how him and a other PC character called surreal become deep lovers

so we were hired to deliver a box to neverwinter (this changed to the underdark at the end but the game had gone on so long we kind of all forget that) the party started off with 2 monks and a fighter escorting a cart but after a amazing stop at a tavern that involved a hot elf and a killer orc cook we had to move on, we picked up a other PC who was a female rouge and continued on, while we were escorting the cart we were attacked by a owl bear, we all jump into battle and my lv 2 character got a good hit on the beast, but then the DM rolled a nat 20 on one of his multiattacks and BAM my monk boi was DED, and so i made a new character called owl bear mask 5 (based on tiger mask), he was a 5'11 half orc who had a nat 12 in manhood.

so at one point the driver was kidnapped and we were tasked to find him, we tracked him down to a shady gambling town where two casinos were looming over, one had a blue dragon on it's roof and the other a beholder, me and surreal went into the dragon one and our now bard/monk went to the beholder, after wrestling match with a yeti me and surreal were called up to the bosses room but before i arrived someone had charmed me to attack the boss.

surreal had made it to the roof where she would see a giant round table with several kobolds sitting around the suits waiting for the boss to return, but then the roof of this casino opened up and a young blue dragon flew in, i was then taken up and seen the boss and the charm had kicked in, i was to kill the boss but i had managed to break the charm, only after getting onto his back. i jumped off and was standing next to surreal as the dragon was mad that i had attacked him so now the fight was on, the dragon went first and fucking almost knocked me to zero with his lighting breath, at this moment me and surreal ran for the stairs but the dragon breath attacked again, taking out the roof the his own casino and hitting me down to 1 health and surreal down to 2, we thought we were going to die so we made a fianl stand against the beast, we walked back up the stairs and faced the dragon and i had surreal take off my mask {oh yeah i had a owl bear mask that i never took off until now) and then we kissed and waited for the dragon to finish us off, he dived at as with the speed to crush us to dust, the DM rolled and got a nat 1, the dragon crashed into his own casino and got stuck. we didn't have any mercy on this dragon once he got stuck, we both went down and began our attack, surreal did the real damage but i stuck a good blow by breaking one of the dragons wings, stopping it from flying and in one final hit surreal and OBM5 killed a dragon

So i was dming the open for D&D season 8. And the party was outside an abandoned mansion full of cultists. One of them fails her stealth roll, and ends up killing 2 cultists that came up behind her. When she turned around , the other cultists were behind her having a wine tasting party. They saw that two of their members had been killed, and immediately called the guards over. The only reason that she did not go to jail was her excuse "I needed somewhere to pee, and these two came out of nowhere and started attacking me. So i killed them out of self defence."

Another gem is that same party kept on getting caught by guards for other failed stealth rolls. On the first ocaduon, they were trying to stealth over a wall, through a presdltadigitsted bush. It was going smothly, until one of them failed a dc15 stealth check. See, before they set off, the town's police were alerted to shenanigans happening in the aresla. So they were on high alert. The
one that found them was not amused. The guy that was on watch quickly explained to the constible "I am ever so sorry, this is my retarded cousin. She is really into walls, and she can help herself I'm afraid. Please excuse her." Their charisma roll was so good, that the constble just shook his head and said "Keep her under control."

But the absolute gem of that weekend was when the group from the necromancer. He was pretty bad ass for a shock encounter. His party consisted of 10 zombies, a wraith, and himself. The party was strugling to beat him, and wqsrunning out of time to complete the encounter, so the spellcaster had a brilliant idea. She turned to the zombies, and cast fear. 4 of them faild so hard that the literally sprinted out of combat while screaming "RUN AWAY!" All monty python esc.
