Training for a small triathlon (negligently i'm soo gonna suffer!) and shooting ponies!

Oh wait thats still shooting. Also love mountaineering skiing and river rafting, never get to do those, and soon rowing a dinghy around in the SF Bay and probably this brackish city lake, as my abs training for mixed martial arts.

honestly i dont like outdoor activities that much such as camping and stuff like that

however, i do like to walk on the beach and stuff like that. you hardly will see me doing it during the spring/summer because of the unbearable heat

during the winter i am out there more frequently and sometimes researching general flora

the /out/doors in general isn't my thing for the most part but i will sometimes make exceptions depending on the weather

i dunno, i might go out and watch the fireworks at the beach but i dont feel like being eaten alive by mosquitoes...

I'm not a fan of physically strenuous activities. the closest I come to outdoor activities is simply taking walks uptown to get coffee or snacks or whatever.

"tri for fun" is supposed to be this month and my buddy pushing me to sign up, but it's again in August and I've barely run at all, slacking. Still need to build the 4-gear fixie too, if I go this point I'd have to take the multigear and yuck I hate freewheels so I'm probly gonna tell my buddy to stuff it, I'm doing august.

Cross country?? I Looooove mountaineering backcountry, haven't done it in soooo long....get into the pristine fluffy powder and trees and no one around...just the best.

i love trail running, there's a state park right near where i live so i can usually safely run, unless the cops are forcing homeless campers out. that's happened more lately, so for now most of my /out/door activities have been gardening. every once in a while, i try to do a trail-run 5k though, just to keep in some sorta shape.

right now my roommates and i have a crop of potatoes, strawberries and cat-nip, though we're working on making some raised beds to start planting melons and some other stuff no one's agreed to yet.

i wanna do a really good hike of mount rainier soon, like taking the wonderland trail all the way around the mountain.

Trail running always sounds like fun, im not built to run though haha. Sometimes i can get going down hill though.

My strawberry bushes havent made any strawberrys yet :/ been about 3 years, i might rip them out and replace them.

Mount rainier is yuge! Is that a day trip or plan on doing an overnight? 9/10 times when i summit a mountain its foggy as hell and i get no view haha.

I thought of that too, running both with one as pre-run but, we'll see. I gotta miss work to go anyway, it might just not be feasible to do it that way. As it is my buddy hasn't gotten back to me with the deadline to register anyway so we may have already screwed it off, I dunno.

>My strawberry bushes havent made any strawberrys yet :/ been about 3 years, i might rip them out and replace them

that's weird, is the soil you planted it in just not nutritious enough? our strawberries are sorta...for their first year the berries are sorta petite, but we've been getting them. also we have a diy irrigation system that keeps them mostly damp, so that might also have something to do with it.

also what sorta light does your bush get? that deviled one of our poor little guys for a while, but then we got him into partial shade and he's happy as can be. that plant is also one of those weird pineapple strawberries, so...it's sorta this surreal outlier. i wish i had more tips for you, but i'm really new to this whole strawberry thing.

>Is that a day trip or plan on doing an overnight?

i plan on camping out and stuff. the trail i wanna hike is 90 some odd miles, but it's all around the mountain rather than going up on top of it. you need climbing gear for that and i'm not so confident to do that yet. i'm an abysmal rock climber.
>9/10 times when i summit a mountain its foggy as hell and i get no view haha
aha, yeah i know that feel. lots of little "mountains" around here are like that. tiger mountain, a local mountain is sorta like that for me. everytime i've climbed it, it's always on an overcast day and i'm stuck looking at the cloud cover of the surrounding area.

it's good for observing weather patterns, but kinda dull if meteorology isn't your thing. i mean, i love it but that's because it's a major force that effects the local ecosystem.

About 75/25 sun shade id say, soil is moist, they are on the banks of the river. They were there when i bought the house so maybe they are old and just not producing i read that can happen.

90mi is a haul, def not a day trip! Probably a great hike though.

I like meteorology. Mostly like to photograph it, i know enough to get an idea of what im looking at and to set up in the right area, but im no expert.

I dont mind when its cloudy at a summit, still get a good feeling of accomplishment and like you said, the cloud cover can be interesting in of itself.

I wish I could get >>>/out/ more. Used to be I'd walk around regional parks or go to the beach but I haven't been able to the last year or two. Laguna beach is a beautiful place and its nice to enjoy the sun and surf. Also my skin feels so damn good after a few waves of that salty water, its the best exfoliant and best way to clear your sinuses.

I do keep up plants, mostly herbs so I don't need to buy rosemary or thyme when I'm cooking (I'm trying to git gud at that too).

Not a fan of camping at all, but mostly because of a bad experience when I was 12.

the thing I miss most about california is the abundance of parks. real deal 10sq miles and up parks. where I am now in texas parks are a joke - it’s all road with a tiny strip of wilderness around it, and a parking lot. on the other hand, land itself is cheap(er) here so it’s feasible to buy yourself your own park

Well, pretty much everything on that list. I grew up camping, i love to paddle, so much so i bought a house a bit outside my budget just because it was on a river haha. i just got back from a canoe paddle threw the ozarks i saved all year for and im trying to figure out my work situation to do the AT in just 2 segments. I have a mtn bike that doubles as a road bike (which honestly is ruining it, not geared at all correctly) big into gardening. I was suppose to have had a bee colony and ducks by now but life got in the way and i ended up having to spend that money on home maintenance and now its too late in the year to start. I try to spend as much time in the woods as i can, which im kinda obligated to do to keep my dog happy and heathy.

Big into photography, especially weather and wildlife.

Also, im sorry, but i HAVE to borrow glim glam here, for just one quick, super quick second...total respect for the wiafu status, but there is no other option.

... I like kites.

I got into stunt kites when i was a kid after a few model rocket and airplane mishaps got me prohibited. I use to build them and i live by the ocean with perfect conditions for em. Its been a few years since iv had a good one though, that needs to change. I wanna try my hand at a box, but they have always seemed harder. My friends get annoyed because whenever they ask what should we do i say "go fly kites!" ... Only got them to do it once.

Also... I lost my g'damn mind when she said that in the show haha. One of my irl pony friends was like "dude did you see!?" (Idk if he said it exactly like that, but thats how i remeber it haha) and i was like "KITES!"

Though, model rocketry id love to get back into. Id also really like to try building an ultra light aircraft. I have a little 1.3l motor kicking around and i found someone that makes reduction gears for a propeller specifically for it, but im in no finacial situation to be building planes atm haha. Aviation in general has always fascinated me.

Between all that, i really like sleeping, esp in a hammock.

Thanks for asking ^_^

I DID go look at a paraglider (basicly a parachute and a motor strapped to your back haha) someone was selling on Craigslist but it was pretty messed up so i passed.

I wish they still made wind surf boards. I know a guy who is a college prof. that i met at a shooting range that was wayyy into wind surfing and said he could hook me up with someone who builds them, but i lost his contact info :/
I built a little sail/row boat when i was a kid and that was fun.

Maybe its wind i like... Haha

yeah you do need a good place to do it, preferrably with consistent winds. I took a lesson once and really enjoyed it

I guess its because of the range of stuff you can do.

Can kayak a long river and do overnights. Can kayak a fast river and hit some good rapids for adrenaline. Can kayak a lazy river and just float with a beer. Can kayak a lake and fish or just observe nature, same with the ocean.

Its like having a cross between an atv a street bike and a hammock haha. Its where most of my other interests intersect.

Low initial investment and next to nothing for maintenance costs.

Its just where i always end up.

Saddest day of my life was when someone stole my oldtown vapor 12' kayak. Was a perfect all around kayak and was like the "Cadillac" of yaks haha. I saved up and got a vapor 10' last year because they dont really make the 12' anymore (i think just as a specialty fishing boat) and im happy with it but i miss that 12'er haha.

there’s a pond not far from me and the geese + ducks there are very aggressive. they do this thing where they patrol in groups of 3 - geese and different species of duck together, and they’ll attack if you get too close to their territory. I did when I was a kid. My dad had a 26' columbia that we would be out on every weekend. Forced to be out on that is... Between that and the yelling and the seasickness it put a bad taste in my mouth of it. Buuuut if you take all that away i really rather enjoy it. Sometimes i think about getting a sunfish, opti, or a 420 laser, just a little 1-2 person sailer, but i have nowhere to keep it. I had plans with a friend to fabricate a little cross member to make our kayaks into a catamaran, but my kayak got stolen and he moved away so it never happened.

Have you ever sailed?

Omigosh i love sailing. When i spent a week at a tourist resort in Panama with a Colombian lady, i did so well on the kayaking and scuba diving that they really expected me to catch on with like, no instruction. The wind and current were both going away from the shore and of the three Sunfish out, only one managed to close-haul their way too close to the wind and were slowly making progress. The other was locked in irons getting dragged very slowly out to sea and i got sucked way, way out trying repeatedly to learn how to tack. We were supposed to stay within the first buoy and three had disappeared out of sight towards the shore and the resort was a speck on the beach before i finally got a tack going. The whole time we were laughing about whether there really was going to be a rescue by their waverunners as promised or not. By the time i figured out how to sail we'd have been coming back to shore on a broad reach for hours so when the wave runner finally showed up we accepted the tow and the resort staff razzed me for days about having to be rescued.

God Dam but i love sailing.

Huh, they look pretty weird, but I guess it makes sense, considering its uses.
A big issue was that our house is the highest point, elevation-wise of the path I took today, and you definitely don't want to have to go against that on the last quarter of the ride. Going the other way would (hopefully) be less difficult. Also it might be cheating, but I'll probably just take the bus back. I'm sore as fuck, and I'd prefer to not feel like shit for the rest of the day.

Haha i can imagine you just turning into a little dot on the horizon. Tacking is definitely the hardest thing to get, but its also the interesting part, that you cut the wind to move forward into it. (Or across it i guess). Basicly your making an airfoil like a wing on a plane but instead of lift you're getting propulsion. Thats pretty neat.
Also diving is something id really like to get into more. Closest thing to going to an alien world haha.
>>42050920
>I'm sorry you were forced to..
Haha well... Its not like sad violin music was playing and there was a cold filter over the lens or nothing, but i was a kid and i wanted to be with my friends more than on a boat that made me terribly ill.

It wasnt all bad though, there were times we would throw out the genny or spinnaker, get the boat healing over really good so we were basicly standing on the inner hull, trying to get as much speed as we can. Very exciting. But usually it was more of a wine and cheese cruse on just the jib, which is where my motion sickness would kick in haha.
(I might be getting the sail terms mixed up)
Thats awesome you sail though! Do you still?
>I once had plans to sail across oceans .. but that is long gone now.
From growing up around marinas, Iv met a bunch of people who do that. Mostly retired folks who live on their boats, but some just pure-bred adventure seekers. Why long gone?
>>42050922
Ah, i gotcha. There is a bike path running behind my house and its the same way, i almost always end up starting by going up hill so that the ride back is basicly just a coast. Its a reall small incline but enough to be annoying after a few miles.
>I'll probably just take the bus back.
Thats a really good idea tbh. The downhill portion i just mentioned goes into the city, and i always want to bike down and go to a restaurant or a tavern or something, but almost never do because of the ride back... Im stealing that idea ^_^

If you pack that up and take it down a nature trail at the local park to add to the atmosphere of the game, that totally counts as /out/. Don't forget candles and chem lights! You gotta try to time it just right to transition from day to dusk along with the campaign (if it mentions it).

there’s many risky things I want to try but diving with a tank of air and a mask is 100% not one of them

there is so much that can go wrong, and then you’re trapped underwater. if you don’t drown outright you’ve got rapid depressurization injuries to deal with

and for what - to see some fish?? the only way I’m getting in a scuba suit is if I know there’s a shipwreck full of gold down there

and I’m a decent swimmer too

definitely would like to do sailing one day though, being on a boat when the waves are high is very fun.

The bends. When i was training for my Cardiac license we had to learn about rapid decompression sickness and the best routes from the most popular dive spots to the 1 hospital in the area with a decompression chamber.

Yeah, a bit of a turn off for sure haha.

But i guess thats why you need a license to dive. I still wanna do it because i have hand me down tanks and lobsters are like... Amazingly tasty.

You can't get the bends diving in less than 20 feet of water, and there is a whole lot to see at that depth and you can bail for the surface safely from that depth.

When I dove in Panama we didn't drop deep enough to worry about it and it was super fun.

I think the licensing burden is amazingly over-expensive and just fucking stupid. It's like $600 and a bunch of diligence for the same thing I learned in 20 minutes in a 4 foot deep wading pool at the tourist resort. I am a little pissed that it's been made a rich person sport for no damn good reason.

Yeah if you stay in the shallows its not really a big deal.

>I think the licensing burden is amazingly over-expensive and just fucking stupid.

I have to disagree with you there. Most people will inevitably end up diving on there own and need to learn how do deal with emergency situations. There is a world of difference between diving at a resort and diving on your own. You need to know stuff like how to set your flags correctly for passing boats, how to read you depth guages and what to do if you run out of air. Iv taken the classes and its def worth it and nessisarry imo esp considering how many cases of decompression sickness and S&R missions iv witnessed for even licensed divers.

I'm just bitter it's like $600 just to get started which I think is pretty excessive. There's no way that what I really need to know should cost that much.

Fantastic, im getting a reputation... :P
Im still waiting for someone to say "would you pick a damn pony to avatar and stick with it!" Haha.

I mean, im willing to go the other way too. No licenses required but you fit the bill for EMS and coast guard to haul you out of danger haha.

$600 does seem a bit high though. Classes around here im seeing for $450ish, but that pays for the use of tanks and regulaters, gauges everything you need, plus the maintenance on the 30' or so in ground pool they use. Also get some good discounts at the dive shop for taking the course.

Maybe shop around a little more, you might find a better deal.

but muh free drowning

when I have even enuf money to think about shopping for equipment I'll shop around but by then we'll probly be using Chinese or Russian currency around here no?

getting my rowboat in the water is next goal I suppose, nothing wrong with a little snorkeling if I want to get wet. I'm in deep-water withdrawals right now, my gym's lanes are like 4 feet deep. I liked to begin swim class by jumping in the 12 foot deep end and swimming across the bottom of the Olympic sized pool. Plenty deep enough to require a Coast Guard body retrieval when I float to the surface after bloating up or something I suppose.

Would you pick a pony for your avatar and post any many ponies as you like so long as they are ponies.

I mean... Its only illegal if you get caught right? Strap up and go diving i say. Cant be more than a fine.

Yeah the equipment is expensive as hell, i was lucky to get some free tanks and a regulator. But honestly snorkeling is really fun too.

Thats really more of a question for the boys in the lab, but i dont see why not.

I get that. Problem is, for me, being underway on a boat that size slow and easy makes me so incredibly motion sick that i ether hang off the side praying to spew or below deck pushing my head into the cushions and closing my eyes as hard as i can just sweating. I look at cruse ships like they are tourture chambers haha.

Its why i wont fly unless absolutely positively nessisarry.

Im really feeling sick just thinking about it.

>I've always felt sails over motors give such a greater sense of freedom.

I agree! I love human/natural propulsion. Its simple, keeps you healthy, and quiet. The golden egg is still to make human powered flight a practical reality.

Yup! The thing of it its, the less I can perceive the movement, the sicker it makes me. So the bigger the boat, or plane, the worse it gets. If im in control of it though, im fine. Same with a car, i love driving and will do it happily for hours on end, but if im a passenger on a long highway trip it wrecks me.

Id def go on a hurricane cruse though ^_^

I used to ride my motorbike as my only means of transport for like three years before I moved to texas. I took it apart to do a general tuneup + fix a gasket that was leaking oil and putting it back together has been going very very slow.

I've done more serious repairs on it before too, it's just that I don't have a pressing need to have it right now, so I've been putting it off.

this is what it looked like when it was almost new

Also i love duel sports! I want a KLR650 sooo bad, but i had a choice, do or bike... I chose dog. Which kinda works out because my plan to get over the emotional nightmare of when she dies it to go Xcountry on a bike.

what kind of dog do you have?

I’ve only had cats mainly because they’re so low maintenance. they poop in their box and you just scoop if out. if I had a dog I’d have to pick up their poop on walks. just not ready for that kind of commitment.

my holy grail for bike trips is east and south coast australia. mild climate, continuous sandy beaches. all sorts of venomous creatures. ride a few hours a day, set up camp and just sit there absorbing your surroundings. one day!
