Are there any words that you pronounced and/or spelled wrong for a very long time, despite knowing what they meant?

I used to think that "paralysis" was pronounced "pair-uh-lie-sis".

Epic Mount!Hero.tYu2g 42002195

I have never mispronounced it, but only a few years back I found out it didn't mean "a group or set of seven".

Like the word "dozen", I thought several ment seven things in particular. But turns out several means an unspecific number of things, more than one but not many.

I pronounced pleb pleeb, and thot like tot (as in tater tot). I also did the whole meemee thing back in 07. It's actually a joke amongst my friends with how bad I am at pronouncing meme words.

Zeke Roa 42002350

I used to pronounce meme mehmay

>I pronounced pleb pleeb
Oh yeah, I just remembered this. Because I thought plebeian was spelled plebian, and that the stress was on the first syllable instead of the second.

i pronounce "nihilist" as "nee-hilist" rather than "nigh-hilist".

Russian author/composer/chess player names of all kinds. For example: Turgenev, which I originally pronounced tur'guh-nev, is actually more like tur-gen'yev.

This one is a classic. Though, I'm the reverse of you: I pronounced it the latter way initially and was corrected to the former.

Noonim 42002587

Yes. STill do. I pronounce everything exactly as it is spelt. I refuse to pronounce anything in any other way.
"Bass" is still bass, to me, not base. There's no fucking E, you crazy bunch of stickmongers

You're going to have a rough time in the world of English.

Noonim 42002593

I already do, but guess what?
I spell like a champion.

It just happens all the time. Such is life when you read more than you get to fucking talk to people.

It's weird how you need a really good grasp of Ancient Greek and Latin just to pronounce a good deal of English words.

Russian and loaning from it is always a hassle.
What triggers me the most is all those names changing the distinctly reliable ё to e instead of stressed yo.

I will never watch that episode the same way.
