I finally made good on my winter project.

Changed out my old convertible top as the old was 15 years old. It took me like 4 days due to inclement weather and I had to work through a manufacturing defect on the new top I bought, but it came out pretty good.

This is what it looks like with no top on, the interior headliner does not need to be removed.

Have you completed your winter projects? Anyone else work on cars?

Yeah I just dropped 1k to fix my car. The exhaust, brake pads and a bunch of other shat was broken. Was sooo awesome

I had a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo at work today whose security system was preventing it from starting. After the usual tricks failed I broke down and read the manual to discover that I had to manually lock and unlock the doors and rear hatch to reset it so that it would start and run properly.

Most of the assembly is with lots of elastic straps and fitted moldings but the rear must be secured to a tac-bar with staples.

I've had a few winter projects, but in the vein of this thread, my motorcycle has been mine.
I cleaned up the motor and sorted out some of the electrical, and today i fitted a luggage rack for the rear which im pretty happy with, though, i need to drill the fender to secure it.

Its been single digit cold, and so, i haven't wanted to be in my garage all that much, and i don't want to spend the money to run heaters right now. A lot of what i need to do has to do with painting, and so i need warmer weather so that everything will cure correctly, also, i need to still register it. Being able to ride it will give me a lot of incentive to keep going with it, i have a DMV appt the first week of march.

Changing a convertable top is no small feat, it looks great. What do you have left to do?

Wanted to put new intake in, fix suspension, put new exhaust in, put short shifter in, refurbish seats, new radio, fix peeling paint, fix rust.

Ehh no. I have a family friend that fixes things for me cheap if I buy all the parts. Always give him extra though because I’m nice and he deserves it
Only thing I did myself was fix my oil and refill my windshield liquid
Which reminds me. I have a slight crack forming in it

I've always seen Jeep Grand Cherokees blowing transmissions and having weird electrical problems.
Your fix seems pretty odd, but I've seen vehicles straight up not work because of a faulty keyfob.
>>490360
Oh yeah, I saw that you got a motorcycle project. Very cool. I was meaning to ask you about it.
Is it running at least? What more does it need?
Its hard to work through the blistering cold, but I only had access to a carport, I'd love to have a garage to do this.
It's not easy, but all I have to do is put the roll bar and interior panels back, and I have to go track down some plastic push clips because some of the old ones were so brittle they broke when I pulled them out.
>>490361
That's quite a list. Are you planning on changing whole struts? Loud obnoxious exhaust?
Whats your plan for peeling paint? I need to touch up mine in places too.
>>490362
It's good to know a mechanic, as most places overcharge too much for any work really.
I've never replaced a windshield before, but I've seen it done, and I'd personally want it done professionally.

>Is it running at least? What more does it need?
Yes, mechanically its pretty sound. I wouldnt have bought it otherwise, because there are defiantly more mature ways i could have spent 1000 dollars at this juncture in my life haha. Mostly it needs cosmetics, like the seat is ripped up and needs to be reupholstered, and the guy i bought it from wanted to make it a cafe racer type thing, so he did things like paint the motor and de-badge it, so i need to undo that stuff because i want it original and he did kind of a half assed job of it. There is a short in the electrical that he insisted made it unridable, but, i rode it 30mi home and didnt have an issue, and i had no issue on the test ride, even though he did, but he cranked the handlebars when he wanted to turn, like steering a car, and i think that was just putting stress on the harness. So, i plan to redo the electrical and modernize it, but its not as bad as he advertised it as being if you just ride it gently.
The biggest thing i want to do right away is mufflers, because he put these shorty, basically cherry bomb type mufflers on it, and it sounds obnoxious. Its carbureted, so ill be needing to warm it up in the morning before work, which would be horrible for my neighbors at 6am if i leave it as is haha.
All that, plus a basic return to zero on normal preventative maintenance.

> I'd love to have a garage to do this.

Yeah, im spoiled, but i did my time laying in appt parking lots in the pouring rain or blistering sun changing water pumps and alternators haha.

>ll I have to do is put the roll bar and interior panels back, and I have to go track down some plastic push clips because some of the old ones were so brittle they broke when I pulled them out.

Those things are such trash haha. I normally just buy them in advance because i tend to just rip them out rather than doing it right haha.
It looks fitted really well, have you dont a leak test yet? I've always been terrified to attempt to do a convertible top myself, so props to you.

No. Got MagnaFlow with new Cats. Should be low rumble at most. Only getting new because old one has a hole in it somewhere.

Seems like a good backstory for a project, and its much more fun restoring a vehicle cosmetically then mechanically.
I got my car cheap for the similar reasons, questionable work done and poor upholstery, but it's not a lost cause if you can restore it.
Good luck with that electrical though, troubleshooting that could be difficult. I doubt you'd find an old motorcycle like yours to find parts from. Is there somewhere you can buy a new seat?
Do those mufflers make it sound like a Harley or actual obnoxious?
I guess since you are going for original you want something more modest.
>but i did my time laying in appt parking lots
This is how we do it in America.

I did my best to plan ahead, and I went to the junkyard and pulled extra screws and clips just in case, but those broke too.
I haven't tested it yet, as some of the broken push pins are for the weather strips, so I'm afraid to check first. I also want to keep it ice free until I can get it in the sun so the fabric will tighten up some more.

Neglect is a terrible thing. My rear suspension jounce's were smashed to the bone.

>its much more fun restoring a vehicle cosmetically then mechanically.
Yeah, for sure. Though, i do plan to do an entire rebuild of the motor, its nice that i can plan it. I will probably want to have another bike before i do that though, and retire this one to more "hey check out my classic motorcycle" duties.
>Good luck with that electrical though, troubleshooting that could be difficult. I doubt you'd find an old motorcycle like yours to find parts from. Is there somewhere you can buy a new seat?
Yeah, fuck trouble shooting, im going to tear the entire harness out and rewire the entire thing from scratch with a more modern setup. The way i see it, the wires are going on 60 years old, i can trouble shoot it and fix the 1 short, but ill be chasing more soon enough, or, i can just blow it out all at once and maybe get another half century out of them haha.
Honda CBs are pretty ubiquitous bikes, they were produced by the hundreds of thousands, so there is a large after market for them even to this day. You use to be able to just buy a perfect condition 70s and 80s CB at any given moment for less than 1500 bucks, but, they are getting harder to find, esp as the cafe craze keeps building. Thats why i want to keep this one original because the rarer they become, the more it will be worth.
>Do those mufflers make it sound like a Harley or actual obnoxious?
I suppose its in the eye of the beholder. I think most harleys sound obnoxious haha. Its not terrible, but i really want to capture that whole "You meet the nicest people on a honda" aesthetic of the 1970s haha.
There is a lot i could ramble on about regarding Harley vs Honda in the 1970s and 80s and why honda still exists and Harleys best selling products are branded clothing and what amount to essentially high displacement mobility scooters while they circle the drain... but ill spare you haha.
My uncles ride Harleys.

>I did my best to plan ahead, and I went to the junkyard and pulled extra screws and clips just in case, but those broke too.

I really fucking hate those things. Tbh, most of the ones on my focus have been replaced by zip ties where it was possible haha.

>I got my car cheap for the similar reasons, questionable work done and poor upholstery,

Please tell me it was pink leopard skin haha.
>I haven't tested it yet, as some of the broken push pins are for the weather strips, so I'm afraid to check first. I also want to keep it ice free until I can get it in the sun so the fabric will tighten up some more.
Ah, fair enough. Get it all buttoned up first for sure. What is the procedure with that? Like, is parking it in the sun a thing your suppose to do or just a good idea?

Well best of luck to bringing your modernized classic to its pretty self.
How difficult would you say the wiring replacement is?
I think vehicles that have a sense of retro futurism in some form are really cool.
I always saw Harley Davidson claim a little more prestige then probably deserve,
yet a Honda Shadow is just as calendar worthy.

There is now at least one zip tie somewhere in my car now.

No, but the LED gauges were coded pink, and the original back window was poorly sealed with silicone. It was assumed the broken latches and poor top made the car worthless, but the points of contact for the latches were made to be replaced from wear.

Its a good idea when you first install it to leave it in its extended state in the sun for a while so when you lower it, its gets rid of any wrinkles and there wont be any bulging or weird flaps/creases.
Its also not a good idea to leave the top lowered for extended periods of time.

https://suzukicycles.com/street/2019/tu250x
That is in the running for my next one.
I really enjoy this style of bike. I've had super sports and duel sports, but im really enjoying just the classic motorcycle. Its practical, looks fine, and suites many purposes. I never liked cruisers, i dont feel secure with my feet forward. Im glad simple motorcycles are coming back into style.
A lack of fuel injection is my biggest complaint about my current one.

It shouldnt be too hard to rewire, i mean, its a motorcycle. 6 lights, ignition, and starter switch (which i dont even use, it has a kick starter). Everything else is mechanical.
Ill be wanting to switch everything to LED because they run cooler, and with less batt draw, so that in turn means and easier fuse situation and less wires to beging with. All simple circuit.

>There is now at least one zip tie somewhere in my car now.

:3
Zip ties should be as widely regarded as duct tape and WD40 haha. I always have a bundle in my backpack and a pack in my trunk.

Yeah, that makes sense about tightening it up to reduce wrinkles.
I would leave my miatas top down for literal weeks haha, as long as it didnt rain i had no reason to put it up in the summer.
I really miss that car. You could fold the seat forward and sit on the trunk with your back against them and it was like a big couch.

I've always wanted a convertible mustang though, so you have my envy. I almost bought one once but "convertibles are heavyer maaaan, power to weight!" so i didnt. Now i know that enjoyment is the more important thing haha.
I really hope the top works out well for you, it looks like you did a better job than i would have so i dont anticipate any problems. Now lets just pray for mild weather haha.

That does fit the whole 70s honest motorcyclist image.
I always associate those kinds of cycles with riders that have traditional helmets and goggles.
I'd love to own a crazy super sport someday like a Triumph Daytona

Older vehicles are much simpler, I'm just not sure how complex a cycle's assembly could be.
I had idea's of changing out my lights with LED's and getting Saleen rims but I've kind of grown fond of a stock look too. I'm going to leave em as is.
Better hope that ziptie comes through because I am not doing that again.

Its not the end of the world to leave the top down, but it does increase wear a bit.
Miata's are cool, I'd take a new MX-5 as the closest thing to a S2000.

Convertibles are heavierr maaaan. I didn't want to get another one, but I knew how to save this one, and that color was only available for one year. Now I can really enjoy it.
Took some people driving around with the top down during 4th of July with fireworks in the night sky everywhere.
It was a unique experience.

Yes, I've been working at an auto auction for ten years now. This time of year I see 300-400 cars a week. Come midsummer that can rise to over 1000 and not all of them or indeed most of them are in the best condition.

Harley going all in on the out-law cocain cowboy "be scared of me, but really im just an investment banker who does this on the weekend thats how i could afford a $20k motorcycle with 1960s tech" image really nailed their coffin.
They built shit, and when honda came in with their CBs, instead of making better bikes, they just got the government to tax imports on hondas over 750cc to unviable levels. So honda made a 750 that was faster, more comfortable, and way more reliable while Harley kept churning out the chudmobiles. Now harelys base market is dead, and dying, and complaining about any innovation on their way out, which is why their trikes are their best sellers because boomers cant hold those Behemoths up anymore. Their unwillingness to compete, and their alienation of anyone outside the rich wanna be rebel market killed them.

I would like to get a traditional helmet and scarf and goggles tbh haha. Just for the hell of it, but at the same time, im really particular when it comes to function over form, so i dont want to sacrifice safety just for some nostalgia toward something i never experienced haha. Ill stick with my full face and leathers, make a new aesthetic that our grandkids can have unwarranted nostalgia for :P
I think im done with liter bikes tbh, i love them, but they just... idk, its a lot for the road. I think i would like a Yamaha R3 as a supersport, just something to take out into the twisties and to the track.
A Ural or a Royal Enfield bike is also on my list of do-wants. Thats the nice thing about motorcycles, you can reasonably expect to be able to buy the one of your dreams someday, unlike cars that you need house money to buy.
Also, motorcycles give you a reason to be able to say you own gauntlets, and that alone it worth it.

I feel like the stock aesthetic is going to be a thing at some point and we will be the trend setters haha. That ziptie will outlast the rest of the car for sure, and nah, motorcycles are still simple machines which is why i like them. There is only 3ft of wiring, its just a bit more complicated than a christmas tree haha.

If i get another miata, its going to be another NB which was 99-05 because i think thats the best looking one, and it was before it got all bulbus to meet pedestrian safety regulations and to look more "muscle-y and aggressive" haha. That, or i wouldnt mind getting a Fiata because they have that classic styling too.

Convertibles are a huge pain in the ass, and they suck 99% of the time, but that one moment on a crisp fall day, with the top down and the heat going on some old back road... it makes it all worth it haha. You did right by you. Also, i didnt know that about the colour, ford is traditionally blue, im surprised they only offered it for such a limited run.

The original factory top was made out of vinyl canvas, which doesn't retain heat or block outside sound very well.
The new top is made of Twill, which is more fuzzy and thicker than plastic, and retains heat very well.
I would but there's a blizzard out.
>>490633

What's the rarest car you've recently seen?
>>490700
>which is why their trikes are their best sellers because boomers cant hold those Behemoths up anymore
omg,You're making too much sense right now hahaha.
Harley Davidson want to be like Gibson or Mercedes, and be overpriced on name and prestige alone. So I agree with you.
Your target demographic will be the death of you!

When I was younger, there were always squads of SS bike riders that would tear up the Eisenhower, and I always wanted to be apart of that crew more than the fat bois. Having a mustang, I often have people try and race me, or will sometimes bump into Mustang brethren on the highway and we cruise together so we cant all be pulled over.
Is there a culture for that type of motorcycle? I know Miata is a club too. Is that what cafe racers are?
>stock aesthetic is going to be a thing at some point and we will be the trend setters
Car culture has moved away from Need for Speed graphics and bodykits to a much simpler aesthetic, but for those preserved or restored classics, I am confident the best buyers will be searching for stock.
Oh im only worried the zip tie will slip out of place. I tried drilling out a broken screw but it broke my bit, so I said fuck it.
There's not much there, so I'd assume bikes are easy to work on.
What happened to your old Miata? Do you regret selling it?
>Convertibles are a huge pain in the ass, and they suck 99% of the time, but that one moment on a crisp fall day, with the top down and the heat going on some old back road... it makes it all worth it
Yeah, I guess I could agree with that. The thing is when you have a cool toy for so long, you may grow tired of it.
"Oh wow! You have a convertible! So cool! can we put the top down??!"
>sigh
They offer it in baby blue or dark blue for all years, but the 05 is a blue/purple sparkle(Sonic blue), where 06-09 is just Vista blue.

No issue.

Its a shame, because it would be nice to be able to buy an american made motorcycle.

Its weird, bikes tend to pack up. Like, you can start out riding by yourself in the morning, and by the end of the day you are in a group of like 60 just going where ever the collective subconscious decides. Normally towards food haha, its very animistic. Mustangs are the only 4 wheel vehical i could actually see that happening with tbh haha. Miatas did have a wave, jeeps had a wave too, but i dont think there is a wave for specific motorcycles, just all motorcycles wave to each other, normally with your hand down low to not look like you are signaling a turn. Some guys are assholes and dont wave to scooters, but i wave to scooters. Also harley guys tend not to wave to sport bikes.
I try to avoid that situation now a days though, because there is always a squid ready to do 100mph wheelie into a family sedan or some shit. I love motorcycles, but tbh, i hate a lot of motorcyclists.

What is the ziptie holding together?
I totaled the miata. It was a rainy day on a road i had never been on, and a mini van was coming the other way with there high beams on and didnt shut them off even though i was flashing, and the first thing i saw when my vision cleared were 3 >>> arrows and a guard rail.
I was probably going faster than i should have been for the weather conditions, but i was 19 and had a supercharger that i liked hearing spin.

I know exactly what you mean about your cool toy becoming mundane haha. Thats why i like toys that lend themselves to other hobbies. Thats why i like my bike, because its not just a motorcycle, its a pack mule for adventure. I plan do do a xcountry trip with it.

Ohhhhh okay. I keep seeing Sonic Blue duplicolour and always wondered what ford made that colour, and now i know.

I heard once that American corporations focus on short term gains wheres foreign focus on the long term, so the dreams there, you just have to pay a heavy price.

Its amusing to see drivers form a pack mentality to make space , and motorcycles definitely have the tendency to do that. Having the same car as someone else is always an easy segway into friendship too.
Mustangs don't wave, they growl at eachother, but Subarus are just as capable of grouping up and commanding the road too. Though they are a rare sight.

I knew someone with a Ninja, and I definitely got the impression all Motorcyclists are cool with each other but also some of the stereotype of them being assholes is true. Though the same could be said about Mustang owners.

A side tension strap. Its only used when being lowered or raised though.
That's a shame though I hoped you learned your lesson then. If you got another one it would be pretty nostalgic I bet.
I absolutely can not take chances in the rain, as shes extra heavy and careens everywhere anyway.

My current dream is take my pony to the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap as it'd be a hot toy there. It just has to be ready first.
A cross trip on a motorcycle sounds like quite the adventure, I'd imagine you'd need some stamina to survive being windblasted and road friction bumps for extended periods of time.

Is that the paint used for a touchup?
Mustangs,Challengers and Z's are the only cars that look good Orange I think.

I suppose ill just have to start my own then.

I mean, ive been to a lot of car meets that then everyone decides to go to a place, and when i was a kid, i was in my fair share of like, everyone stops on the highway and races kind of bullshit, but its not something i like, expected to happen.
I think its because motorcycles tend to double up for safety. Like, you are taught to ride 2x2 in training, so motorcycles tend to do it so that A you are more visible, and B because you shouldnt ride in the middle of a lane, because thats where all the oil and crap is, so you end up making like, a formation. Then, because pair naturally form, they meet up and form a quad, then 2 quads meet up... its chemistry haha. Or maybe more like a konga line haha. But its the nature of it. That dosnt happen with cars in my experience where they just start fallowing each other like that. Also, i think deep down every motorcyclist fancies themself a fighter pilot haha.
I know im being pessimistic, 99% of motorcyclists are great awesome people, but that 1% is so shitty and noticeable that it really ruins it, just like guns, just like skateboarding, just like anime and ponies haha, just like anything fun that gets popular.

Oh, hopefully it holds, ill give it some of my power... aaaaaaaaa. Sorry, its cold out, not a lot to spare.
I ... I mean, yeah, i learned my lesson to be careful in the rain with a RWD car that weights 1200lbs and makes 160ish break hp haha. I never fucked around on the road with that thing, i even joined the SCCA so i could do track days and Autocross, thats the shitty part of it haha. So yeah, i also learned that your Daily driver shouldnt be your toy haha. Me and my buddy were always around the street racers, but never actually participated, we just laughed when they blew their motors and crashed and shit haha.
We also made a ground effects kit for my friends jetta out of an old refrigerator box and glow sticks and brought it to a parking lot meet once haha. Ill see if i can find a pic.

>Tail of the Dragon

Thats been quit a popular destination as of late. I think we should have a pchan motor meet up there at some point haha.

Duplicolor? Yeah, its like, the stuff you can buy at autozone for touch ups.

It nearly impossible to search for "quiet motorcycle muffler" and get something other than "why would you want that? GOTTA GO LOUD!" as a result.

Seriously, try it.

This is what i mean when i say i love motorcycles but sometimes hate motorcyclists haha. Though, im starting to think really any aftermarket muffler will be quieter than the one i currently have.

It would be a little ridiculous for me to go spend tens of thousands of dollars buying an electric motorcycle than to spend like... 70 dollars on a better muffler for the motorcycle i already have, tbh.

I like the idea of them, but, they are expensive and inefficient at the moment.
I like the sheer amount of torque they produce, its pretty wild. I rode an electric fatbike off road once and thought it was awesome, and yeah, the silence of it is really appealing, but like, it way outside a reasonable price to get an EV motorcycle that is road worthy and has enough range to make it practical in any sense.
Maybe someday.

I bought my bike for $750. Im not buying a Chinese amazon special electric motorcycle for three times the price that will leave me stranded just because my current muffler is too loud.

Thats still more than i spent on even my primary vehicle. If im spending 8k on something, i expect not to get wet when it rains.

It would be cool to have the money to spend on something like that, but i dont. Even buying this bike was pretty much my "big" purchase for the past 2 years, and i sold a bunch of things to pay for it regardless.
The most i ever spent on a car was 9k, and the least was $250 most were at or around 1000 though. But i have a house to maintain, health to maintain, and a dog to take care of on a 13.50/hr salary.. i cant be dropping 8k on an electric motorcycle.
Though, i am surprised to see the specs on that bike at that price point. If i lived/worked in a more urban environment, it might be something i would look into more seriously.

Hasn't been much that's particularly rare lately. This time of year it's all common SUVs, 4x4's plow trucks that sort of thing.

The only thing that stands out is this:
See I had it in my head that it was a Buick but then when I got in it and started it up I got hit by a huge nostalgia bomb cuz from the drivers seat it was nigh indentical to my first car, an 87 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Same color, hood, hood ornament, engine, starter, steering wheel etc. So for a moment I felt like I had been transported back to the late 90's or early 00's.

What's your slogan?

The car/bike pack group up happens pretty often where I live actually, though most formed groups of car meets I've seen frequent the same places, usually Autozone parking lots or Industrial Tractor Trailer country. Some of the Interstate here has a big loop so I've definitely gone back and forth just to roll with people in the konga line. Now with my new top, I won't be so embarrassed to pull over and have people get a closer look. Though all that car meet life has kinda dissipated within the last year due to reasons.
>but that 1% is so shitty and noticeable that it really ruins it, just like guns, just like skateboarding, just like anime and ponies haha

I'm still learning honestly, but I havent had to learn the hard way.
When you almost crash and slide in the rain so many times, It's better to be safe then sorry. I've spent little time at tracks, but thats because I felt it was silly to go there without a performance vehicle. Like, nobody cares about your V6 Mustang or Hyundai Tiburon's new record, ya know?
Now that I have a V8, I'd still rather street race. Plus I have a convertible, so being extra heavy and track time is silly.
It should be something I should try though someday.

I'm glad to hear you havent had to learn the hard way. Some people learn so hard they never get a chance to apply their knowledge haha.
The culture died a little bit here too, aswell, but im not sure if it died, or if i just fell out of it and cant seem to find it again haha. Im sure if i go looking for it, or ring old contacts i could find it. But honestly, im more into a solitary enjoyment for the time being. But it use to be if you went up and down the main drag a few times, you would get into a few light-to-light pulls and then find a meetup. Normally in the back of the mall parking lot haha.
I think they get broken up by the police cops now though is why they dont happen like they use to anymore. I love being part of the generation that "ruined it for everyone" regarding many things haha /s

tru
>I've spent little time at tracks, but thats because I felt it was silly to go there without a performance vehicle. Like, nobody cares about your V6 Mustang or Hyundai Tiburon's new record, ya know?
I disagree, i think everyone should bring their car to a track, even if they dont into cars. Its a safe environment where you can push your vehicle to its limits, and learn how to handle an extreme situation. Its like when i would go to big vacant parking lots to practice driving in the snow and correcting slides and stuff.
Plus, for people like us, its a lot of fun. Who cares if other people are impressed or not, i mean, cars and track times and stuff are a dime a dozen anyway, but you can still have a lot of fun. Ive had just about every car ive owned ether on a track, or at least in a rally/autocross situation, because, a lot of times all that "power" is useless and its really about driving skill. Thats why cars are classed. If you want to get into actual racing racing then there is plenty of opportunity.
https://www.scca.com/pages/find-your-fun
Idk exactly what area you are in, but this will help you find events in your area. I suggest autocross because its cheap and easy, requires no mods, its fun as heck, and you dont get your car dirty haha.
Also, im sure your local speedways will have open days where you can take a registered vehicle onto the track. Seriously, you can have fun with any car.

>Need for Speed Underground?

I only played 2 haha and i dont remember the refrigerator box mod.

Straight fire.

I've definitely come close a few times to biting it early, and as good as the adrenaline high feels, I have newfound respect and caution.
The culture around here is pretty well knit, as many people have their Instagram/snapchat tag decal'd onto their car, and I've had many people ask me for my instagram to invite me to things.
The usual spots are empty now, but there was a time during early quarantine where the police were totally hands off, and the roads were pretty empty, so the narrow window of time where everyone was going fast and having a good time was pretty great.

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, but where I'm at there's plenty of backroads and large logistic/factory areas so pushing your car to its limit safely isnt that difficult to pursue.
Now that I've got the new top I can be fully proud to bring my car to something like that, last top had duct tape and was ugly.
I think I'll look into it, I'll let you know If I do.

Surely you remember the neon and overly large body kits?

If we ever do a meetup, I think its a fun suggestion.

Thats all well and good till you get that one guy walking his dog or on a bike or something.
Jus sayin'. Im not like, saying you're doing anything wrong, because i also love the backroads and stuff, but having a consequence free area where you can spin out completely and there are no trees, or peoples lawns, or stone walls, or ditches and stuff... its a lot more better'er haha.

>pintrest decals

Yeah, actually i've seen that around here a lot too, but mostly on the "chopped and screwed" type tuner cars that have wheel camber so out of what you think they are about to take off and fly back to the future, and sub boxes that make their glass turn liquid, not so much the performance crowd. I dont have a problem with those types, they are having fun with cars and thats great, but we are in it for completely different reasons.

>I think its a fun suggestion.

Summer maybe. Ill have to ether get the dog to enjoy motorcycles, or get my tailor set up so i can schlep it down with my car. Though, i will say, my focus is a ton of fun through he mountains, but obv the bike would be my "thing" to bring. haha.
>I approve of the cardboard Type R badge.
lul, thanks.
Like i said, there wasnt a big sense of humor about it from the tuner crowed. We actually caught quite a lot of shit right as we pulled in because they were always super defensive around here. But they didnt throw shit at us and by the end of the night everyone was having fun, once they realized we were just goofing.

>Thats all well and good till you get that one guy walking his dog or on a bike or something.
Yeah there's a degree of risk but also thrill. As I've been forced to take truck safety driving courses, that is something I think about. I doubt anyone walks their dog through truck dock country though. My cars so loud its not like I can sneak up on anyone either.
A track would be nice to go all out, I've just been able to do it elsewhere already.

Yeah lots of people make questionable car mods, and those shops like to advertise themselves on peoples cars.
Its their car, but I'd prefer to stand out with a bit of subtly. Those huge rims are pretty ugly.
But hey, their babies are one of kind.

When we decide its cleared up. Riding a motorcycle with a dog sounds pretty dangerous, but If your dog is having fun its pretty impressive.
If we do that can I lead the pack or should you?

My un-inclusiveness towards non performance vehicles was probably rubbed off on me by the same car culture people, but if you talk to us we'll warm right up.

This is pretty much the whole reason i got the bike haha. My commute is ~30mi of backroads that twist through management areas and farmland haha. There are a few switchbacks iv mastered in my car that i cant wait to hit with the bike.
>A track would be nice to go all out, I've just been able to do it elsewhere already.
To restate, im not trying to make it sound like im accusing you of being irresponsible, that would be hypocritical of me, im just trying to paint a picture of the feeling of nearly ultimate freedom you are afforded by a track.

There are lots of options for this, but yeah, there is an inherent danger to it. Mitigation is the name of the game, for instance, i would never go on an interstate like that, or in city traffic. Backpack i think is looking like the best option.
There are a lot of things you can do on a motorcycle that you wouldnt think you can do on a motorcycle. Reading about asian motorcycle culture, where a lot of people have motorcycles as their primary transport is pretty interesting. They have a work around for nearly anything you could ever want to do haha.

It was a Suzuki samurai, which is a truck, like a jeep, not a motorcycle.

But still, its an open air vehicle.

The best story i have about the dog and that truck was, i stopped at the market once with her just to grab like 2 things quick, total of maybe 10 min. I parked in the shade, and it was earlier may so it was around 73f out. So i come out and some dude is sitting by my truck on his phone looking into it, and i was like "can i help you?" and the dude literally started screaming at me "YOU CANT LEAVE A DOG IN A CAR ON A HOT DAY!!!" like freaking out, moving around and throwing his arms "IM CALLING THE POLICE!"

I look over, trucks in the shade, glorious spring day, not doors, no top, no window, completely open air vehicle, and im like... "Com'ere" and she hops out and comes to me and im like "Tell me what the difference is between her being there (in the bed of the truck) and her being here?" i told him i dont have AC at my house, and sometimes we go to the park, is he going to have me arrested?
So, like, i tell him to go ahead and call the cops, and he stomps away, and i sit and wait for them but they never showed up so i just went home.
People are fucking crazy, thats why i avoid them.

>Are modern muscle cars not true?

Well it depends on how exactly you define "Muscle car" and how specifically it differs from "sports car." Generally a muscle car is a largish American production car powered by a V8 and rear wheel drive. Those pretty much went away in either the late 80's or early 90's depending on who you ask as their models were switched to FWD and V6's or I4's. There are still sports cars like the Corvette, Camaro and Mustang but they're distinct from the muscle car for generally being smaller and less utilitarian and more just for fun. Like you can pack 6 kids and a month's worth of groceries into most muscle cars, not so much a Corvette or Mustang.

>>491369
>>491366

That car was built for the Gambler 500. An offroad rally specifically for impractical kitbash vehicles like that. It seems to be a Firebird, Town Car, Magnum and who knows what else.

I had considered doing something similar by putting my 84 Monte Carlo's body onto my 94 Chevy Astro AWDs frame. But then I sold the Astro. Although the Astro is built upon the same 1.25 ton frame as the Suburban, Silverado and CUCV it's suspension is nerfed having torsion bars in the front and single leaf springs in the back. The leaf springs aren't that big a deal but the torsion bars would be a bit of a nuisance. Fun fact though, you can break a torsion bar in the Astro and it will still be drivable and not immediately crash and burn. There's a highway bridge down the road from here that has some fairly significant rises between the expansion joints so your vehicles bounces rhythmically as you cross it and a TB went out while I was on it once. I felt it go but I wasn't sure what had happened until I got to my destination, got out and saw the thing leaning significantly.

Oh right, the Jeep clone. I personally view Suzuki cars as very poor quality, so I typically think of their ATVs or motorcycles when I hear the name.

Whenever someone approaches my vehicle, my dog acts all vicious, so he tells them to fuck off for me. That's how I get out of speeding tickets.
Yeah people should worry about themselves, especially when their attempts of being a good samaritan are absolutely pointless and ill advised.
Don't be mad at me because your poochie is so frail.
>>491454
I see, the traditional muscle car is dead, as four-door big power vehicles are non-existent these days really.
I suppose most people have a v8 sports car for fun on weekends and drive the kids around in something else, which may have attributed to that niche dying.
>>491454
>kitbash vehicles like that
That's some Max Max shit.

That transam/Cherokee combo pictured seems like a good frame to build off of. Kitbash vehicles having offroad suspension as a foundation seems pretty important.
I'm sure you can make it work, form vs function though.

I mean, i would if i saw one for a good price, but they can be pretty pricey.
There is a company in India that makes reproduction willies, and they are only like $8k, and everyone says they are super awesome and well built. They come with everything they need to be street legal, but they cant be registered because they are sold as UTVs and dont meet modern highway safety regulations.

Though, i think in AZ you can register a UTV for street use, but you cant take it on an interstate.

They are for soccer moms that want to feign "tactical" and they are so over loaded with gizmos that they are barely reliable. I have. Its a fucking project to get that thing to move haha. You literally need to re learn what driving is because its a bunch of levers and shit that are not at all what you know. Like, it just goes, there is not accelerator, its more like an on/off switch like a lawnmower with the turtle and the hare. You set the speed you want, and you leave it.

>>492075
The thing about my 91 jeep, and even more so with the sammi, was that they were real off road vehicals, as in, you didnt need a road, or a path, you could just dodge between trees.
New jeeps are so big, that you need a road. Like, sure, you can make it down a crappy road, but you still need a path that is artificially cleared of trees.
The samurai, i could literally just drive into the woods at any given spot and ping pong my way through haha.
New jeeps are more like 90s broncos and Blazers than they are jeeps, and the 4 doors are like suburbans. Just big hulking useless but "cool" status symbols. At least the gladiator has a bed, so that one i dont mind, its a convertible pickup and thats awesome haha.

True, technology has come a long way.
Sometimes innovation can go the wrong way In experimentation I feel though.

Don't buy a Honda Pilot. The new models have an issue with the wiring, rendering them useless as their touch display are essential to operation. Teslas could have this problem too.
It just seems silly to have a whole vehicle crap out because of a simple tech issue.
Things getting too technical makes them more prone to failure, and hard to service too.
>>492164

I honestly preferred my big Behemoth v8 bronco for mudding haha. They are great in wide open spaces and the power could get you out of a mud hole no problem and turn the 40" swammpers you need to do it, but mud pits are generally just an unmaintained road or field, not like, wilderness, so where the Bronco could power through the slop like a champ, my little 1200cc Suzuki could skip across it like a pebble (or go around), and then turn into the woods and prance happily throught the forest haha.
The only thing that could go more places than that suzuki was an ATV or dirt bike, and at least the suzuki kept you dry in the rain.
That was the point of the original WWII jeep, it could go almost anywhere. Didnt need a lot of power, MPG was more important, didnt specialize in one kind of terrain, because you didnt know what was coming up, it was just a go anywhere rig that could fit through anything. Thats why i say my zuki was more like a jeep than a jeep haha.

I really miss that truck, huge regret selling it. Would have been a great adventure vehicle. C'est la vie.

Whats funny is, it would have been a great vehical to do what i want to do with my motorcycle, back roads cross country travel with good MPG, but, would have been no issue for the dog, and given me a shelter.

Well ya know its funny cuz we started extracting oil as a replacement for whale oil for lamps as whales were being hunted to extinction and the supply could meet the demand. At first they used external combustion steam engines to pump the crude oil out of the ground but as it turns out fire, oil and oil-soaked timber structures don't mix very well. So then somebody came up with the brilliant idea of using the new-fangled internal combustion engine to pump the oil. This had the advantage of running on refined crude oil and was sufficiently torque-y that it could run multiple pumps at once using a series of long steel linkages.

Then once electricity had solved our lamp problem somebody else said: "we have all this oil and we have these engines, why not use them to solve our horse manure problem?"

And the rest is history...

So, i got around to taking the mufflers off the bike to see what the issue was, or if i could repack them or what, and found that they were completely rotted through underneath haha.
That could be contributing to the obnoxiousness i was talking about. So, that being the case (and since they are a lost cause for polishing / repacking) i just ordered the cheapest pair of mufflers i could find on amazon, figuring any muffler will be better than this haha.
I got flat black, because they were the cheapest, (60 for the pair, saved 28 bucks by buying a set) and i should have gotten chrome, but it was a bit more expensive, and they only had 1 in stock haha.
I'm registering the bike on monday, and these should be in on tuseday, so that works out well, can install them and see how they sound right away.

Also, this pic might give you an idea of the "care" that the previous owner took of the bike. He fancied it a "rat rod cafe racer" and i guess he figured that just meant neglect.

>>493048
Yeah. I mean, the biggest reason we got the boat was because our father had left us a mooring when he died, but if we didnt register something to it by the end of last year, we would have lost it. The harbor master had been being a wicked bro and let us register a zodiac to it every year since he passed but he was finally like "get a legit boat or your going to lose it" so, we did haha. Its right at the end of my sisters road, so they can literally walk down the road and use it every day if they want to, which is why they paid for it but i still got a key for helping with upkeep and getting the deal, because really its like 80% their boat.
>Only reason I brought it up is, I think of all the hobbies Ive dipped into but then lost interest in.

I guess in someones mind it will haha. I dont think he had a lot of mechanical know how, tbh. He was crafty, he made surfboards for a living and worked at a boat yard, but just being good with fiberglass dosnt mean you are great with everything. Tbh, i dont know what it was like before he got it, maybe he actually improved it haha. I know he had the motor gone through, because that runs great, and all the carbs were sync'd ect.. but i know he thought the exhaust was great and even used it as a selling point, which i used as a money off point haha.

You'd think an engineered suspension system with rubber bump stops wouldn't have such difficult upkeep.
I mean, changing them out every 10 years? Who has time for that?

Seems pretty standard, but I guess it'll fulfill its purpose.
I would avoid Amazon car parts personally, but I like to go a step above usually.
I've definitely been asked once to find a different parking spot because of early morning warm ups haha.

Well let me know how they work out.

I'm just envisioning a tiny state with a coastline jam packed full with parked boats. Any wasted spots need to be taken.
Years ago I was invited to the sailboat race they have in Chicago. That was fun. Except when it came time to roll up the sail.

Yeah hobbies can get played out and then you find yourself with leftover equipment. I just can't bring myself to let go of some things though. If it was anything more complicated than literally just a tube, i probably wouldnt be getting it on amazon haha, but motorcycle mufflers are really simple, its just a tube with a baffle in it, and maybe sometimes some fiber glass. I dont expect them to last the entire season tbh, but by getting the cheapies for now, i can afford to get the wiring harness that has all the bullet and nut connectors and insulation wrapping pre-installed, so that will save me at least a shitty mufflers worth of headaches, and is more important at the end of the day haha. Like i said, it was only when i saw the condition of the ones that were on it and figured "literally anything would be an upgrade" that i went for it.

Another thing, i know i said i wanted to return it to as close to stock as i could, but man, you cant look at stuff for these bikes without getting cafe racers, scramblers, and brats tossed in your face the whole time, and it is rather tempting to want to go full custom like that haha. I do have a set of clip on handle bars, that might go on while i take my time polishing the stock ones haha.

I think when the "ocean state" name was coined, we had one of, if not the longest coastline of the states (all like, 17 of them at the time haha). We have a lot of islands and bays, so even though we are a small state, our coast is pretty damn long.
Americas Cup was the race i was thinking of btw.

Thats cool you went sailing, did you like it? I mean besides putting the gear away haha. You get use to it and can get sail covers back on pretty quick once you do it in the freezing rain enough times haha.

Did you really go snowboarding down there? Haha.

"Just get it fixed"
When I think of classic stock builds, I imagine it being absolutely pristine, with enthusiasts really eyeing over all the details and it seems like a lot of work to get there. It would be a cool thing to have, but with it being such so old with a big aftermarket there may be more fun to have really making it your own as you fix it up.

Well given the location it was freezing cold and there were high winds on the first day, and we weren't making distance so we turned around at dusk.
It was an interesting sailboat ride, though I'd prefer something with a motor. You'd have to really love pursing that, fighting and being mercy against the elements and such. It was so windy we couldn't get the top pulled down for an hour .

>Did you really go snowboarding down there? Haha.

Yes, there was plenty of snow. I went to a huge water basin off a high road. Plenty of other folks had the same idea. Only one other person there had a snowboard and some teenagers kept asking me to try my board out. They broke all my straps!

Considering that im going to change my mind 3 or 4 times by the end of the week reguarding what my "end goal" is with it, probably the best bet is to just keep going forward and see what ends up happening haha. That way even im surprised haha.
Tbh, im way more concerned about stuff like rebuilding the forks and doing the wheel bearings and stuff atm, more than what style is importaint.
But, for the sake of argument, i would probably go full fairing classic sportbike haha.

Yeah, sailing on a calm day is a lot more fun tbh. Its amazing how little wind is actually required to get a 10k lbs boat scooting across the waves haha. I've always enjoyed sailing, but at the same time, I've always hated it too.

That sucks about your board. Thats what you get for being nice to teenagers though haha.

How is your top doing? I just realized you moved down south, where its not suppose to be cold, and then you decided to fix your convertible and it snows for the first time in like 100 years haha. We have the same kind of luck.

Its fun to imagine some sort of endgoal.
One thing at a time as that's how something is built.
Yeah, now that I'm prepared for the incoming rain, I can turn my attention back towards the important stuff.

That was the only time I was on one lol. I do wish to have a boat of some kind some day.
Maybe a pontoon or a nice speed boat.

It hadnt been used in 4 years, but I'm not worried about as I probably won't get to use it again for awhile.

Yeah , what are the odds! I had to get it done quick in the freezing cold because of the blizzard.
I did go drifting in the snow after I finished. Unintentionally The roads were caked.
I also went to the dealership to get some replacement pins for the front broken weather strips. Honda sells them by the piece, but Ford does not.
Ended up finding some Nissan pins that fit at Advance.
One new set literally broke as I put them in, so you were right.
Just did a car wash and nothing came through.

Sailing is awesome on a nice warm sunny day. Actually it really depends on who you're with haha. Sailing can bring out the worst in people because there is always a lot to do to not crash, and its normally a 2 person job at least, so like, if you are easily offended, or if you ever "idk why you have to say it like that" a sail boat is best avoided. But, if on the other hand you dont care about that kind of stuff, they can be really rewarding.

I miss RWD in the snow tbh.
>you were right.
It was bound to happen eventually if i just kept saying things haha.

Glad to hear its holding up well and free of leaks. Not that i didnt think that would be the case, just glad its confirmed.

Thanks, Glad I don't have to do it again.

Speaking of sailing I think I'm gonna rig a sail on my Jon boat this spring.

Converting a 10' jon boat to sailboat! WORKS GREAT!!

Though I think I will use an oar and sculling notch rather than a fixed rudder as that seems more convenient to mount and remove for transport and I'm gonna need oars anyway for the inevitable calm.

What isnt shown in that video is how without a keel it flipped over on the first real gust he got.
Other than that, its kind of like an opti. I really do think you should fab a keel though or else it will never track right, and it will get flippy real quick.

Ya, I've been flipping through my engineering textbooks to see what I do about that. Right now leeboards seem most practical. If they're mounted stoutly enough they should bite-in on heaving-to. Still wouldn't be terribly stable but it should be adequate for the local lake.

Just buy an opti haha.
For the amount of work you need to do to get a john boat to sail, you could buy a used optimist that is taking up room in some parents garage from last year when there kid begged for sailing lessons and then lost interest.
Would prob come with a trailer too.
Or even just build one.

Early march is a wild ride here. Windy AF and somtimes it like 12f and sometimes its like 65f and there is no predicting it.

I dont work on my own car anymore. I take it to the shop. I made that rule with this car, as it is the newest car ive ever owned, and i just want everything done right (or rather with someone to blame). I really dont like working on cars, esp modern cars, and esp my DD.
I like working on motors, but like, working on a DD sedan... i just get frustrated and throw wrenches and shit haha.
Its worth the extra 100 bucks to have someone else throw the wrench.

A project, no prob, ill just walk away from it when there is a stripped bolt or something thats being a pain, but the DD, then there are time constraints, and really no pay-off besides being back to par haha. So, fuck that, let someone else with all the tools and lifts and shit do it.

I mean major repairs, i still do PM and oil changes and tune ups and shit. But stuff you have to take half the motor apart to get to, nah, fuck that, not on the DD.

Seems on par with the course being up North and being off the water. You're not quite out of the snow perhaps.
We get godly amounts of rainfall down here.

I'm with you on that, modern vehicles are not made in such a way to be easily worked on.
I've also taken my car for some things because it can a hassle sometimes. You have to yell at your car at least once right?

March is in like a lion and out like a lamb, or so they say.

If i didnt use the car for lyft / if it didnt have a decent resale value, i would be jbwelding this shit back together as we speak and moving on haha. But since its a fairly nice car, and i use it for work, and im a total hack when it comes to keeping the daily rolling, its in the worlds best interest that i just bring it to the shop haha.
I bring it to the same place i bought it, and they are pretty good, they dont fuck me over which is nice, because i would know it if they were.

Right, and by the time you've ubered back and forth a few times, you paid for the labor as if you had just taken it to the mechanic, and had to deal with the stress of it all haha.
Though, i guess if you only have one vehicle you end up ubering while its at the mechanic anyway.
Idk, its all a trade off. Its like, i know i could do it, because ive done it before, but i dont wanna so there haha.

There's a new small dent that must have come from trying to pry that tac bar out of the car with a crowbar.
Better then the last job where I carved a lightning bolt into it.

Depends on the difficulty of what needs to be done.
Hopefully you shouldn't have to work on your car that much to have to do the math of whats more cost effective.

Not owning a motorcycle I've never separated the two really.

Yeah, i wouldnt do that, i mean, get rid of something so necessary for the sake of style.
But, if you look at the mirrors i have, they actually come down underneath which is a fair solution. But the handle bars come up instead of straight or down.

Got a husky air compressor. Gonna sell it because costco has free nitrogen stations. I'm serious. I think tires filled with nitrogen maintain inflation pressure longer than compressed air tires in different temperatures.

Yeah, nitrogen is less susceptible to temperature fluctuations than plain compressed air.
But... Maybe I am just cynical but given how many people I see driving around on underinflated tires already I reckon the nitrogen thing is just going to cause them to ignore their underinflated tires even harder than they did previously.

Personally I keep my tires 2-4 psi overinflated. Enough to improve fuel economy a smidge but not enough to cause excessive tread wear.

BIG Oof.
Moment of silence.
Permanent resale kick.

Yeah im hoping so too. A friend actually said i could borrow their motorcycle to go to the DMV, but it wasnt the kind of friend you want to owe a favor too haha.

all bikes have been dropped

Whats next on the mustang list now that the top has been sorted?

That's surprising because most friends I had wouldn't let anyone touch their bike, so a favor is probably expected haha.
crowd gasp!

Well now I'd really like to change out the spark plugs and coil packs, as I know the previous owner did zero preventive maintenance.
My research shows that this engine is prone to those failing in some way.
The goal is to try and improve my MPG really, as it's more than terrible.
I had an error code pop up once for a fuel sending unit or something but it went away after a day.
Other then that, cosmetically, everything is sound except the hood. It had a scoop on it but it flew/broke off. So now theres 6 exposed holes in the hood, but I dont want to pay 300$ for a piece of plastic, so I guess Ill start looking into how to repair that and touch up the paint.

You have a 6cyl yeah? What is suppose to be the MPG on that, and what are you getting?
Did the scoop really come off? haha, thats so lame. I have such a love hate relationship with Ford. Did you recover the scoop, or are you talking about filling and painting the holes in the hood? Because it might looks kind of cool to like, go scoopless.

Hm, don't want to get stuck with legal ramifications, maybe he's just trying to help you out finally?

It's a GT, and I'm pretty positive all GT's are 8-cyclnder.
It's listed at getting about 18-22 mpg, and were getting 16-17 it feels like. So hopefully doing the plugs and packs would start
I'm pretty sure the scoop was aftermarket actually, so whoms't ever installed it didn't do a very good job.
The mounts for it attaching to the hood broke off and appeared to have been already glued once. Which was kind of dumb honestly when you subject that thing to aerodynamics so much, you shouldn't reuse it just to save some money. I think it looks better without it, and the scoop abstructed view anyway.

Maybe it was nezi that had the 6cyl then.
Tire pressure and air filter are the 2 biggest contributors to mileage, that arnt computer controlled.
Plugs and wires should be good for tens of thousands of miles at least, but it cant hurt, and if people are saying the car has a tendency to blow them out, maybe its a different circumstance.

Ah, a JC whitney special hood scoop job haha. Good riddance, time for racing stripes to cover the holes when you plug em haha. I thought all GTs after like 2004 had some kind of factory scoop looking ma-jigger though.

Theirs was much newer too.
I didn't realize the Eco Boost was a V-4 until recently.

Definitely need new tires, but they'll hold for now.
There's a bolt on cold air intake which is Blue to match, its probably old.
Much of it is in good condition, I just can't help but think of what's been worn through time.
Cheapy online order special. Its a cool painted piece of plastic and a decoration, but doesn't contribute to much. Its the Need for Speed curse!
A factory scoop was an option, but not commonplace.
Most Mustang cosmetic mods I've seen were scoops or those black deck lids between the tailights.
I believe Ford saw many people were using black deck lids and incorporated it into the design in 2015.

Yeah the eco-boost is almost exactly my old t-bird turbo coup in fancy new clothes haha.
The only reason there are decades between turbo4 mustangs is because, just like when harley tries to build a bike with tech developed after 1920, but bunch of fat old men heave themselves out of their lazy boys to "HEY! HEY! YOU CANT DO THAT! ARMERICAN ICON! YOU CANT DO THAT TO MERICAN ICON! IT NEEDS TO BE THE SAME! IT NEEDS TO BE THE SAME AS IT WAS 60 YEARS AGO! ITS AN ICON!" haha.
Really the mustang should be a direct competitor to the miata imo. A small peppy affordable sports car that is more about go than the show.

Haha, rant. Thats not to say i dont love mustangs though, im just hoping the turbo4 is here to stay this time.

Do you have a pic of yours that isnt just the back end with the roof all under construction? haha

I'm not sure I even have seen that before. Maybe in the 90's when I didn't know any better. Pretty cool.
The loss of tradition.
Please tell me that Mustang SuV or whatever isn't real.

I think the Mustang is a little too American to be humble like that, but the Miata gets plenty of room in that niche. Ford just wants to make trucks now, so the affordability of their pony car is taking a hit I think.
The new MX-5 looks really nice, but I feel like it doesnt have the spirit of those 90's ones.

Not with the new one. Though I should probably top the thread off with one.

Thats what the mustang was always suppose to be though, an affordable "every mans" sports car.
To some extent, it still is, i mean 27k for that turbo4 is pretty cheap. It a car im like "maybe in 10 years i can grab a used one" haha.

Yeah, it sucks about ford yeeting all their cars. I guess its nice that they didnt kill the mustang completely though. I really love my focus, and i wish they kept making them. At least i still have one more round of the used market to go before i reach the "no more cars and manual transmissions" point of ford haha.
Though, i am still waiting to see what the maverick ends up being.

Yeah, show a pic, the masses want to see!

You can still get a ford focus in europe. They basically just canned the cars in the american market because people fell for the suv meme. Europeans still get station wagons too.

I mean they are actually popular enough in Europe that you have actual options. Like the Ford Focus wagon is still a thing there. Whereas if you want to buy a relatively new station wagon in North America your options are fairly limited and mostly fairly expensive.

What they actually did with the market here is though they actually decided people wanted SUV's for them. In Europe the idea of taking out a huge loan to buy a car isn't as heavily normalized. Whereas it is long since normalized in North America.

And generally speaking the more money you borrow the lower an interest rate a lender is willing to offer. And they basically sell cars by monthly payment these days. "Why buy the little car for 250 a month when you can get a fancy SUV for only 50 dollars more a month". Of course they do it worse than that. They break it down into weekly payments.
300 a month becomes 69 dollars weekly. 250 a month becomes 57 dollars weekly. So why not buy the SUV when your payment only goes up by TWELVE DOLLARS!
I don't even know who actually falls for that crap. A lot of people apparently since it's such a common practice.

Most wagons in NA have been rebranded as "crossovers" but you want a wagon, suburu, audi, volvo, mercedes, and mini still make them.
Also, porsche, but thats probably outside the common wallet as far as pricing.

I would have a hard time picking between the suburu and the volvo if i wanted a wagon, which i do, luckily i dont have to worry about such things because i cant afford any car atm haha.

My sister has a suburu, and likes it fine. Its also one of the only cars that had a stated towing capacity.
You can tow with any car, but most mfgs now dont state the capacity and just say "dont" and void the warrantee if they see you've added a hitch.

I dont think it will be enough to hold it, but its enough to not lose it, and to keep it in place while I figure out what i want to do with it.
I might use a fiberglass resin, i plan to sand it down and repaint it anyway so i dont have to be too careful with application, i can just sand it down to match. Would be a good fill for that little missing chunk too.

So, i spent the day armed with a bottle of simple green and a couple of shop towels.
I mean, its not going to win any beauty contests, but it got some dust and grime off so i can see better what im working with. Really needs a serious bath though, esp the frame, id be wiping along and suddenly hit a patch of just... sludge haha.
While i was doing that, i heard a big bang in my driveway, and i guess it was the amazon guy closing his van door, because there was a box. It was my mufflers, come a day early, so that was nice.
I put them on, and they bolted right up no problem which was nice a smooth. Again, not gonna go to a bike show and point to my no-name 30 dollar mufflers like "check out these babies" haha, but they do their job and i dont think they look terrible. They are still louder than i would like, but, not anywhere near as bad as it was.
Bike started on the 2nd kick, which was nice. It feels good when something you buy 2nd ... 3rd... 8th hand just works. Honda though, they are known to be tanks. Still, im use to shit going wrong, so it was nice that shit went right today.
I heard a rattle, and like a really smart person, i grabbed the exaust header while it was running to see if it was where the rattle was coming from, ... twas hot haha.
As for the electrical, i haven't had any problems, i think that guy just had a bad battery. I'm probably still going to get a new harness but at least its not an emergency.
I think im going to be painting it a dark grey.

The cover for the battery box. Its held on with 3 little nubs that clip into rubber mounts and one broke off. I epoxied it more today and the resin set and hardened and i think it will be enough to hold it. Now just gotta sand and paint but will prob hold off for better weather.
Its the green body panel under the seat on the left side.

Haha, duct tape if it moves and it shouldnt WD40 if it dosnt move and it should.
There is nothing wrong with the actual foam of the seat itself, so it would be cheaper just to reupholster. They sell the original covers that say honda and everything, same stitching and all for like 40 bucks, it would just be a matter of taking off the old one, and stapling on the new one.

Well, most people refer to the 70s gas crisis and the strict emissions regs that fallowed as having "killed the muscle car", i think thats what he is referring to. So it really depends on how you define muscle car. If by muscle car you mean, primarily mopar cars from the 60s and early 70s, then yeah, they died. But if you just mean a high displacement, affordable, light to light racer, then i think we have more options than ever atm haha.

Some folks reckon the 96 Chevy Impala SS to be the last true muscle car. Others assert the Ford Crown Vic police interceptor was.
The Mustang is the name ship of the "pony car" concept, that being a small muscle car. Though that only holds true if you bought a V8 Mustang. The first gen Mustang could be had with a Thriftpower I4 which was pathetically underpowered even by 1960's standards.
I picked up a red 65 Mustang with that engine years back for work. A Prius could have outrun it.

I believe it was Car & Driver magazine that made that assertion. Don't expect me to remember what year or issue though.
It's also argued the 76 Trans-Am was the last truly-true muscle car or else the 74 Buick Century 455 was. "Muscle car" being really just a buzzword allows plenty of wiggle-room for such arguments.

Is kinda like: Is the M1 Carbine an assault rifle or an SMG? But as prone to
rage and vitriol as 9mm vs. .45.
I tend to lean more towards cars from the 80's and 90's because that's what I'm most familiar with but more puritanical types tend to set the date sometime in the mid-70's. Google: "The last American Muscle car" and almost every article will posit a different car.

NERV was the organization that was fighting the Angels in Evangelion.

The quote under it seems biblical if you don't understand the context. "God is in his heaven, All's right with the world." Was their slogan, and it basically stated that as long as the kingdom of man and the kingdom of God remained separate, there would be peace.

This mainly stems from the entire show being about NERV trying to prevent a biblical extinction level event known as The Third Impact.

One of my favorite quotes from the series is when a rival company was trying to make NERV obsolete by creating an Angel fighting robot that didn't rely on using parts of Adam to function. It was purely mechanical and ran on nuclear power, but during it's test run it malfunctioned, it's reactor was set to go critical, and it was heading towards a populated city.

Misato, one of the main characters who works for NERV basically said she was going to stop it and the scientist working on the mech project was like, "That's insane, it would take an act of God to stop that thing!"

Misato turned around and shouted back:
"Acts of men are better than acts of God." and then stormed out to save the city.

Traditionally, when I think of "Muscle car" as a buzz word, It's narrowed down to sports cars that have two doors and a v8, and have an aggressive body style. Though that's what I've grown up with really.
Seems like the four door aspect of this type of vehicle doesn't exist anymore, and as such, the name has been repurposed to just fit an idea.

Overall size. As mentioned previously the Mustang is a pony car, essentially a "compact" muscle car. It lacks the backseat and trunk space of a proper muscle car. Though some will also argue that the Vic isn't one because it's a sedan. Others will say its not because it's Merely a 5.0 but that's just nitpicking imho. Especially since that would imply the turbo V6 Grand National isn't a "muscle car."

>>495153

Not even, the vics had a 4.7 modular V8 just like the mustang.
Sounds like a bunch of horse shit to me haha. A muscle car is a muscle car if you think its a muscle car or there wouldnt be so much debate. Obv there is no true definition, so there is no point in arguing about it. Like, i would say the dodge demon is a muscle car and ticks every box for what a muscle car is, but apparently its not, because reasons.
Myself, i see a muscle car as any obnoxious vehicle that isnt a truck or suv that is only good at going in a straight line fast.

The only real "death of the muscle car" i think is legit, is when the 70s gas crisis hit and cars started getting emissions regulations that drastically changed the line up and performance of a generation of american auto mfgs, because that was a measurable and noticeable situation. Like how baby boomers are the only "generation" that deserved a label because there was a massive statistical change in birthrate during that time.

The rest is just people arguing for the sake of it, which is fine, but i dont think calling the crown vic "the last muscle car" is at all a coherent throught, esp since the camaro and the firebird and the GTO were around at the same time, so even if you want to call the mustang something other than, there were still more cars during the same period that fit the definition better than the vic ever did.

grand nationals are the balls, but i would want a t-type to be that guy haha.

In honesty, yeah, they were garbage.
While the rest of the world was developing tech to push motor vehicles to their limits, developing suspensions and fuel/power efficiency, road track cars with tech that could translate to the real world, we in the US just threw obnoxiously huge motors that made fucking nothing but noise into a garbage floaty poorly planned out chassis that didnt have the breaking power to stop themselves. Have you ever actually driven something like a 1969 charger? Its a fucking nightmare haha. Thats why the rest of the world survived the 70s and most american mfgs ether tanked, got bailed out, or made it by the skin of their teeth.

So while the nostalgia for classic muscle cars is neat, and its fun to restore them and preserve the history, saying "[something] is like what muscle cars were in the 60s and 70s" your basically saying "trucks today are useless pieces of eye candy that are going to ruin the companies that make them" and you are actually probably right.

Its why Lee Iacocca was a hero, he saw it different. Thats why there is legitimacy to the idea that the mustang isnt a "muscle car" because it was offered in a practical sense as well, and he continued to be a hero when he saved Chrysler from their muscle car hangover and got them to produce actual cars that people could use and wanted to buy again.

Well, if you ever want the experience, you can drill holes in the shocks of your truck, intentionally put air in your break lines, and strip out the head liners and carpets from your cab and drive around haha.

Don't get me wrong, i love old muscle cars, there is a charm to driving them, but by no means would i consider them "good cars" haha. Whereas, you can get into a classic toyota or bmw or even a triumph from the same era and be like "ok cool, it drives like a car" haha. Domestic cars of the era wernt the same, you hop into one of them and you think "ok cool, i might die today" haha. The domestic passenger cars were pretty much the same too, most of them still had huge V8s in them, but they were still big heavy behemoths with no breaks that got 7mpg haha.

Again, not ragging on them, they are a piece of history and like i said, it charming to drive one, and a ton of fun, but fun like sky diving is fun haha.

Yeah, but they round-up to 5.0 cuz people just like even numbers I guess.
>Sounds like a bunch of horse shit to me haha. A muscle car is a muscle car if you think its a muscle car or there wouldnt be so much debate.

Well yeah basically. A lot of it comes down to nostalgia and automotive fuddery.
>The only real "death of the muscle car" i think is legit, is when the 70s gas crisis hit and cars started getting emissions regulations that drastically changed the line up and performance of a generation of american auto mfgs, because that was a measurable and noticeable situation.

Oh definitely. Emmisions controls is what lead Dodge to release it's 78-79 Lil Red Express Truck which took advantage of loopholes to avoid such things leading it to be the fastest American production vehicles of those years.

>Also got to love how a lot of youngens look at the big "couch" seats in those old cars and pretend like they would be comfortable or something.

I like them because the bench portion tends to be long enough that you sit deeper in it if you get my meaning. Though this is often offset by the inability to tilt it up or down. The ones that slope downward can be quite awful.

You can see he is absolutely shit faced, and cant even get his gloves on. I love how he passes a cop first thing after pulling out of the driveway haha.

Also, in the other video, in the slow mo, you can see his wrists fucking liquefy on impact haha.

>>495316
Yeah, pretty much. I didnt even know that truck existed tbh.
Also, yeah bench seats are great for fuckin'. The one in my bronco was nice, because it inclined up, was cushy cloth, and it was a split so the backs would recline.

Well, armed with 2 gallon jugs of water and a prayer, i made it to the DMV and back without kersploding my car.
I had all my shit in order so it went smooth and the lady gave me a cool plate as a reward haha.
For some reason, your plate is really important to your status as a Rhode Islander, so its always nice to get a good one.

It poured all morning, but the sun peeked out just long enough for an inaugural ride. Ran great, but a few hiccups along the way relating to that wiring issue, so i guess im not as far out of the woods as i would have hoped. Oh well, time to start jiggling or just pony up for the new harness. Ether way, it runs well enough and i know how to get it back going if it shorts out, so it enough to feel fine sending my car away to the shop.

>>495415
Oof. Maybe its time to start thinking of getting a DD and putting the stang on project car status? A little 40mpg Mitsubishi can be had cheap af.
And yeah, that kids a squid, and hopefully he wont be a danger to anyone anymore. Idk if i would have the wherewithal to get back on a bike after something like that.

Glad you made it. Did you have to stop for a refill halfway?

Does it short on acceleration?

That was the plan actually, but I had to part ways with my Cougar to make ends meet.
It's not very smart to DD a gas hog that's for sure, but It worked out when gas prices dropped from lockdown.
Maybe that'll be the next thing. The math might not even be worth it, having to pay for another car just to save on gas. i would definitely be fine in having something not as nice.

Drivers like that give cyclists a bad name. Unfortunately I doubt he learned his lesson unless spaghetti arms.
Having some friends who ride motorcycles, I fear for those guys on the road, but I mean, the courtesy should go both ways.

I did have to refill for the return trip, because while i was waiting for the light to turn into the DMV, my temp gauge was like "to the moon!" haha. I only had like 75ft to go though. I used my heat as a canary, once it stopped blowing hot, i knew the level was down below the heater core and it was time to start riding the shoulder, just in case haha.
Now i have the car in the garage so it wont freeze and make even more problems.

No, its the harness jiggling around what does it. Its not a problem when im on the throttle because the motor just keeps making spark, it only stalls out when you come to a light, or slow down a lot for a turn or something. It can be solved but just cranking the idle adjustment up, but thats not really a great long term solution.

Yeah, thats math that needs to be done for sure, but i mean, you can find a fuel sipper for around the 2k mark im sure. It dosnt have to be pretty i just needs to get around without breaking the bank haha. Plus having 2 modes of transport is always pretty lit.

>unless spaghetti arms.

Did you see the slo mo? His wrist bones left the safety of his skin haha. I dont think he will be turning a throttle for a few years.
But yeah, unfortunately like everything fun, a bunch of assholes get involved and ruin it. I kind of wish we were like the rest of the world where you had to have a provisional license limited to xxxcc's and prove you arnt a retard before moving up to liter bikes, but nope, you can get a learners permit and jump on a busa out of the gate haha. Yay...

I've been looking for that video, so thanks!

That sucks. I've been there.
Wincing continuously the whole time, hoping it doesn't explode.
Using the air as a tell tale is pretty smart.
When do you plan on getting that fixed?

Guess the wires are brittle from time.
That's like the movie speed, just with less consequences.

Most of the cars I've had I got by going to police auctions, so I'm used to just something to get around.
>having 2 modes of transport is always pretty lit
It's oddly satisfying getting to ask yourself "what car you'll take today"

Gnarly. I definitely felt it.
I'm not too knowledgeable, but I feel like the provision to be able to get a motorcycle license is designed in mind that one already has a regular vehicle license already, and as such, the bar isn't much higher.
that’s you

Yeah, its a whole new world of "extreme driving" haha. Should be its own sport.
>Using the air as a tell tale is pretty smart.
Thanks, i felt pretty clever tbh.
>When do you plan on getting that fixed?
Calling tomorrow morning. Now that i have the bike all set, i can do without the car for a bit. I dont have anywhere to be anyway really.

>Guess the wires are brittle from time.

Orrrrr someone fucked with them haha. All the wrap is removed, and all the individual wires are exposed, so someone went in there and fucked around, that much is for sure.
>That's like the movie speed, just with less consequences.
I want to ride with keanu.

I've always wanted to figure out how auctions work tbh haha. It seems like such a secrete club that im not invited too.
For me it more like "one is always broken, so im glad i have 2" haha. Seriously.

Yeah, i guess that is the idea, but in a lot of the world you are limited by CC for your first riding season, then you can apply to get the restriction raised/eliminated. Driving a car is a lot easier than riding a motorcycle, so when you have a motorcycle that makes as much power as a car for your first bike, bad things happen, and esp if you really only got the bike to participate in bro culture in the first place and dont actually plan on taking the time to learn the actual aspects of riding. Thats how you get drunks doing bong rips and then going out on their GSXR1k in shorts and sandals, rear ending people at 100mph, or fucking up a wheelie and throwing their bike into a family car with kids in it and shit.
Idk, i just know how things in this country work, and its basicly "not a problem, not a problem, not a problem, BAN THEM ALL" and im sick of my hobbies being banned haha.

The regional beater race.
Good luck getting off the start line.
Difficulty:The black plague cometh

>or someone fucked with them haha

Every vehicle has a story and history. Its fun to speculate wtf some people were doing.

>It seems like such a secrete club that im not invited to.

It's very much like that. I always had to go with this guy I knew, as he would flip them for profit.
I'd help him out, while keeping an eye out for something I wanted. Most of them were beaters that belong to now incarcerated people methinks. Cause, damn.

Seems reasonable, though it probably inconveniences a lot of honest drivers. Is that how the restriction is near you?
I've had biker friends like that, and they truly just don't care about anybody but themselves. We're not friends anymore. Fuck those guys.
Reform would be nice but it's just easier that way.

They do have 24hrs of lemons, and that race is basically exactly what we are talking about haha.
https://24hoursoflemons.com/

Thats cool you got into the auctions then, is that where the mustang came from? I can imagine most impound cars are junk. Everyone thinks about the like, high end drug dealer with corvettes and shit at those things, but its some scumbag with a mostly duct tape 1994 corolla haha.

I mean, it would inconvenience them as much as any other regulation, but it would prevent a lot of problems and in the long run, when they ban the shit, thats going to be a bigger inconvenience.
Just this morning there were people on the radio talking about the bike/atv gangs in my city that the cops are doing nothing about, and they were circle jerking misinformation like "you dont even need a license or a registration for a 49cc scooter!" which is 100% fucking false, but people will believe it and these faggot biker gangs are going to get stupid fucking laws passed and really "inconvenience" a lot of people.
I dont see good things for the future of motorcycles. Cars in general, but motorcycles esp, because motorcycles allow too much agency for the liking of authority.
I called into the show to set the record straight but it was ending and i didnt get on the air haha. NOW im officially a boomer haha.
Guns and motorcycles man, 2 things i love that real fucking douche bags like to get involved in and ruin.
All the euros will be laughing at us when they still have access to these things, because they put up with teared license and shit, and we went form ULTIMATE FREEDOM! to COMPLETE BAN! overnight.

Ok so here's an example of the difference between a Mustang and a full-sized muscle car.

The first pic here is the back seat of the 69 Shelby GT500 poster here: >>490633

Note that, while it exists it is basically vestigial, adequate only for groceries or the smallest children.

Now observe this 66 Dodge Coronet 500 convertible:

The leg room still isn't amazing but you could totally fit two average adults back there comfortably.

That's pretty awesome.
It's like an endurance race, but more interesting.
Thrown rods everywhere. Looks like they went virtual recently.

>>495636
A lot of them were. It's surprising how many people just accept to have broken door handles and go without the rearview.
My Cougar and last Mustang(02) were from auctions. Got it cheap because of a ruined CV top and changed that one too. The Cougar sounded terrible and was beat to hell, but had low miles. The ones with nice corvettes don't get caught usually.

Gotta have fun while it lasts.
Regulations get pushed all the time, its a shame some bad apples have to ruin it for everyone.
Calling into a radio station is very boomer, shame you didn't get put on, I bet you would set them straight!
When you got a hot date but the shit box wont stop squeling

Good example. That's what my back seats look like, and I can't think of any full size two door CV's really.

So i had to go to my moms today, and i took the bike because my car is at the shop.
When i got there i found my key had fallen out of the ignition, so thats gone, and so is the gas tank/seat key.
So yeah, another 100+ bucks in suprise repairs, and also i guess i cant use my bike to get around while my car is being worked on like i hoped.
Waiting to hear that something catastrophic happened to the car that is going to cost more than its worth or something.

At this rate, i might be selling both.

>>495978
>>495983
Its just weird that rear leg room is what people are using to define what a muscle car is to me.
That really cuts pretty much anything that is normally thought of as a muscle car out, and only leaves de-tuned 8cyl sedans, and the 00s pontiac GTO i guess.

>>496284
Yeah, it looks like fun tbh, and its something i apparently always have the perfect vehicle for.
I always kind of wanted a cougar. I liked the interior a lot. There were some concept cars of it that were a lot better then what we got tbh haha.
I need me a dude with the in on the auctions haha. I always thought there were more public ones, but i guess thats not really the case. Though, i think im sick of buying used tbh.

>>496353

I'm sure somebody out there has defined it so narrowly that coincidentally only his favorite car happens to be the true "muscle car" and everything else is something else.
The key is not to take it very seriously. Look at them the way my mother does, She would point at the Mustang and say "That one's blue." and then she would point at the Dodge and say: "That one's red."
>I need me a dude with the in on the auctions haha. I always thought there were more public ones
Yeah, most of them are for dealers, those that aren't usually deal in fleet vehicles or are like, for richy-rich type people or for charity.

Also I'm presently taking my yearly safety test. Cuz today's the due-date and I will get whined-at if I don't. It's like: "True or false: it is OK to stick your dick in a running bench grinder."
And I am like: "I would totally stick my dick in a running bench grinder if it means I don't have to do this stupid test."
