just a little ways downriver, it slows quite a bit. the locals won't swim there due to alligators.
I was using a crappie rig, with a jig head and a bobber, sinking between 3-5 feet, casting upriver and then floating it down. lost a couple in the trees on the other side unfortunately. problem was, the bait was bits of cooked chicken strips, which were too tender and fell apart, sometimes on the first cast. As I reeled it in, tiny fish were chasing after and nibbling it, so the fish liked it; it just wouldn't stay on the hook.
a large softshell turtle came up to investigate the bobber. and there was also a tiny turtle that came up behind it at one point.
also saw some mussels moving along the sandbar - never seen them actively moving before; just the trails. I wonder if they were the critically endangered Ochlockonee moccasinshell. I can't tell mussels apart.>>391098
I got my line snagged a few times, but over all it worked pretty well!>>391217
