There has been a lot of doom talk lately, and threads with 1600 posts are hard to keep tabs on, so, heres a thread to consolidate all that.

Was thinking we can post speed runs and Max runs too, and maybe get a little freindly competition going. Or post wads or whatever too.

Doom is a game we can literally all play because if your talking here, you have a device it runs on, so, crack open a boomer juice and hop in!

Alright. I'm interested in seeing how your run goes to both see how difficult you think it is and also to see how many things you find, because outside of the treasure secrets that do nothing, there are two weapons and technically three upgrades you can miss during the run. The last upgrade is strong but also super fun, but it can be easily missed because there is a specific thing you have to do that's unmarked to gain access to it and if you miss it you can't go back.

Also, there are checkpoints so if you die you don't have to restart the entire level. (There is something wonky with the power panels though. If you turn one on and then die, when you come back to it, it will show it's already been activated, but all you have to do is walk up to it then back up and it will reset so you can activate it again.)

Not being able to go back is prob my biggest nitpick tbh. Not because of the secret, but because you end up leaving so much health behind that when you get to the section before the barron, your pinned against the wall at the bottom of the stairs by a hell knight, and its hella tight to evade. Its all cramped, but i feel like that wouldnt be as big an issue if you could go back for supplies you left behind after getting pinned.

In the thing talking about the summoner being hard to kill and to go into his office, its just a spacing thing like "inthe" instead of "in the".

Havent died yet, except i let the mosters kill me a few times while i was rebinding keys.
My connection died while fighting the summoner, so that froze the game.

Ah. So you made it about half way through so far.

Also here's a trick you can do to make the hallway fight easier: you know the shield you picked up? Use that to build a wall to trap the other enemies in the back hallway so you can fight the Hell Knight 1v1. (Or trick him into jumping into the swarm of zombie engineers that spawn behind you and blow him up.)

Also, make liberal use of the grenade launcher attachment on the shotgun.

Shotgun is the only weapon ive used so far, i cant stand that burst rifle thing. Thats a personal preference though, not a critique.

Well, i used the pistol for the first section because i didnt realize i had a shotgun. Where did i get the shotgun? Was it on the same table as the pistol? I hope so, because there are shotguns on the rack there.

Also, i think the control issue is that they were set to multiplayer controlls, and ive never played multiplayer doom.

The shotgun is on the floor next to the dead soldier and red keycard in the security section of the first room. You basically almost can't grab the keycard without also picking up the shotgun unless you are specifically making a effort to not grab it. This is on purpose so that you can't miss it.

The rifle is kinda bad but it's good enough for long range damage. I primarily use it to tag the first Mancubus while taking cover behind the crates until he gets in shotgun range. The primary reason it's there is just on the off chance you run out of shotgun rounds you aren't fucked, because the pistol uses energy ammo, which isn't available until the Summoner fight.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Summoner fight goes, because it's a major event in the level. It's also kinda hard as balls if you're not careful.

Oh, then thats my second nitpick. Wall full of shotguns, cant take a shotgun haha.
Where you get the pistol there are 3 shotguns on a rack above the table, and i was like "why not can i has scattergat?" Haha.

I had gotten the summoner to around 60ish% ill finish it tomorrow. Its pretty much bedtime.

Alright. I'll save you some headache: The Summoner cannot be "killed" with basic weapons. You absolutely HAVE to glory kill it for it to die. If you get it to the flashing state and just unload on it, it will do nothing.

Keep that in mind.

What do you think so far? I tried to make it atmospheric. You have to realize that every prop and decal you see was added by hand. The editor literally just gives you empty rooms. For example the lab where you fight the summoner does not actually have a toxic pit in it by default. That entire thing, the pipes, etc was all added after the fact.

That much i figured from reading the thing about being able to stun it be not giving it a "final blow".

Its fun, its a challenge map for sure. Like i said, its feels a little cramped at times, and i wish i could go back for supplies, or maybe the med packs should be a little more scattered because i ended up leaving a ton behind.
Atmospherics are great, and the little story bits are well written (typos aside haha). I got a little lost in the dark, as the key card spot wasnt very well lit and just kind of blended in with the rest of the emergency lighting. I feel like if those torches on the back wall gave off more light, that would be easier. Tbh, i didnt even notice those torches were there until after the light came back on is how dim they were.
So all in all, im enjoying it.

I like the classic doom sfx.

The key card is technically supposed to come after you turn the power back on. That's how I usually play it.

Power > Then Keycard. If you turn the power on it's much easier to see everything in the security room.

If you're talking about the second power outage after killing the Baron, yes. I know. I specifically put waypoint markers on the keycard and reader so that people would be able to find it in the low light. (Protip: The Maintenance Keycard works on the opposite door as well, it just has no marker, because it's optional.)

As for the pickups: this is specifically why they respawn. So you're never stuck with absolutely no health or ammo. Even if you pick up everything in an area the stuff will eventually come back. The primary reason why I don't allow you to backtrack is because of the way the checkpoint system works. See, the default editor doesn't just allow you to set checkpoints. I had to build the entire checkpoint system and make it trigger resetting everything in each section by hand, and the only way for it not to break completely is to basically "wall off" the level as checkpoints are reached. It's a minor inconvenience but it was either doing it this way or making you walk through and entirely empty level from the first room to where you last died, every time you died, which is just annoying as fuck.

Also, it gives it a kind of Dark Souls type feel where you can't just kill a few demons, die and respawn and pick up where you left off. EVERYTHING resets when you die. All the monsters, pickups, etc.

Each checkpoint was meticulously planned out to cut off at a certain point that didn't feel like they were happening constantly, but also frequent enough so that you didn't feel like you lost a huge chunk of work every time you died.

Also, the red flash and the hurt sound when you take damage was custom made for the level as well.

I never intended this to be a legit "run", i was just testing the settings on my screen cap program seeing if the sound worked, but i figured, eh what the hell?
Sloppy DII m21 UVmax

Sets the bar epicly low if anyone wants to try to beat it, its a 7:57.
Like i said, i was just fucking around, not really paying attention to optimizing (which is why i killed all the lost souls).

Pretty easy map to UVmax since iirc there are no flagged secrets, but its pretty challenging combat wise.

Obv by posting this, im saying mouse look is OK, but i would say jumping/crouching/other gz features are not.
Its just for fun, its not like we are posting to speed demos archive.

Looks like fun. I've seen it on doom mod madness i think.
I played one called Verdant Citadel recently that was pretty visually amazing. It was pretty fun, i played through it twice. Just one map but its HUGE.
