#Politics
"Imagine a world with a magic artifact at the North Pole which makes it literally impossible to violate laws. The countries of the far north are infinitely orderly with no need for police at all. Go further south and the strength of the artifact decreases, until you’re at the edge of the Arctic Circle and it might be possible to violate a very minor law if your life was in danger. By the time you’re at the Equator, any kind of strong urge lets you violate most laws, and by the Tropic of Capricorn you can violate all but the most sacred laws with only a slight feeling of resistance. Finally you reach the nations of the South Pole, where the laws are enforced by nothing but a policeman’s gun." (Quoted from https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/03/19/the-dark-rule-utilitarian-argument-for-science-piracy/.)

Where would you want to live in such a world? And why?

I like the idea of every single person being implanted with a chip at the base of their skull, whereupon them doing something "unlawful" or "evil" results in immediate termination.

We do this for about 5-6 generations of humans, and then suddenly just stop implanting chips in people and turn off the ones that are. Let society go from then on and see if we revert back to the same way we were or if we become more compassionate with people.

You could do that chip things with a sentient AI that has a collection of drones that orbit the earth and do the same thing.

Who makes the laws and how?

The same as in our existing world.

A world where you can't choose whether to follow the laws or not? Sounds like Hell, i'll be in the south pole.

Plus the laws are made by people and since people are fallible there's no guarantee it would be a just law.

After all legal and illegal have nothing to do with right and wrong.

Then i would be scrambling to get as close to true south as possible.

Is that like magnetic north?

Why not the Tropic of Capricorn?
>by the Tropic of Capricorn you can violate all but the most sacred laws with only a slight feeling of resistance.

A little bit, yes.

>>353049
Because you have no explanation of what a "sacred law" is, and there is no common definition of such a thing, and there is no telling which laws would be considered "sacred" and if i would agree with them / it would be appropriate to lack the ability to violate them in 100% of situations.
Since its already been said that law making would fallow the same conditions as they currently do, then chances are, most all laws would be considered and labeled "sacred" by the law makers, thus making an ability to violate lesser laws a moot ability.

Is this some round-about casual justification for why North America, Europe and Asia are so orderly compared to Africa and South America?

I've always just figured that when its too cold to go out and commit crimes for half the year, shit just stays civil.

That's an interesting theory but the science says otherwise.

Though to be fair I am prone to thinking more murderous thoughts when it's hot out. It's just that I'm also not willing to risk moving around or going outside and feeling even hotter.

Its always too hot or too cold, its like we were never suppose to even live on the planet.

Well in order to find a planet where the temperature is consistent we'd probably have to go for one that's tidally locked with it's sun and then settle on the narrow band of land between the scorching hot light side and the perpetually frozen dark side.
Which really isn't an better.

The question boils down to, "Do you wish to trade off freedom for security?"

It also raises the question as to whether or not you believe that people follow laws simply out of fear of punishment or out of more altruistic motive.

Between the Capricorn and the south pole. Need distance from the artifact but still cold temperatures.

Also, what's to stop me from seizing power, making suicide legal and then make life illegal? Would that not compel everyone living in the arctic circle to kill themselves?
Or I could pass a 1,001 nights law, compelling every pretty young woman to sleep with me and then executing her in the morning. Or any of the many, many other things done by all the crazy-ass kings and emperors have done over the years. All it requires is one lunatic who truly believes that he is the law and the whole concept crashes and burns quite spectacularly.

So yeah, I be in the south pole in a warm fluffy parka snorting lines of recreational cocaine off the body of my recreational nuke.
