ITT: Video games that are masterpieces but mechanically/graphically have aged terribly.

GTA San Andreas is a big qualifier for this. It has a great and massive story, top-notch voice acting, lovable fun characters, lots of variety in gameplay, a distinct iconic aesthetic, a GOAT soundtrack, and is still just a boatload of fun to play, especially with all the cheat codes.

But holy shit, the aiming controls are whacky as fuck, the cover system is useless, the driving feels excessively arcadey and cars get destroyed way too fast, the character models look like ass, the difficulty spikes are insane at times (JUST FOLLOW THE DAMN TRAIN) and the general mission structure is pretty unforgiving, it lacks the GPS system that later GTA games had which makes finding exactly where you need to go often a pain in the ass, etc.

Another example of this are the first two gens of Pokemon (Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal) which are pointless to play now when the remakes are better in LITERALLY every single way. Gen 1 in particular is loaded with gamebreaking glitches (Missingno. is only the tip of the iceberg), and a lot of Pokemon's mechanics didn't become very refined until gen 3, imo at least.

Morrowind.
It's a game you would totally have enjoyed when it came out but if you didn't it'd be very hard to get into it.

It's actually funny. When this game came out I was at a game store and a mother was asking me what kind of game it was, and if it was just about drugs and killing. I told her that there is a lot of violence and drug references in the game, however the main character, CJ is actually trying to clean up his neighborhood by shutting down a corrupt cop, as well as the fact that he tries to get his friend to get off drugs. So the main character, despite the story involving shooting and stealing cars is actually trying to do some good things for his friends and neighborhood. I told her that I'm not going to sugarcoat it and say that you don't have the option to go on killing sprees and doing crimes, but it's not the main focus of the story.

She thanked me for the detailed explanation, but I don't know if she actually bought it for her kid though.

As for my contribution I would say Silent Hill 1. It's incredibly dated now and would be considered campy these days, but when it was first released that game was motherfucking horrifying. To quote my friend who finished it: "That was awesome, but you couldn't pay me to play it again."

Bioshock is slowly getting there.

Graphically it is starting to look pretty dated.

Pretty much any game from the beginnings of 3D could fall into this category.

Super Mario 64 is still a great platformer and the speedrunning community is practically built on it, but having to move the camera with buttons instead of a dedicated analog stick is rough as hell. It was obviously a necessary transition to make, but going back to it after playing the games that came after can be difficult.

And obviously the graphics, while still being charming in their own way, are pretty primitive by today's standards.

I'd say SNES's star fox still holds up pretty well.

Really?

Because ignoring how the game's just polygons, it looks incredibly slow to me. Especially compared to 64.

It's a bit slow yea, but gameplay wise I still find it very entertaining, if a bit too difficult.
And Star fox 2 was really good too, just a bit too short.

The original alone in the dark.
It was actually really fun, scary and unique for the time.
But, it looks like a polygonal nightmare and controlled like a brick slot car.
I wouldnt even totally change the aesthetics, it lent itself to the creepiness much like the noisy film in old horror movies makes it seem gritty, but, it could for sure use some polish.
But in 1992, that shit was amazing.

GTA Vice City

Game was a lot of fun and arguably started the whole speaking interaction of the character you play and other characters

Also the 80's Miami vibe is amazing and unique itself

The Scarface references were kinda cool too.

I would be inclined to agree if the game didn't run like shit. It plays at around 10 fps, but it's not uncommon that it dips lower when there's a lot happening on screen.

I wish they made a remaster of it.

Gran Turismo 2, still the greatest racing game of all time.

And the soundtrack (at least the PAL version) is 10/10

Although to be fair there have been a few people who have managed to upscale the game into 1080p and 60fps and while it doesn't look amazing it does look pretty great

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast.

Also, Planescape: Torment. I tried to play it recently, and while the story is still enjoyable, the gameplay is just so insanely dated.

Where would we put Goldeneye (N64) on the list? The game itself is quite solid but that character models are pretty awful.

Similar with the NES games. We've got several masterpieces but they were hampered by hardware limitations.

To be fair it was pretty much the 'poster boy' car of the game, may take ages and be very hard to unlock but once you do

Hooo boy time to fly

I tried upgrading it with full turbo and couldn't even steer it at any corners
Although it's so easy to slide across the walls and still maintain good speed

Postal and Postal 2.

Thankfully, Postal Redux is the HD facelift of the former. As for Postal 2, I think we really need an actual sequel...and there is one in early access right now iirc.

Note: I'm not acknowledging Postal 3, dammit.
