I wish.
But no, just exceptionally bored.

I was supposed to teach a class today, but the group cancelled and that threw my whole night off.
Then my dog decided goose shit was an exotic perfume and went a little heavy on it, so she needed a bath, and now im doing literally nothing.

I figured /ef/ could use a fresh thread, but i couldn't think of anything, so here we are haha.

I did some thinking and I think Halloween was also like... The one holiday I could actually enjoy as a kid.

I got to pretend to be someone else, and I got stuff for free, and it didn't involve extended family.

Most other holidays the fact that we were poor as dirt was heavily apparent, and I never really associated much with my family outside of my mom. I didn't hate them, they were basically just a bunch of strangers I got forced to be around for hours at a time.

I never talked to anybody outside of the initial "Oh. Look at you, you're so big!" bullshit so it was boring. So Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc... were mostly just "Ugh, well my day is wasted today."

I remember the moment I was done with the stupid "family gathering" thing altogether. It was the year during Christmas when everyone shared gifts amongst each other. And from my entire extended family combined I got a 3 dollar bag of chocolate and a generic sweatshirt that barely even fit. I'm not a greedy person in general, but I think it says a lot when the family pets get more than you do on Christmas. After that I was like, "I don't need to waste my time with this bullshit." and I've avoided every family gathering since.

I'm trying to decide what to even do about Thanksgiving this year. My dad wants me to go to his house but I've gotten to a point where I honestly just don't give a shit about the holiday so I don't feel like it's worth driving an hour to spend time with him over it. I'm so much more focused on how awesome my first Christmas with Mac will be.

I totally agree. Dude, some store around here have already begun with the decorations and shit. I feel like its a known enough fact that we all hate that shit, so they must be doing intentionally to make us mad haha.

The thing about halloween makes sense, its a day you can re invent yourself and take it out for a walk.
I just liked that i could get all dark and creepy and not come of like a weirdo. Like, it was okay to draw hellscapes and stuff in school.

Same.
Thats my absolute favorite part of Christmas. I like to get dressed up nice and go shopping on small town main streets that are all done up with lights and stuff.
But, i still think it should wait till after Thanksgiving. Though, the best way to avoid that corporate dulling down of the xmas season by starting it before Halloween is avoiding corporate places in the first place.
Whats your favorite Christmas song?
Also, i though about this in the car yesterday, and i should have asked you the other day, what is your dream?

I think the fact that you get Christmas and New Year right in a row really enhances my enjoyment of both, too. Christmas ends the year with a bang, and then you start the next one with a bang too.

>Whats your favorite Christmas song?

Either Winter Wonderland or Silver Bells. The latter is a rather nostalgic one for me. Some of my earliest Christmas memories are walking through the streets of NYC with my parents, listening to Silver Bells incessantly on repeat on a walkman. In fact, I used to listen to that song no matter what time of year it was. Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree is a bop too.

>what is your dream?

This is a really broad and kind of nondescript answer, but, to create. In more concrete terms, I'd like to follow in the footsteps of ZUN, the creator of Touhou. He singlehandedly created a massive franchise that, while originally just a video game series, now spans all forms of media. He's beholden to no man but himself, and he's created characters and stories that have touched the hearts of millions and inspired countless derivative works.

That doesn't really fully encompass the scope of "my dream" though. It's sort of a distillation of my dreams, in the sense that making games/a multimedia franchise is a synthesis of multiple things I enjoy doing and want to be good at, and of course every creative type wants to make something really good and high quality that a lot of people like.

On a smaller scale, I think it's really cool that someone like, for example Ika, can make a living off drawing furry porn.

Yup! That whole in-between time kind of feels like one long holiday. All the decorations are still up, and there are a bunch of left overs and stuff, people are still bustling around returning things haha. Its nice.
Then come the grey times, when its just cold and wintery with nothing on the horizon aside from summer haha.
>walking through the streets of NYC with my parents, listening to Silver Bells incessantly on repeat on a walkman.
Aw, that sounds like a really nice memory. Was it a walkman or a discman?
>Dream
I guess i did kind of know that.
I feel like thats something that you cant really learn in school tbh. I think you have a good base for it in your degree though, as in, you learned a lot of technical skills to help achieve that. But mostly i think stuff like that is the product of a dedicated passion project. What you have is marketable skills that you can support yourself with, and that help you work towards something greater on your own time.
Tbh, i get the impression from fallowing and talking to friends in the gaming industry, that its probably the last place you want to be if you want to make games haha.
I think that you are perfectly capable of achieving that, and it's for sure not of the table whatsoever.
The internet has opened up a world of possibilities to those who wish to market themselves directly. Its honestly amazing.

New year with no one is gonna suck. One of my favorites. Big gathering, in cold weather, near winter break in school, celebrating a pretty simply-explained and universal but significant event (time changing). Thanksgiving's also in my favorite month and celebrates a pretty straightforward thing ("we conquered; now let's eat the spoils.")

This is gonna be the most first-world nitpick in site history, but the paganism/christianity/middle-age aesthetic/rampant consumerism fusion look and feel of christmas struck me as - kind of clashy for a while.

I have a study-hall theory that the reason halloween specifically has garnered so much more appeal than all the other holidays in this culture is because it's the most overtly pagan in origin, rather than christianity or nationalism, and gives them a rare opportunity to let some primal catharsis out in a way you don't quite get with the more "institutionalized" celebrations (the only institution that's caught up with it is consumerism). It's the most "counterculture" of the mainstream holidays, sort of.

>Then come the grey times, when its just cold and wintery with nothing on the horizon aside from summer haha.
I like the first few months of a new year anyway though, even if it's just gray and wintery...I'm also a weirdo who likes February and Valentine's Day despite being chronically single, because I still enjoy romantic stuff and sort of...live vicariously through it, if that makes sense. Also, I've taken to making Valentine's Day a celebration of self-love, because dammit, permasingles ought to get to enjoy it too.

>Aw, that sounds like a really nice memory. Was it a walkman or a discman?

Walkman. Manual rewinding and all. I haven't seen a cassette in really long and I kind of miss them.

>I feel like thats something that you cant really learn in school tbh.

Which is a big part of why I feel my efforts and time in school were somewhat of a waste, not to mention the debt I've accrued. Not only college, but even high school; lots of time spent stressing over getting good grades to get into a good college that probably could've been better spent developing those skills instead.

Truthfully, I also kind of feel like even for things like programming, self-teaching was the way to go. That's sort of what I ended up doing even for my classes anyway; we'd have the weekly lessons explained to us in a manner functionally identical to reading it out of a textbook, be given an assignment, and then sent off to fill in the gaps on our own.

My current melancholia stems not from the thought that I can't achieve my dream, but more so the fact that, by setting it aside in favor of the "safer" path, I've gotten myself into a situation where it'll be harder to work towards. It's effectively doomed to be a side hustle or hobby for several years at minimum, rather than my day job. If I'd gotten serious about treating it as a day job from the get-go, I think my life would look very different now. Maybe I could've even skipped the quarter-life crisis (not the current one, the last one) and the student debt. Not that I think I'd be the next ZUN by now, of course, that's pretty lofty, but financially independent and debt free at the very least.

My birthday is in February, so i guess i cant exactly hate it haha. Then again, i already got all the good birthdays out of the way, i guess i can.
>Also, I've taken to making Valentine's Day a celebration of self-love, because dammit, permasingles ought to get to enjoy it too.
I like that sentiment haha. Honestly, one of the perks is watching your friends stress and complain about gifts and dinners and dates and the expense of it all in the days leading up to it and just getting to lol at it all.
As pathetic as it sounds, i usually have dinner with my mom that night, and its kinda nice.
>Walkman. Manual rewinding and all.
Boomer
I was thinking today actually about how much easier it was to record things with analog tech like that, you just press a button and whatever is being broadcast is yours to keep. I know you can still, but it use to be a standard and expected feature.
>The rest
I mean, i dont think you wasted your time or took the "safe" way really. You set yourself up a means with which to support yourself, you planned for the future and made sure you had more than one avenue of support and different paths to follow. Thats not wasting time, thats setting up a successful life.
Maybe it would have succeeded if you dropped out of highschool to become an indi game dev, thats for sure a possibility... But... At the same time you might still be struggling and no closer to your goal, or your degree. Then you would have had a completely different quarter life crisis haha (because, you have them no matter what).
I wouldn't regret it tbh. You didnt do it because it was safe, you did it because it was smart.
You did actually start on a shmup iirc right?
