Yeah, i found a news article about it. Sounds like it was actually undergoing renovation right now.

Good chance it was an electrical thing or something.

Or maybe the contractors just wanted a little job security haha.

Its still sad to see something as historic as this burning. It survived so much to be brought down by a careless welder or something haha.

Yeah, from what I'm reading it seems the prevailing theory is the blaze was caused by a mishap in the renovation efforts. Pretty sad regardless. I don't believe for a minute that it won't be rebuilt, but it'll be costly and take a lot of time, and obviously won't be exactly the same.

I'm glad I got to see it in person before this happened. Being inside one of these massive Gothic cathedrals is a truly otherworldly experience.

>It looks like the building is structurally saved

Will be nice if true but I doubt it. Gothic architecture isn't particularly sturdy to begin with and a good hot fire is going to play merry hell on the mortar of the walls and buttresses. If the fire was hot enough it might have also caused the stone itself to crack. That it remains standing doesn't guarantee it remains intact.

>Medieval structures that old,are usually incredibly hard to destroy.

Nope, it's just that the ones that are left tend to be literal fortresses. Gothic cathedrals are not. The defining feature of the Gothic cathedral, the flying buttress is a result of the design's inherent weakness. The attempt to maximize the size of the windows left the walls too weak to support the weight of the roof without the detached buttresses to spread the load. Furthermore, the heat of the fire will have cooked the moisture out of the limestone mortar used to fill in the gaps between the stones in the walls causing it to shrivel and crumble further weakening the structure. If the fire was hot enough and it almost certainly was, it could have caused the stones themselves to crack as moisture inside them rapidly heated to the boiling point and burst through faults. Finally, while the collapse of the roof may have saved the walls from collapsing immediately the resulting loss of structural rigidity and the concurrent reduction on the load on the walls and buttresses combined with the aforementioned issues is likely to cause the walls to collapse as the buttresses are still compensating for the load of the roof which is no longer present and the crumbling of the mortar and bursting of the stones will have weakened the interior of the walls more than the exterior so as the interior walls cool they will also contract and very likely, collapse.

Hopefully not of course. But even best case scenario we're looking at a significant and permanent reduction of the structural integrity of a building that was never overly-sturdy to begin with.

Speaking of money, one wealthy Frenchman has stepped forward with a contribution of $110 million dollars. The biggest issue now is time.

Even if money required to buy all the materials and hire qualified construction workers were gathered in time, it would most likely take a decade or more to rebuild what was damaged in the fire. Building a cathedral is far more complex than building a modern high rise building. Given the amount of structural damage, much of the original building may require total replacement once all the inspections are finished over the coming year.

I think I may be on to whomever burnt down this ancient Christian site of worship.

NOTRE Dame?

>So the symbol of Christendom was burnt down in Europe yesterday. What does it mean to Europe? Let's find out.

>Christianity a Jewish, imperialist cult.

We're only 14 seconds in and I'm already hyped!

Since this story about contributions broke early today, individuals and corporations have pledged nearly three quarters of a billion dollars (converted via Google to US currency) for the rebuilding of the cathedral. President Macron has thrown down a challenge to France to have all reconstruction finished in under five years so the world can return to Notre Dame. The money is pretty much covered.

Now it's just a matter of finding enough stone masons and other period savvy construction workers in Europe who can pull this off under this deadline.

The case of a relative pronoun is determined by its role in the dependent clause.
