This game got a lot better after I found out there was a "focus" button that slows you down.

Before that i was just like, "what masochist paired this moment acceleration with this amount of bullets on screen FUCK!" haha.

Is tofu free? I'll check that one out too then. Where do you find it? On steam?

Touhou is a series that belongs to the Shootemup (SHMUP) genre, kind of like how Street Fighter is a series in the Fighting Game genre.

Touhou is a series of games of the shoot them up genre that has delved into other genres sometimes. It's a really popular series mostly due to it's characters mostly being little anime girls.

I played a couple back when I was in high school, they are pretty hard.

I think that'd depend mostly on the difficulty of the game.
There are some shoot them ups that couldn't be considered bullet hells.

Touhou isn't technically free, but 99% of western players pirate the games as importing them is prohibitively expensive and ZUN has hinted he doesn't really care because of the limited availability.

Someday I will buy ZUN a gallon of beer for each game of his that I pirated. And a liter of fine junmai if he's into sake.

Two of the official games (Hidden Star in Four Seasons and Violet Detector) are on Steam, but I would not recommend either of those for your first Touhou game, because HSiFS is very gimmicky and VD is the worst thing ZUN has put out since the 90's.

I would recommend starting with Touhou 6, 7, or 8 -- especially 7. You can get them from here:
https://moriyashrine.org/files/category/6-classic-era-th6-th95/

And all the other official releases are available there as well.

If you get issues like input lag, the game running at 800fps, or want to play windowed at a custom resolution, you'll also want the VSync patch, which you can obtain here:
https://maribelhearn.github.io/tools

There are also a variety of practice tools on that page, it's run by a good friend of mine.

Starshine!Laura/wmXM (ID: 5a7896)Country code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 1  240763

I personally would actually recommend starting with Touhou 4, Lotus Land Story, but you'll need a PC98 emulator for that, and those will require a bit of setup and configuration to run correctly. Next time I'm on my laptop (we're driving back from the ski trip right now) I can upload my Neko Project 2 config file.

Starshine!Laura/wmXM (ID: 5a7896)Country code: ponychan.png, country type: customflag, valid: 1  240770

I kind of want to write a review/recommendation of every Touhou game, but I'll give myself carpal tunnel trying to do that on my phone...

>How is that Jigoku game?

At first it was hell. The movement acceleration was wayyyy to much for the amount of precision required. But then i found out there was a "focus" button that slows you down, and its a lot more fair, though still pretty challenging.

Its the weebiest thing i have experienced in a while. The story is... Lacking, and i wish they used jet fighters instead of little girls shooting crap out of there heads.. But that all just personal taste, games still fun haha.

If you want ships instead of girls, you'll probably want Cave, Raizing, or Psikyo games. (Or Toaplan if you wanna go real old school.) Those you'll have to emulate except the small handful of Cave games which are on Steam (DeathSmiles, DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu, and Mushihimesama). I can give you an Internet Archive link to procure the ROMs later, but in the meantime you'll want to download MAME so you can run them.

Or if you don't mind weeby games with girls, play Touhou!

A poster bought the game for me last December.

It is called Enter the Gungeon.

I am playing it right now.

It is a pixel-art / bullet hell game.

It is totally worth it. I have played it 88 hours according to Steam and it is still fun. Unfortunately, an important percentage of people never finish it, because it is kinda difficult.

It is.

It is full of little references to other video games, like Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Half Life, Star Wars, Wolfenstein.

You can use the mega-hand of megaman or the Combine assault rifle from Half life (if you find them)

^_^

And the Story is good imo.

Risotto just requires you keep an eye on it in the pan and keep it moving as to not brown and/or burn the rice.
At most, it should take 30 minutes.
In that time, you have more then enough time to properly sear and cook the scallops, and even make a nice sauteed vegetable on the side.

It's all about prep and precision.

When I cook, I do it for the knowledge of how to make something, and to help introduce myself to something new before going out to try it elsewhere.

I've made my own lamb chops, veal, seafood of all kinds, sushi, sashimi, burgers, hotdogs/sausages, broken down multiple chickens, pizza, pies and desserts, and so much more that if I were to list them all I'd be here for at least another 30 minutes typing away.

>Seems like too much effort

Yes, it takes effort. But in my opinion the difficulty curve of EtG is acceptable, you are going to die maybe ten times in the first level but once you get the rhythm the hours of fun start.

Besides, without difficulty, you would not feel the emotion while dodging the bullets of one of the final bosses whom took you one hour to reach and the victory feeling once it is defeated!

But it is okey if you changed your mind ^_^

I mean they taste like sausages, but they're thinner so I call them hotdogs.

It's a lot of grinding and getting the spices right, but it's worth it when I can make something like 2 dozen ahead of time.

Oh ha ha, go fuck yourself.

Usually a form of collagen casing.

Though, I did try using natural casing, since it adds some snap to the sausage... but it just ended up all fucked up and broken when I tried to cook it.

Still tasted good

Heyyy im at work, i read it quick.

But yeah iv done natural casings and they can be a bitch. I think you can soak them in ice water and they are easier to pack because of shrinkage. They do add a good snap though, we have a local brand called saugy's that has the best snap in a hotdog that I've had.

I have only done breakfast sausage from scratch, i used an icing dispenser.

Someday, I'd like to go for a 2-ALL of DDP.

I've already done 1-ALL:
DoDonPachi (怒首領蜂) 1-ALL Clear (C-L)

But the second loop is where this game really goes from a challenging shmup to balls to the wall hard.

For the time being though, I've got my sights set on a God Mode clear of Mushihimesama Futari Black Label.

1-ALL, 2-ALL, etc., refer to how many "loops" of the game are cleared without using continues. In DoDonPachi, there are two loops, though to access the second loop you have to meet certain requirements in the first. Basically, you play through the game again, but it's way harder the second time around.

God Mode is the highest difficulty in Mushihimesama Futari Black Label, and will be my hardest arcade clear once I pull it off. Although the Ultra Mode found in the 1.5 version of the game is much harder.

>Different game?

Ye. Here's God Mode from Black Label:
Mushihimesama Futari Black Label - God Mode - 5.646.696.715 - Reco
and Ultra Mode from 1.5:
虫姫さまふたり ~ Mushihimesama Futari - Ultra Mode ALL Clear

Oh, and I use keyboard; just what I'm used to since I started with Touhou, like most western shmuppers. Apparently Japanese players like to use a Saturn pad, I'll probably pick up a USB Saturn pad at some point or another.

There's an arcade just outside of Denver that has Mushihimesama Futari Black Label and DoDonPachi DaiOuJou which I'm visiting in a week; pretty excited about that, both of those games are quite rare to find in the wild outside of Japan.

Well, just keep in mind that fullauto does become standard/default in Cave's later games, so if you do feel like foregoing the fatigue, there's no shame in that.

Alcohol has always had a funny effect on game for me. There are for sure peaks and valleys. I get worse as i get buzzed, then as i progress to legit "drunk" i get better, and more confidence... once your in that like "fuzzy glo" part of being drunk is the peak... then it just drops like a rock.

This also is the case for games like horse shoes, sack toss and beerpong.

I'm not gonna be disappointed if I don't clear or anything. But part of the fun of these games for me is setting a goal and achieving it. For DOJ I actually set out to get my first 1-ALL on the harder White Label version of the game rather than Black Label. It was tough, and the run that cleared was really down to wire (no lives or bombs remaining at the final pattern, heart thumping, breath held, seconds away from either a clear or a gameover, forced to dodge one of the hardest patterns the first loop has to offer...), but watching that giant robot bee finally explode was so god damn satisfying. I like to be good enough at my games that I can comfortably clear them, and the only thing at stake is my score, but there's definitely a lot to be said for the thrill of being in the final stretches of a run and knowing you're not gonna make it unless you pull off something really clutch. It might sound lame to be so invested in a game...but moments like that make me feel so alive.

If DoDonPachi invented the bullet hell subgenre, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou perfected it. It's hard to put into words my love for this game, and I know I'm far from alone in considering it a magnum opus of bullet hell. I can't call it "perfect", because there are some technical flaws, and some argue the True Final Boss is a design flaw (because he's insanely fucking difficult to the point of being considered humanly impossible to defeat without bombing or dying; I disagree that this is a flaw, because Hibachi is legendary specifically because of the absurd difficulty), but it's undeniably one of Cave's most iconic games, and one of the most iconic games of the genre.

Your at that level of loving something where its fun to just read you fawn over it haha.

I get that, the challenge is part of the experience. Then do it! Go for gold!

Also, i get more references now Fan 'Stumes 2017

The second loop is so fucked lol

Damn. I havent gotten that far yet haha.

Your freaking awesome. Though, i will say, this game has one of the most legit hitboxes of any shoot em up i've ever played.

To the point where i keep giving up only to realize that its on the forgiving side of "pixel perfect" and im still alive (but then get a direct hit because i stopped moving haha).

I think you're going to give that cabinet a hell of a fight!

Thanks! Although, there might be two monkey wrenches in my plan now...it seems I might not be going to Denver this weekend, and this just happened.
>pic

So I might have to shift my focus to scoring Touhou 12 for the time being, as I told a friend I was going to score it with him when the scoring DRC comes up.

>Though, i will say, this game has one of the most legit hitboxes of any shoot em up i've ever played.

That was one of DDP's major innovations! Smaller hitboxes mean you can make the patterns crazier. And they get even smaller; DDP hitboxes are actually considered big compared to some of their later games. Particularly

Going pretty well so far. I should be getting over 10k graze on this, but it's only my second timeout.

Aww

For sure keep your word to a friend. Is it like a 2 player thing?

>That was one of DDP's major innovations! Smaller hitboxes mean you can make the patterns crazier.

Yeah i noticed only the cockpit seems to be a hitbox as bullets seem to be able to pass over the wings. I can see how some would think thats kinda lame, as your whole avatar should take a hit, but nuts to those people, this is way more fun!
>DDP hitboxes are actually considered big compared to some of their later games.
Really? Once i beat this one ill have to check those out.

Okay... what the hell is even going on here? haha.

I still "can" technically, but I would have to drive there and back myself, so I might as well just wait until one of the still-pretty-soon days where I go to Denver for um, other reasons.

>For sure keep your word to a friend. Is it like a 2 player thing?

DRC stands for Dodging Rain Competition, it's essentially an organized thing where you sign up for various categories and are paired up with someone who signed up for the same category. Usually there are both scoring and survival categories (the latter of which, your score is calculated based on how many lives you lost and how many bombs you used, so a "perfect" score is a no miss no bomb run), but this is a smaller scoring-only event.

>I can see how some would think thats kinda lame, as your whole avatar should take a hit, but nuts to those people, this is way more fun!

Well, if your entire sprite were a hitbox, some patterns would be straight up impossible to dodge. It does give you more wiggle room, yes, but it also allows the game to demand higher precision out of you. Plus, if hitboxes = sprites, grazing in Touhou games wouldn't be possible, which brings me to...

>Okay... what the hell is even going on here? haha.

This is a supergraze. In Touhou games, when your sprite touches a bullet's sprite, that's called "graze", and it's usually tied to score in some way. See how there are two numbers in the HUD going up, one of which starts at 0 and the other of which starts at 20k? The one starting at 20k is point item value, the smaller one is the graze. I'm milking that pattern for graze to raise my point item value.

That one's not even the coolest supergraze in the game; this one is. Though this one, I'm for sure not going to do in runs for DRC. It's considered superfluous unless you're going for 2.5 billion, and I don't even have 1 billion yet (my high score shows 2.6 billion because I have someone else's scorefile). And it's way too risky to be worth it just yet.

>Really? Once i beat this one ill have to check those out.

Also, the game in my webm isn't the one you're playing, it's DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, the "third" DoDonPachi game and "fourth" DonPachi game. (But nobody plays DDP 2, because it's not made by Cave and is considered pretty bad; I gave it a chance and it's not horrible, but geez, it's definitely not up to Cave's standards. DOJ is the de facto second DoDonPachi game, the true successor.)

See, now thats the kind of thing you say when you want questions.

>DRC stands for Dodging Rain Competition...

Ah gotcha, so its more of a "ill do it if you do" kinda thing?
>Well, if your entire sprite were a hitbox, some patterns would be straight up impossible to dodge.
I could see annoying people making the argument "then the patterns should be changed" but i agree, its much more fun the way it is, and honestly, shoot em ups aren't even eluding to having a basis in reality sooo... shut up phantom argument in my head... guy!

Geez... there is so much. Is it okay that i just like making the stuff ker-splode?

>Also, the game in my webm isn't the one you're playing

Thanks professor science...

>it's DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, the "third" DoDonPachi game and "fourth" DonPachi game.

Ohhhhhh.... i thought you meant in the last 2 webms. Sure i could have just gone back and corrected my mistake and looked like less of a fool, but i liked that "professor science" line haha.
