Two shit games that are long past their expiration date, by two evil companies with recent PR disasters, have announced that two longtime characters have been rewritten as homosexuals.

Is this a genuine attempt at being inclusive, or merely a distraction from the real issues?

I don't think these characters were decidedly straight to begin with, so does it really count as rewriting?
But then I don't really know their lore, I'm just guessing.

What are the PR disasters?

Blizzard's is probably Diablo Immortal.

I don't even know who the Drow-looking fantasy motherfucker even is.

Oh yeah, that one counts I guess.

It's Varus dude, go watch some League of Legos.
Then what was Riot Games' disaster?

>what was Riot's PR disaster

IIRC, didn't they have something about like, sexual harassment of the few females in the workplace?

Also, I'd consider LoL to be a pretty big disaster so I mean...

Oh, oh. I had heard about character designs being affected by the CEO, but not this.

However... They have a nice office building though.

They weren't gay to begin with either. You're definitely not wrong, but they were originally written as neutral/ambiguous because it served a more general purpose, people could think of them as any sexuality they wanted. By specifically taking existing characters that people already like, in games where lore and sexuality really aren't the focus, and saying "these are the gay characters now," we should be asking why.

The benefits are obvious. It gets people talking about the games again, distracts from other issues within the games (and the companies in this case), generates new interest in the characters from a previously untapped demographic, and they get to virtue signal about how tolerant and inclusive they are while sweeping every other benefit under the rug. The question is, should we believe them when they tell us how tolerant and inclusive they are, or should the predictable attention they're generating for themselves call their motives into question?

While I do usually agree it's dumb to bring sexuality into a story like this, because it might feel forced since the sexuality is not relevant to the game, Riot Games' characters are at times motivated by love. Thus it's not really a big stretch when we have a love interest situation in yet another story of a character, since the love interest theme has been used before in this game.

It still does leave a bad taste sometimes, simply because we are so used to seeing companies shoehorn LGTBQ+ representation into videogames in this way. But that also means we're prone to assuming every character of that representation is there merely for an agenda, which itself is a dangerous pitfall.

...Soldier 76 just seemed to have nothing at all to do with sexuality though, which feels very odd if they did give him such a story out of nowhere. At least Riot has the benefit of being known for retconning their characters entirely, so people are used to seeing characters have evolving or completely changing stories.

Wordsalad.

My problem is specifically with the retcon aspect of announcing a character's previously ambiguous and irrelevant sexuality. If Varus or Soldier 76 or Tracer was gay from the moment they came out, that would actually be really cool. I wouldn't expect a big company to be ahead of the curve on representation like that, it would feel like a simple establishment of the existence of homosexuality in your universe. It would be even ballsier and more commendable if they could pull off a good story where they deal with the realistic consequences of homosexuality within their setting, but that's too much to ask from either of these games.

Likewise, I would have no problem with Dumbledore being gay if he told a story in one of the books about a gay ex-lover or whatever. But to have the author come out later and say "oh by the way, this changes nothing, but Dumbledore was gay. Aren't I just so progressive?" I'm like fuck you bitch, most lgbt folks are smart enough to see right through your market-tested neolib pandering. You're trying to appeal to an audience without doing anything to deserve it, and you're gonna pat yourself on the back for it?

For me, it's okay for a character to be ambiguous in the beginning and later have its sexuality revealed. However only if it's relevant to how the character functions or it's relevant to what motivates the character to do what it does in the videogame.

Disclaimer: CBA to find the source material on Varus and Soldier76 that makes them gay atm.

The thing that bothered me about Dumbledore wasn't that he was retconned later to be gay though, it was that he was... simply revealed by the author that he is. He didn't have a story arc about it, and nothing in the Harry Potter stories (afaik) had anything to do with Dumbledore's sexuality. Geeuugh we're talking about an old guy's sexuality.
It's just dumb when the writer or a narrator type, somebody outside of the story reveals the character's sexuality like that and said information is just not important to know at all. I mean knowing it changes our perspective on nothing in terms of the story, so it's useless information. THAT'S when it is easiest to say the reveal is bullshit.

I agree that you have more evidence to make this accusation in the case of a finished book series than you do with an evolving videogame narrative, learning more about characters over time is to be expected. I can't say for sure what these company's motivations are, but it really feels like they're revealing a character to be gay as a distraction from other issues, and I don't think this kind of trickle-down band-aid representation is doing anything to promote tolerance. Its getting people talking about their games, which makes them money, but its not like they're doing any favors for videogame writers trying to get a game with a gay protagonist published.

Yeah well, businesses don't have morals. At least they normally don't. So they just do what gets the mouses clicking and wallets paying.
If the writers can pull the story changes off in a believable way, that's all I ask myself.

I don’t play or plan to play Overwatch...so I can’t comment on soldier 76.

I have no problem with this. Let the fags pay for shitty games. If it means so much to them that they have gays in their game. For one I always thought overwatch was gay without any rewrite to begin with. As fort the other one, I have never heard of it so it is not important.

I'll go with distraction from the real issues.

Remember when Blizzard declared that Tracer was a lesbian? I didn't until I had to recall that obscure fact about a video game I have zero emotional investment in.

The normies who spend hundreds of dollars on shit AAA game titles aren't falling for the breads and circuses of the game publishers anymore. You must have an incredibly shit life if you care more about gays in video games as promoting inclusion than the dumpster fires the games have become.

Apparently, this was mostly done to try to make a smokescrean over their fake girl pro-player issue they had. Or, at least, the timing is interesting.
I missed most the stuff, but, basically, a random player suddenly showed up in the high ranking stuffs, and quickly got a team, which made folk question the lot. People were quickly called sexist for daring to doubt a woman, and, there was a bit of a fiasco. Don't know exactly what happened, but, apparently, Blizard had known before shit hit the fan.

I don't play Overwatch, though, so, most all this is second hand from someone who does.

Yeah, I heard about this. It's hilarious, game news sites are trying to frame this as somehow still being proof that women have it harder in pro gaming circles (Because of the justified suspicions - despite the fact that the player in question proved that teams will hire you as a female player, even if you were completely out of consideration as a male player), or going with the old "It started a discussion" line.

Meanwhile, players are dismissing this because the guy said it was a social experiment, even though this is one of the few times where that line was actually justified in its use, because he genuinely was trying to figure out if he would be treated any differently as a female.

Will the gay/lesbian game play look any better on a new Radeon VII card?

Just wondering. Given all the complaints about how old some game engines are, what's the point of a new card that only demonstrates how lackluster current AAA game titles are?
