How much rape is too much? Anonymous (ID: 2010f2)Country code: us, country type: geoip, valid:   155160

Suppose that your local municipal government is considering increasing the size of the police budget to combat rape, and that this increase would increase your tax liability by $100/year. Would opposing this measure necessarily imply that the existing amount of rape is acceptable in some sense?

Do you get my point here? I think it's a silly thing to assert that just because people don't want to give more of their money towards any given thing, means they think how much of it there is is acceptable. The only "logic" there would be is accusations of "hypocrisy" but this kind of thing could be applied to so many things so sweepingly that it is pretty much redundant.

It's the police/crime equivalent of saying "Apple uses child labor so if you buy an iPhone you support child labor."

Also:

>trusting cops to enforce the law properly

Why is that? If you choose not to devote resources to solving a problem, doesn't that mean, in some sense, that you have accepted the status quo?

There's a difference between supporting something and merely accepting it.

Think about this logically:

You're going to pay an extra $100 to stop rape specifically. How? Are you going to hire officers that are specifically JUST there to prevent rape?

If there is a shooting are they going to be like, "Sorry, I only get paid to stop rape."? It makes no sense how an extra $100 of police funding will be used specifically to prevent one particular type of crime.

It's impractical.

>If there is a shooting are they going to be like, "Sorry, I only get paid to stop rape."?
Well, the type of people who typically commit murder are also the type of people who wouldn't think twice about committing rape if they wanted some fuck. So neutralizing murderers would, statistically, also be likely to reduce the rape rate.

Well, its $100 per person. So say its a town of 10k people... Thats 1 million dollars. Thats 23.5 extra cops on the beat.

23 extra cops to cover shifts cant hurt.

Okay so the $100 would be to increase police effectiveness across the board. Not 'prevent rape'.

This is basically a ploy used to guilt trip people into giving over money because they don't want to be 'That guy that wouldn't help rape victims.'

Oh yeah, I understand that. I'm saying this has nothing to do with rape and everything to do with using psychology to guilt people into doing something they otherwise wouldn't do.

It's a ploy. There is no practical way that you can use $100 to specifically 'prevent rape'. You can use $100 to bolster the police force, which in turn would help fight rape amongst a lot of other things, but singling out rape in particular just so you can accuse everyone who wasn't on board of 'supporting rape culture' is disingenuous.

It is a hypothetical question.

But you are right, in reality that is exactly how they justify budget increases. Find a problem that sounds extra spooky and say they are going to "solve" it. If only they had more money!

It'd be better if you gave that money towards treatment of rape victims, as people have said in this thread giving money to the police "to prevent rape" wouldn't make sense.

Really any crime cant be "prevented" by police, but thats not their job, their job is to solve crimes, not prevent them.

Genetically alter the upper body strength of the female stock. Male physiology is the true agent of rape, and the reason strong men can also get away with raping weak men, while the weak men still shoulder the collective male blame for being rapists.

Like, I get that deliberately weakening your entire male stock could cause national security problems. Just build a tougher female and we'll have the best of both worlds.

>Would opposing this measure necessarily imply that the existing amount of rape is acceptable in some sense?

Not necessarily, no. You can condemn rape without assuming that this will solve the issue. Perhaps the local police force is at a hard limit in terms of dealing with rape that won't be solved with more resources.
