Oh, I can relate this to a little story from my personal life. At the beginning of 2011, my parents took some time apart. And by time apart, I mean that my father rented an apartment and bought furniture for it. Now, you might think my mom was an idiot for not catching onto something being wrong at this point. And you wouldn't be wrong. But moving on.
So, that continued for a while. Eventually, my mom found out that my dad had someone else there. An extra toothbrush and whatnot. But still, it took another month or so before she literally caught him in bed with another woman because my dad was supposed to come pick me up for something, and didn't. Why didn't my dad just divorce my mom? Why didn't that woman just divorce her husband? Hard to say, but I suspect it's the same mentality that lead to this sort of thing. They just have something broken in their heads, some immense amount of hubris that leads them to believe that they can get away with the most ass-obvious shit you could possibly imagine.
To this day, my dear father still believes that he's the victim, still claims that he only slept with her that one time that he got caught, still believes that the only reason my sister won't talk to him is because my mother poisoned my sister against him, and so on. Some people are just capable of making a complete break from reality if they want it bad enough. Of course, that break only exists in their own heads, but I guarantee you that this guy thinks he's the victim in all of it.
