We grew up together. A bunch of us lived in the same neighborhood or the surrounding ones and we'd always do the neighborhood football/baseball game or get into retarded shenanigans. He was a big sports guy, I wasn't, but he was the kind to take the less sporty types and encourage them instead of bitching when they got sorted onto his team. When we were in school he was really more of the "cool" crowd and I wasn't quite as much, but he was one of those who would embrace whoever of my more nerdy friends I brought along with me without giving them shit or making fun of them or anything despite the social flak you could get just for being around such people. A good guy, everyone's friend kind of dude. Always smiling, never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Religious guy too, under the goofy shit. If there's a just God he's got a place for him. He deserves that much at least for how much effort he put into it.

i always hear people tells others to "just quit and man up!"

There is a lot of stigma associated with it, so people just try to deal with it themselves rather than try to get help, esp if its a place that still has criminal penalties for it.
Like, no one wants to admit they are "committing crime" esp people who are really decent people who just made a mistake, so they just hole up and hide it, which just makes them more depressed and in turn, harder to get away from it, and it becomes cyclic.
Obviously thats not the "this is how it happens in every case" but i have seen it happen that way, esp with people who are otherwise good hard working folk. They dont want to come off as "junkies" or something.

I'm supposed to drive a woman to rehab on Monday.

My father struggled with alcoholism for the last five years or so, and had been in and out of rehab. I guess I pitied him, but our relationship had soured quite a lot so when he killed himself over the summer, it didn't hit me as hard as it hit my sister, as bad as that probably sounds.
I realize that he was a very flawed person in his own way and was obviously dealing with a lot of issues, but he had alienated me for a long time for reasons that aren't really worth getting into (it's not particularly scandalous, just personal stuff), and he left a huge fucking mess for the rest of us to clean up, and I don't mean the blood and brains
