I'm going to have to say this:
StarCraft - OST

Not only because it sounds good, but because of the fact that the timing of the music is actually set to frame a typical game. This was made before games had the abiltity to change music on the fly depending on what was happening in the game, so when they crafted the soundtrack for this game, they timed the pacing based on the general times when action would pick up.

If you listen to most of the race music you'll notice it's pretty chill and calm until about 40 seconds in, which is when you only have your first workers. Then it starts to pick up a bit as your first buildings get constructed and generally first contact with the enemy is going to occur. Then it just does a steady pump as your forces build until it breaks into a full combat routine, which lasts about a minute or so before dying down again.

Essentially, the soundtrack is built around the flow of the game and I thought that was pretty amazing.

There were a decent amount of games before StarCraft that had adaptive music. I remember Ultima Underworld and System Shock using adaptive music quite a bit, but I know the LucasArts adventures also had adaptive soundtracks.

A million times yes.
This song specifically was my favorite.
StarCraft - Terran Theme 3 and a good example of what you are talking about i think.

SCII couldnt live up haha, the best choice blizzard ever made was putting the old starcraft music as an option in starcraft 2. Until they did that, i had to run a youtube playlist of the old music on loop if i wanted to play well.

Is it weird that i can hear the SCVs harvesting minerals when i listen to this? haha.

>>1954
I think she means it was static music that was just composed in a way that it was naturally adaptive.

Dunno how stable any of the N64 emulators are in netplay. Dolphin is kind of a special case.
Also, as far as I know there was a fork of PCSX2 that supported netplay, but only for a few select fighting games, so the PS2 version is out.

Chex Quest is kind of my range of Not Serious too. Like you're a Cereal Man with a spoon you can upgrade to a spork fighting evil boogers that look like Nickelodeon Slime. But also its a Serious Space Military Operation.

You might also like The Adventures of Square and Rise of the Wool Ball. They're both silly Doom engine games.

They have standalone versions as well, so you can just download and play. Actually, that reminds me, there's also a standalone version of Chex Quest 3: http://www.chucktropolis.com/gamers.htm

Oh Thanks, that would probably be easier even though I just downloaded the zip for gzdoom anyways.

Though I do have to say, Rise of the Wool Ball looks a little more like Wolf-enstein to me. ;3

>Rise of the Wool Ball looks a little more like Wolf-enstein to me.
That's kind of the intention, though it's a bit more Rise of the Triad inspired than Wolf3D, which Shadow of the Wool Ball took most of its inspiration from. Rise of the Triad was a game that was originally developed as Wolfenstein 3D Part 2, but sometime during development id revoked the license from Apogee, as they didn't want it competing with their own Doom. Due to them no longer having the license, they went absolutely crazy with the game, and I feel like it turned out pretty well.

Should have been wolves. Just for the pun.

Also uh, I guess I'll link New Sakura Wars OST - 17 Miracle Bell (Taisho 29th Edition) (Karaoke) since it was one of the things that didn't make me nostalgic in a wistfully gloomy way about the newest Sakura Wars game.

Also Tite Kubo is shit at character designs compared to Kōsuke Fujishima more down to earth and classy designs.

The new one plays fun? Also if you get the Retro Costume DLC or whatever you don't have to worry to much about the weirdly dumb or horny designs.

It really is relatable since the whole story is basically this weird reverse of the original while also having all the fans of the Flower Revue going "Wow, things have fallen so far since the original days" and then later on are like "Well, I guess they're okay in their own way".

Its definitely one of those things where I feel sort of bad for the developers because I can tell that they really really want to make the series relevant again by having Hot Artists just do a bunch of different guest designs that don't match up well with each other and other stuff...

Its just way more "Ridiculous Anime" about it, like everyone is weird anime melodramatic tropes and stuff.

Like I really liked the new game sort of but also was constantly mad about it. Very complicated feelings.

Really aught to try and figure out a way to play the earlier ones translated instead of just marathoning most of the anime over and over again every so often.

Oddly enough apparently the New Sakura Wars anime is both a sequel but also retcons weird aspects of the game's story to kind of just uh...redo the story but in a way that isn't so weird and Obvious Cliches that make it seem more dated than the things where the cliches were from (most of which was just things that were basically done in older Sakura Wars stuff too?)

I dunno, maybe I'm just too old for New Animeisms? Even if the Action Platformer gameplay was not bad...and some of it almost had charm eventually. Gonna beat the rest of the endings at some point, even if the art choices and various other things get in the way of what could have been a really compelling fresh start if it had gone in less "characters in modern anime/video games have to act really quirky or mood swingy because how else would you know what their character type is otherwise" ways.

Tbf, the story for the game made very little sense and was mostly there for the "Obviously Bad Rich Guy Who is Basically Just The Badguy from Sakura Wars The Movie again" to force a Tournament Arc so they could get some Extra Teams with Different Guest Character Designers For Each Team?

Which was also where the gameplay suffered because of the Competitive Time Attack Nonsense that was very different than the rest of the battles in the game?

I don't know, still have to watch the anime to see which is better but what I've heard about it makes it sound more compelling character wise, even for the "villain" side....and otherwise sounds a lot like it covers the same sorts of character arcs and stuff the game did anyways? At least from what I've heard the villain has a reason beyond "I'm a bad guy who wants to ruin everything cause I'm badguy, and people don't catch on or go against me because I'm somehow funding the whole thing anyways even though most of the groups don't even need the funding anyways"

Story for the game is so weird but also so blatant especially if you know any Sakura Wars at all cause the early stuff established a lot of the tropes in a lot of games that we just accept as normal now, except in a way I'm pretty sure still holds up, instead of a way that seems like it's trying to remind people of the glory days it doesn't quite reach because it isn't actually confident in what its trying to sell.

Which is probably bad news for any game series, even if its not one that already fell to obscurity for years once.

Yeah, and...I sort of like most of the main characters in the new one as long as I swap out their costumes to older designs and ignore their mismatched pleather battle uniforms.

One of them is pretty ugh to me on a lot of levels and I still don't like her, but the rest have some charm to them despite being a little too "Over the top" at whatever archetype they're supposed to be.

It just also never reaches the level of classiness I feel like the original stuff had, nor the sureness about what it's identity even is. Also when he's not acting like a Chuunibyou, the main dude is maybe too cool?

Like they looked at V and went "This wasn't successful because the Main Character was a Wimpy Loser and too many of the female characters were Competent at both sides of their jobs."...and made the new MC look super cool and instantly a top tier Koubu pilot despite never having actually used one before....and all the rest of the team is completely incompetent at the acting side and for the most part the Koubu side too (except for the superstar elite person they scout just a bit later to try and save the team and their plays with her star power and skills). So many ways in which it feels like a total reversal of the first story while also trying to play off of the first Sakura Wars...

Similar I guess to Ghostbusters 2016 where there's a generational shift in what Hollywood thinks is a Comedy movie and it ends up being Basically Every Other Melissa McCarthy movie except also Ghostbusters with a ton of super obscure reference jokes that the only people who will catch are the people they already pissed off to the point of them saying they were boycotting the film?

I dunno, hoping it did well enough that they get another try at Sakura Wars that's maybe allowed to be a bit more grounded and well thought out instead of just trying to figure out what might potentially maybe hook the kiddies enough that it can have a future. Like maybe let the Valkyria Chronicles team have a shot at it next? Since at least that series feels like it has a bit more of the Sakura Wars DNA to it.

Anyways gotta sleep, but I'm glad that it seems like I'll be able to get the first game working, instead of having to try and fumble through translating the GBA alternate retellings or whatever they were.

Probably because you clicked on that song I linked on that other thread and it's composed by the same composer; Tim Follin
He is a veritable wizard of chiptunes.

Nes: Silver Surfer Soundtrack

Although all the games he composes the soundtrack to inevitably end up on an AVGN episode.

There's an old PC game called Stellar 7 which had a really cool soundtrack. It was ported onto CD in the early 90s from a DOS game which had a stripped down sound blaster OST. The sound designer took those beeps and bloops and made them spacey and impressionistic. Hard to find.

Needs more woodblock!

Castlevania 4 - Bloody Tears (Super Nintendo)
Best version of Bloody Tears.
But the whole game's soundtrack is absolutely bangin. Especially when you consider that it was (practically) a launch title in the west and thus very early work on the SNES soundchip.
