>You: .... What about the bass?

>Stranger: there is no bass in rock music

>You: Yeah there is. xD

>Stranger: well thats a bass guitar, its like a electric guitar but quieter. other wise yeah no bass. xP

>You: I know what a bass guitar is.

It is a resuscitated corpse that drags on and on only to defecate and rot, leathery skin sheathing blood and bones but unable to conceal the frail form of it's foundation, it walks in circles and draws a crowd of sympathy and horror, the crowd is a sadistic mass not willing to look away and only to look on. It is sick, it is taking all of music down with it, it is parasitic and shares the spirit of dead man clinging selfishly and in desperation for a last gasp, a self perpetuated torment. Rock music is an actor and a corporate man selling styrofoam cups at a wake.

Normally, due to personally enjoying rock, I'd just have my jimmies slightly rustled. But after studying the history of music for the past week, I just want to say rock music is never going to die due to being synonymous with rebellion since the 70's.

I do enjoy rock music from time to time as well, but I'm not going to fool myself.

It was the rebellion OF 60s/70s. Connecting rock music nowadays with any kind of rebellion is ridiculous.

And the classic approach rock is dead creation-wise. It's the same thing as big band music, but many people refuse to see it.

By definition, ALL music has, in some way or another, pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, and texture.

Yeah but it was the same themes from those decades that pretty much defined what rock was about; politics, social changes, non-conformism, etc. Problems we will always have, which is why I said rock will never die.

I do agree that the classic approach of rock is dead. But the same thing happens to all genres of music, manestream tastes get bored after a couple of years and want something new, so the music genre evolves to match those tastes.

Oh, come on. Sure, rock music is corporatized, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad. You could make the same argument about modern soul music, and there's still plenty of innovative stuff coming out of that scene.

Yeah, the fans are insular and often dumb. But if the past five to ten years are anything to go by, things are going to change. There's so much exposure to all sorts of kinds of music now that it's only so long before it percolates into popular culture and people stop caring about "rock", at least as we know it.

Really? If I recall correctly, rock lyrics, just like lyrics of almost any genre, could be about anything and don't focus on any specific topic. There's much more lovesongs than social/political stuff.
Also, considering that there are so rebellious and borderline genres nowadays, rock has become rather a synonym of conformism (it's mostly music kids inherit after their parents)

Of course we do have some new fields of rock that are doing well. Avant-garde will always find something new, we have the high-tier indie rock and math rock like Modest Mouse or Unwound... but I thought we were discussing rock at its purest form, like Led Zep. Imagine them starting as a band today.

Of course music, no matter the genre, can be about anything, but each genre does have it own niche themes.
I'm not too sure I follow your statement that there are other rebellious/borderline genres though; I've never heard of someone saying they listen to country or rap because it makes them feel rebellious for example.

I was just talking about rock in general though. There's no way Led Zepplin would be famous if they came out now.

Have you heard Those Poor Bastards? You have some dark, psychedelic, death-themed lyrics there, and it's country music.
Have you heard RATM? Hard to find anything more angsty and rebellious, and yeah, it's classic rapcore. (or maybe you have in mind "rap" as hip-hop music. There would be something there too)

And really, rock'n'roll today is music for a glass of wine. Compare it to noizecore, screamo, black metal, grindcore.

Rock in general is too wide to have any specific discussion about it. On one hand, during the 70s we had a wave of progrock, then new wave in the 80s. On the other hand, there was drugged glam and rebellious punk, then some poor attempts to go back to the rebellion via grunge.
I, personally, don't see rock as a genre, it's a huge cluster of genres. "Rock" means nothing, like "electronic music". You could as well say just "music".

Like I said, whatever music genre you're in, the song can be about anything, but they have niche themes.

You could say the same about any genre of music though, if you're talking about jazz you could mean pure jazz from when it originated in the late 1800's, swing jazz from the 30's, then there's also jazz rap and jazz rock. etc.

Hip Hop currently is putting out a lot more rebellious stuff than rock I think. Name a few recent rock albums that revolve around rebellious themes. And I mean rebellious as in 2011-2012, because I can name multiple hip hop albums like that.

Horrorcore isn't about angsty rebellion, it's mostly dark and demonic stuff...

If you want rebellious themed rock, just look at Megadeth. They've always had rebellious and political themes and recently released their 13th album. There's also Warbringer's Worlds Torn Asunder, Ministry's 99%ers, and Chthonic's Takasago Army

And again, I'm not saying rap/hip hop isn't rebellious, I'm saying it isn't known for attracting people because it makes them feel rebellious like with rock.

It hurts me to see that people define prog via DT.

I don't mean to point fingers or anything, but when I see self-proclaimed progheads, whose horizons end on Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree, who don't even know Alan Parsons, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Omega, Yes, and sometimes even King f-ing Crimson... it's really sad.

But yeah, I try to be careful when I mention things like that, I'm already aware that DT isn't the most popular band amongst avid listeners of the genre.

Which brings me to another thing for OP:
People who take subgenres too seriously. I think the subject's been touched on already, but really:

This thread is full of electronic elitists. Oh my.

Rock isn't dead, the music industry has just been replaced by a new era of music.

I don't like how the industry is right now, there's so little passion and talent involved. Granted, there are artists that bring alot to the table, and deserve to be musicians, but so many hip-hop, rap, and electronic artists don't have an ounce of talent in their blood.

I've recently had my views on electronic music changed. I absolutely love the House and Ambient Rock genre's, and am slowly realizing more and more the amount of good artists there are for it.

But the traditional bands won't ever die. Just look at The Black Keys, they represent classic blues in their style, something that died along time ago, and the Keys just hammer it back in. SO much awesome.

I'm sorry I'm as big of a rock fan as you can get, but that statement is just wrong. This mindset is becoming far to common, and it is one of the reasons why I am a little embarrassed to be affiliated with the modern rock community. If you can't tell me the differences between Lil Wayne and, say, Big K.R.I.T and tell me who the better rapper is you have no rite to talk about hip hop. Talent can take shape in more ways that just musicianship, and if you can't recognize a electronic producers talent for composition, then your definition of talent, and in a broader sense your definition for general quality, must be rather shallow. While I agree with you on the point of rock still being relevant it is unwise to discredit whole genres of music just because it doesn't use traditional instruments.
