EMF Reviews Something Completely Different (and possibly slightly controversial)
 
Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of comedy. It’s time I switched over. This review is about a story called ‘Breeze of Love’, by HeartBeat. Now, that doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Well, it will when I tell you that it’s a story about one OC and his Rainbow Dash. Cue “BOO! HISS! BOO! GET OUT OF HERE, EMF!” from readers.
 
Now, only the prologue is up right now, but we can get the gist of the story. There’s this OC called Swift Breeze. He works for the weather patrol and has a crush on Rainbow Dash. I know, half of you hate me already. And you’ll hate me even more when I tell you about his friend who is actually married to Rarity. Anyway, this pegasus who looks like a cross between Soarin’ and Vinyl Scratch has two tickets to para-I mean, a performance by the Wonderbolts. And, as usual, tickets to see the Wonderbolts are the ultimate Rainbow Dash bait. So, of course, she accepts, and our protagonist has a shot of whiskey at the bar and goes home to think about his day. What happens next? I don’t know myself.
 
So it’s time to analyse this prologue. There are a couple of grammatical errors here and there that, while they don’t impact on the story itself, make you question the writer’s competency with the English language a little. The author manages to build a lot of character for his creations in a thousand words, though, so they obviously know their stuff. The placement of the bar seems a little odd to me, but I guess that’s nothing as long as it serves its purpose. Rainbow Dash is kept in character fairly well so far, though I guess there’s room for improvement. We’ll have to wait until the actual romance scenes to get a better idea, though. There’s nothing really much else to analyse.
 
As far as OC x Mane 6 romance fics go, this is definitely not the worst. Although I doubt it’s the best, I think it’s at least in the top half. There are a couple of issues that maybe need to be addressed, but the story reads fairly well. I say check it out if you have the time. OC shipping doesn’t always have to be OHGODMURDERITWITHCOPIOUSAMOUNTSOFFLAMEAGE horrible.
 
And I promise, I’ll review a completed fic next time…

Mbulsht Follows EMF's Lead and Steps Outside His Comfort Zone

Well usually the shipping fanfics are left to me but this week it seems EMF done gone and stepped into my territory! So with EMF straying into fics he doesn't usually touch, I thought it only fair to do the same. To that end, I stepped off my shipping pedestal and wormed my way in to the crack comedy section of fimfiction to see what was going on this week.

Crack Comedy (usually called Absurdist Comedy, often tagged on EqD as "Random" Comedy) is something I've tended to shy away from. For one thing, it's extremely hard to pull off. There is a fine line between randomness being funny and being random for the sake of being random and hoping it comes out funny. Far too often, stories of this nature fall into one or both of these pitfalls the the story comes out as random and incoherent as one would expect, but without the punch of humor to back it up.

Random Comedy stories are also difficult because of the famous much-read novels that have defined the genre, namely the Hitchiker's Guide series by Douglas Adams, and the Myth Adventures series by Robert Lynn Asprin and Jody Lynn Nye. The genre has been done thoroughly and well by these three authors that it's difficult even now to write good truly random comedy without appearing to have plagarized these classics.

But that's not to say that it can be done. And it has been done, in many fandoms.

"Dash Eats Skittles" is a prime example of fandom fanfiction in the Random style done right. For one thing, it doesn't stretch the bounds of implausibility. The subject matter is silly and somewhat unexpected, but the story remains coherent and doesn't fall back on the classic trope in absurdist literature of simply letting quick scene changes and unrelated conversation lines pull the story along.

The setup is simple; in fact the story spells it out all for you in the title. There is nothing unexpected in this fic, except the way in which it Rainbow Dash eating Skittles is presented. And that's where the absurdist comedy influnece pokes it's head in and waves amiably.

"Dash Eats Skittles" breaks no new ground. It does not strive to have an unexpected or thoughtful meaning behind it. It does not attempt to better a genre or present a concept thus far unknown to Pony Fanfiction. What it does do, however, is take a simple concept and do it complete justice.

From a Fanfiction standpoint, anyway.

Also, the author was apparently hammered when he wrote it. So that makes the story a bit more impressive, I guess.

Whatever, just read it. You might find that you like it.
