(Yup: Sorry about the wait, fanfic -fans! You can also check out our dynamic duo's reviews over on the website if you please!)

Welcome to another edition of the Weekend Reader! As per usual, our two blockheads, EMF and Mbulsht, have dived into the sea of fanfics to find some stuff that you might like! Not a fanfic reader? That’s okay! Why not try some of these on for size anyway? Who knows? Maybe you might find something you absolutely love.

EMF *title relating to the premise of the story*
- EMF Scootaloo

Well, here we are again. Another weekend, another Reader. And another two fanfic reviews from Mbulsht and yours truly. This week, I’m going to review a story called “Whisper”, by Warren Hutch. You guys thought the fanfiction reviews needed more Trixie? Here’s your Trixie, don’t use it all at once.

So, anyway, the story takes place immediately after Swarm of the Century. Twilight apologises profusely to Mayor Mare and all is forgiven and everyone lives happily ever after… well, no, that’s a lie. It turns out that a mysterious mare named Whisper (loltitledrop) is behind the events of the episode. But who is this Whisper? And how does Trixie relate to this story in any way, shape or form? Go read it and find out because I’m not gonna tell you.

I’ll just say right now that I think this could easily be a real episode. And that’s not just because it’s a Slice of Life story. The characterization is right on for the most part, there are instances of humour (lolenglishspelling) that resemble the show’s, and everything just plays out at the same pace and in the same way as a typical episode in the show. The only thing that could be improved is Fluttershy, as the author seems to lean a little bit more on the side of what’s known of her and tends to reserve his creativity for the other characters. Still, though, that’s a minor thing compared to how masterfully the plot and the rest of the characters behave.

This fanfic is probably one of the best I’ve read. Sure, I haven’t read many outside of the ones I’ve reviewed, but out of the ones I’ve read, it stands out just for being incredibly show-accurate. Definitely try it out if you have the time.

No Biz Like Show Biz
- Mbulsht

This week I once again stepped off my shipping pedestal to review a general Comedy fic.

I don’t often write about stories that are incomplete as part of this article series, but I feel the need to do so in this case. For one thing, the author seems to be on a roll, writing fairly quickly.

“Hostile Takeover” by Coconutswallow was a fic I found while searching through the backlogs of Fimfiction for Trixie/Fluttershy shipping fanfics; a pairing I think needs much more attention than it’s getting. What I found in Coconutswallow’s fanfic wasn’t a story of romance, but a story of budding friendships whose journey was marked by sneaky underhanded plans, unwilling partnerships, and a general sense of bewilderment on both sides.

“Hostile Takeover” gives us a very fun setup from the start. At the base of its premise lies a time-honored trope used to pair unlikely friends together: the roommate scenario. This time around, our opposites who attract are Fluttershy and Trixie. In the very first few paragraphs of the beginning we find out that Fluttershy has been invited to take on a job as an animal trainer for a circus. And very quickly, the bombshell is dropped that she has to share a small apartment with Trixie. What ensues is a host of crazy, heartwarming, fun, and sad moments.

It would be rather untoward of me to say any more about the plot than that. The story is something you really need to read for yourself, and to be completely hones, the plotline has a tendency to rocket back and fourth. What is particularly fun about this story is the ability of the author to seamlessly blend the sad and funny parts without too much of the story come off as jarring or random.

The story itself is labelled with the “comedy” tag but I honestly don’t know if that’s the correct label for this story. Parts of it are indeed funny, but more than anything this appears to be a heartwarming tale of a spiteful self-serving unicorn and a shy introverted pegasus who meet under improbable circumstances and unwittingly become friends.
If you aren’t already watching this one, I highly suggest you do.
