well, just too let the guys at everfreeforest know that i'm still here lingering in the dark, however seeing as megaupload and other filesharing sites are going down at a frightening speed i see some problems with people getting the full archive.

for some people the use of any P2P software will cause their ISP's to throttle their connection speed to near nothing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandvine) and as such using it is impossible.

as an alternative i would like to offer a download repository on my server because dear lord i have bandwidth coming out of my ears its such a waste its 4TB a month and i don't even run a website on it (just some small minecraft servers.) as a good friend of waka i would be honored to help the community out.

Here's how I've been doing it so far:

I open the song in YouTube. I check to see if the artist lists himself/herself anywhere in the description or even in the song. If he/she does, I look in the previous Archive to see if the folder exists already. If it does not, then I check the YouTube account username. If that one does exist, I'll merge the two. If neither exist I will create the folder under the artist name, if it is given. Otherwise it will be under the YouTube username.

I might be wrong, but it looks like a lot of the songs are missing the metadata, and I'll have to add that as well.

The reason I do it this way is so you don't have to update your file structures constantly, or otherwise you'd might get duplicates from updates.

You can also just tell utorrent to download over top and it will auto detect what is new. The only downside is the torrent is set to use 8mb pieces, which causes repeat downloading of the entire 8mb part even if just a tiny section of it is a new file.

In the future 4mb would probably be a lot of efficient.

You're going to have duplicates of the ones that you have to redownload because they have different information and organization and such than the last pack did. They're different because he may have fixed messed up tags or information, so your computer will redownload them and you'll have duplicates.

That's why I'm just downloading the update pack.

I always would just fix Waka's labeling incidents and stuff with my own organization, so I'll do the same with this update pack and kind of integrate it into what I've got going. I have it organized for top performance and cleanness in iTunes, rather than the actual folders.

This isn't accurate, see my comment above about the chunk size in the torrent. Since it is set to 8mb that is the smallest section the torrent client can verify the hash of. So if any new files fall in to a given 8mb section the entire section must be re-downloaded. Tests show this accounts for an additional 2.2gb on top of the new content. This can't be avoided but can be greatly reduced by using a 4mb or even 2mb chunk size.

A pro-tip for bo1g though: You can right click on the torrent, click on properties, and then click on "Initial Seeding". This will seed the torrent so that the peers will receive the files in order, that way more people will have the full thing sooner, and hopefully more seeders will pop up.

I'll just leave this on over night, hopefully it'll pick up to 350KB/s upload in the mean time.

Actually the new content has only moved about 6%, the first 58% is seeded by anypony who had the old stuff.

I think the original seeder is stretched pretty thin right now between the two torrents and uploading the pack. It would be quicker to focus all bandwidth on uploading either one of the torrents or the update pack. Having the bandwidth split means it will just take longer for us to be able to seed.

I would definitely advise trying to get some version control system working on this (I'd be happy with plain old svn), it would mean a lot less screwing around with torrents and update packs. (although those could be used as supplementaries)

ie: download the version control software, and the bulk of things via a torrent/direct download, then point the version control to the directory, then just update once per day/whenever. I think it would save a lot of time and effort, as it'll also handle file moves/changes/deletes.

Me and waka tried this in the past, it is good in theory but doesn't work for the masses. Torrent will always be the lowest common denominator. Here's a belated attempt to explain the ``2.2 GB extra'' figure.

So basically... Torrents work by dividing all the data in the files into `chunks' of equal size (in this case 8 MB). You download the files in the torrent by downloading chunks from peers. When you download a chunk from a peer, your client hashes the chunk and compares it with the hash in the .torrent file. If it's wrong, it throws it out (a `hashfail').

When you added all the new songs to the old folders, they weren't tacked on at the end; they were mixed in with the old songs. So when you divide your full archive into chunks, you have chunks containing bits of old songs and bits of new songs. When we hash our old archive, there aren't any bits of new songs in our chunks, so the hashes are different. That's why we have to redownload the 2.2 GB Rilnac was mentioning.

TL;DR
The smallest bit we can download from the torrent is 8 MB. All the new songs are scattered around inside the archive, so those 8MB chunks overlap a lot with older stuff that we then have to redownload.

chunk size is too big, make it smaller in the future :3

I'm pissed off at myself for forgetting to add album titles. It's 1.6GB of songs with Unknown Album, which would mean another huge update.

What I will do is take the songs into Mp3tag and select all the songs with no albums, then apply the album names as the artist name (String: %album% - %title%) which is how all the unknown albums were previously done.

Should I simply attach instructions on how to fix it? It really is an easy fix, just a massive download. What do you guys think?

I haven't touched genres either since we've taken over. I've only done artists, titles, and albums. I even missed the 1.6GB of Unknown Album music too, which I just issued instructions to fix.

As for artists, I've been keeping the old ones as they were when Waka did it, but new ones I am naming as their artist name as opposed to the YouTube username.

This is awesome. I've been lamenting how I never really grabbed many PMVs/original songs/remixes/etc over the months and if I wanted to start now after I've suddenly gotten the fever to download absolutely everything it was going to take me weeks to go through each youtube or mediafire link individually. Seriously, thanks.

First off, I want to extend a HUGE THANK YOU for picking this job up. I just have a quick question. Have you guys decided to ditch the method of sorting album-less songs into the My Little Dj Tunes, Rocking is Magic, etc. that Waka was using? I really liked that because it sorted the songs into nice little categories and it meant each song had an album art picture. I ask because I noticed that the old album tags are still intact, but your new ones just use the artist's name as the album name as well.

Obviously this is a huge task and I want you guys to handle it however you want, but you may want to work on consistency with the album tags. That is, either rename all the albums to the artists like you do now, or use Waka's old method. I have a feeling the former is a lot easier, so it that lightens the load a bit then by all means continue doing it. It's not a bad system, I'd just like it if you guys picked one over the other.

I'm sorry if I sound like I'm bitching, I really do appreciate the effort you all put into this. I'm just really OCD when it comes to sorting my music.

I recently went through the the back log of Brony music on my SoundCloud and I'm a little concerned about how little of it is actually in this archive.

I know big changes have recently been made and there is a lot to catch up on, but there a lot of songs from big names like JackleApp, Foozogs/PepperBrony, one from DJ Alex S, Tarby and The Living Tombstone that aren't in the archive.

For those of you who don't use Sound Cloud, most prevalent Brony artists use it and upload a lot more music there than they release on YouTube. Also, if you guys running this archive don't use Sound Cloud I strongly recommend you do.

I thought I might make some new album art for the main albums, seeing as I was getting a bit sick of the old ones.

There are 3 new ones in the pic I attached, and I'm currently making making album art for all the artists I can't find album art for. If any one wants the album art I made just say and I'll put up a link.

Bo1g, I'm not sure if you are going to continue the current album structure or just make albums with artist names. I wouldn't mind making album art for all the artists with multiple songs, like AcousticBrony or SiimGretina that you can add to the all the new music, while people can add the pics to the olds stuff manually (easy to do) so the old stuff doesn't get re-downloaded.

I've already started on new album arts, but thank you though!

As for the album organization, we figured it's much easier the way we are doing now. We're going to get somepony to organize the arts into their specific folders so there won't be artless songs, if that makes sense.

If we're going to go BACK and change the old albums to be consistent with the new ones, however, I would probably do a complete redo of the file structure, which would be both time consuming on everypony's part, but if we're going to do it, we should do it early on before the Archive gets any larger.

What do you guys think?

The problem I have with the current album structure is that I have too many artists, too many to make album art for. I also find that many artists only make 1 or 2 songs. Arranging the music in to 4 main albums for genre tidies up my library (I'm really anal about my iTunes lol) That still gives me the ability to take my favourite artists like SimGretina or Artists with heaps of songs like AcousticBrony and make separate albums for them.

I also like to make themed albums like one for Nightmare Night themed songs/remixes and Christmas ones too.

Anyway that's how I organise my pony tunes. It gives some use to albums and prevents clutter. Its not to hard putting these songs into their genre related albums either, certainly something everypony could do if the downloads remain small.

I do have some concerns about your change validation, I notice the update.bat drops the SherclopPones folder and the new update adds SherclopPonies (which is not the correct name of the artist).

Also it is dropping an entire folder instead of targeting specific files. This makes it impossible for users to safely add files to their archive locally.

In Deluge press ctrl+P, choose the network tab, and make sure DHT and peer-exchange is checked. Also make sure that the active port isn't blocked by your router or firewall. You can easily check this by pressing test active port in the same tab.

The archive is not design specifically for windows users. Only the bat file is design for windows user, and that is only used to delete duplicate songs. If you rename the bat file to .txt you will see what folders the file will delete, and you can delete them yourself manually. The 12 GB torrent also include all changes and fixes and should work just as well for windows as for macs.

May I make the suggestion of running Replaygain on a number of tracks? Equistria Girls was really quiet so I ran it through Replaygain giving a gain boost of over 7dB.

Oh and can we have a MLP tag or something? I like to be able to find all my MLP songs in iTunes and adding a tag would help greatly. If not in the album section then may I suggest making a MLP tag in the Genre section.

Our new host for the mlpmusicarchive.com was unhappy with us "taking advantage of their unlimited disk space and bandwidth." I'm removing the Full Archive from the site now, but we may need to remove the updates from there as well, depending on how much bandwidth is used.

Does anypony know a decent host that will allow us to host said files with actual unlimited bandwidth? I'd hate to see this site go to waste so quickly...

Dreamhost could be worth looking at. They're not a perfect host (who is?) but they're fine with high space/bandwidth usage as long as the space/bandwidth is related to the website (e.g you aren't using their web space to back up your PC HDDs to).

Since it's in the patch, I'm presuming you missed my comment on the forum.
The album version of NotACleverPony's "Sonic Rainboom" and All-Powerful(Trixie)" are NOT the same as the original. There is a slight difference in that the album version removes any sound effects/speech from the show, and it sounds much better, in my opinion, with those effects/speech.

Unrelated, are you still planning on uploading mirrors? I'll gladly use those instead of your bandwidth, but no more torrents for me.
