Howdy, everypony! I'm getting a little tired of the constant lesbian shipping, so I'm looking for a good straight ship. I've looked at the databases listed, EQD, FIMFiction, but there are so many different ones, and I HATE wasting my time reading bad fics. So, anybody have suggestions? Thanks so much!

I saw this and thought it looked pretty cool, but the Fanfic section is rather small. Figured it could use some love. So, if you see anything missing, why not write an article?
(I suppose you could write an article about yourself, but it's nicer to spread the love.)

Ah, this wiki. I've edited it a little. I wrote the pages for Fallout Equestria, Dangerous Business, The Purloined Pony and maybe one or two others I've forgotten.

I don't know that "reviewers on /fic/" is a relevant topic for the wiki, though. While we reviewers do some hard work and make important contributions to a lot of fics, our work is pretty behind the scenes and most of the wiki seems concerned with stuff that's "in front of the scenes" so to speak.

Hey, if we're talking about learning how to do dialogue...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hills_Like_White_Elephants

I just would like to throw some Hemingway in here. A bit tangential to MLP, yes, but that particular story has helped me get the feel of how to write dialogue.

Some pony forgot to sage?
(Off to read)

It still does dialog way better. It's not a bad read. But not only do I doubt Brongaar cares, I can't see him hunting the story down either.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/94569/Hills-Like-White-Elephants if you really want it.

As for dialog there are spots that are intentionally open for interpretation. You have the option of reading into it, but all in all it's very well done for two person dialog with no external interjections.
Still, while it's great for learning dialog, which 'Brongaar' clearly needs, it doesn't really help as much for the large scenes of multiple character focus that would help make this story readable.

But to get style problems down like this, he really needs to read more, then apply that sort of style to the story he's trying to tell.

So, what fics are your guilty pleasures? Ones you know you shouldn't like but just do.

> Mine's 'Until You Met Her'. I know it's not particularly well written and its basically just an fanboys fantasy mixed in with a bit of literary masturbation, but gosh darn it, it's just plain enjoyable.

I usually take the "best" damn fics I can find and point out everything bad to the readers who find them amazing. I'm a killjoy for the fun of it, and it also does help the author somewhat, if he's not a lazy ass and decides to fix the errors.
>> No. 78969

I know exactly what you mean. It really sucks when people receive criticism, ignore it, then write another story with the exact same flaws. Like, you're only trying to help them be a better author.
>> No. 79011
"Assumptions" and... a clopfic. I know I'm horrible, but in my defense, it was a really good story until it got to that point. (100k+ words in) It may not be a pulitzer prize winner, but it was a gripping HiE story filled with the issues of a self-loathing brony, living in a world that shouldn't (but eventually does) accept him. But, when it started to hit the unmentionable scenes... It all went downhill, and soon became just another self-insert author fantasy.

(If anypony hasn't noticed, I'm a sucker for shipping fics)

the only well known fics i can think of that ive read so far is Cupcakes (of course) and My Little Dashie. and Fallout Equestria is on my list... for one of these days...

THIS THIS THIS

I don't particularly like Past Sins either, although I also don't dislike it. The Sue-ish nature and the way in which the mane six is presented doesn't bother me (I should confess that I have an unusually high tolerance for Sue-ish stuff).

What bothers me is, exactly as you said, it seemed like two different fanfics jammed together. The part building up Nyx seemed nice (not great, but nice). After the middle part, it seemed to me like the author didn't really know what to do. Nyx deals with her various... issues... in a really pedestrian sort of way. And, oh goodness, the ending. It seemed like the author just ran out of ideas and gave up.

I'd give it something like a C+

Fanfics I like... This was one of the last ones that I read, and it was hilarious: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/1383/Lily%27s-Medication

While we're tearing into popular fics... Cross And Arrow was pretty average too. It kept the mane six in-character, but the overall plot felt pretty pointless, and I don't think the genderswap was as imaginative as it could have been.

It has some funny moments, but it's pretty forgettable. And the Lavender Unicorn Syndrome is through the roof!

I've actually reviewed it for my tumblr (http://eznwords.tumblr.com) but the post doesn't go up for another three hours.

>>78994
As for Past Sins... Nyx's cuteness is preserved at the cost of an actually interesting final act. Emomare Moon is boring and lame to read about.

As for the actual topic, some of my favourites are:

Let me extend a heartfelt apology to anypony who was offended or took it the wrong way that I posted my story in more than a few reviewer threads (including two closed threads, herp derp). I'm not an attention horse. Not anymore than we all are, anyway.

Officially: My story is posted in multiple review threads, but I don't have the password to delete them. I write this in the interest of transparency and communication. Okay?

Somepony told me I need to use the Training Grounds tinyurl form to post there, but now I'm afraid to post anything because apparently "I've made a name for myself" within the first hour I discovered ponychan. Rats. Sorry I didn't know all the rules, guys.

I am brand new to all of this. I won't break the rules again, and I definitely appreciate any help that is forthcoming on my story.

Please don't hurt me or beat me up.

Thank you.

I gave the story a second chance out of boredom.
I don't see what you where trying to do here. And you need that before anything else.

Dude, how can you find this funny? There's a thin line between dark comedy and horror, which side do you think this line falls on?: “Okay. Can I just take a moment and--No offense, dude--And just take a moment to say how ironic it is that a pegasus killed herself by hanging?”

Why is Claw Junction an interesting place? It doesn't seem like it. You describe it as a flat background, then jump over to Cloudsdale. Your characters have nicknames and quirks, but don't seem like real people.

{ Equestria- Gryphon Kingdom }
Mayhaps you could have brought that up... earlier.

Formatting wise you should indent dialog. Maybe add a blank line between your dialog paragraphs, because your character dialog runs together. Your use of parenthesis comes of amateurish, seeing as we already know the characters thoughts, seeing asides as asides just makes them less part of the story, and more you just telling the reader what people are doing.

Would you kindly explain how a story can be [Grimdark] AND [Normal]? Methinks you need fewer tags.

Other than that, nice thread.

Illustrations are an interesting touch.

You seem to have a good grasp on grammar and punctuation, which is refreshing.

Stories go in review threads because there are way more authors than reviewers. Single-story threads like yours are nice, but generally don't tend to get very much attention because reviewers work in their threads and very few people look for stuff to read on /fic/.

Feeling stuck in a rut? Can’t come up with any new ideas, or be motivated to write? Wanna get your name out on /fic/, or just practice your writing? Then the [Everything] Prompt is the thing for you!

Every Wednesday at 9:00 EST we’ll be posting a short prompt for anyone and everyone to write about. Once the prompt is posted, everyone will have one week from the time of the post to write something concerning the prompt. Any characters, genre, length, style, anything you can think of, so long as you can tie it back to the prompt. Also, if you have any ideas for a future prompt, please post them.

Also, if you’re interested, I will be compiling a list of works written for the prompt as well as the prompt they were written under. If you would like your submission added to the list, please say so in your post.

This week’s prompt is: Lost and Found

Hi there,

I created and sent off a fanfic less than a couple of months ago and I got a response without any advice or help simply telling me that my fanfic would never be on EQD.

I replied asking for help but haven't got a response since.

I kind of shrugged it off and gave up on my fanfic at the time but recently i've felt like rewriting some parts of my existing fanfic.

I was wondering if there would be any point in me picking up my fanfiction again and maybe posting it to EQD or should I just leave it?

That could actually be a pretty good plot. Not in the way you mean, but in that Twilight trying to explain The Birds and The Bees to Spike would be pretty funny.

#Single fic #Sad #Shipping #Dark
Okay, so I've been writing this story for fimfiction since Christmas. Lately, one of my best commenters suggested I posted the fic here, so I guess I'll do that.

Synopsis: This story revolves around the princesses Celestia and Luna, their parents and Discord, and it takes place way before the Mane 6. Actually, it describes how the world was settled by the alicorns and how events thereon after unfolded to form Equestria as we know it today. So, from the first settlement of the world by the alicorn race to the defeat of Nightmare Moon. This is my own suggestion of the history of the mlp-universe, and I'm fairly certain that it does not conflict with existing canon.

I think this gets assumed because it tends to be true most of the time. I agree with you that not every story needs to get on EqD and that not every author should aspire to that.

It's an assumption, but it's one that's backed up by experience.

Also, I'd say that there's generally no harm in trying to get your fic on EqD. Authors want exposure, and stories there will get a good number of reads. 'Course, it ain't really the place for obscure crossovers or experimental stories.
>> No. 78662
>>78661
I don't think that's really true in all cases. Some cases sure, but not all cases.

A musician can write a song because he wants to be on Billboard. That song is going to be different than if he's writing to reach people / express himself or herself.

Just look at, say, R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People". It's an iconic tune that defined the group for a while and everyone listened to it / loved it. But it wasn't made as a good song on its own merits. The band members hate it.

If I decided "I'm writing X to get on EqD", then X is going to be really different than "I'm writing X to be the best story with this idea possible."
