It's been almost nine months, but a new thread and a new release has finally arrived. (Old thread >>36234)

Version 1.42.4 (2013-11-30)
Link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7s7d2t97x7jn2ut/Desktop%20Ponies%20v1.42.4.zip

DesktopPonyGuy appears to have moved on to other things, but development has continued. The artists have added lots of new animations and characters, and there's 149 to choose from in this release!

The program itself has also seen a number of changes. The biggest by far is support for Mac and Unix. Yes - Desktop Ponies is now multi-platform.

We've also got a new site set up:
http://desktopponies.bugs3.com/index.php
And don't forget the DA community
http://desktop-pony-team.deviantart.com/

Feature requests or bug reports are welcomed (and for those who don't know me, I'm RoosterDragon, and I'm maintaining the program in DPGs absence).

The last thread has been saged for so long. I'm happy to see Desktop Ponies back on the front page!

For me,it always tells me to change the path to screensaver, when I don't have the screensaver because of that.It tells me that I can't run default profile, when it is not included. This is the cause of the "change path" error. Please help!

And I was hoping that there wouldn't be any silly errors. :/

Possible workaround: Type %TEMP% into Windows explorer. Then find and delete the 'DesktopPonies_ScreenSaver_Settings.ini' file.

If that doesn't fix it, please post a screenshot of the exact errors you're getting (also, make sure you're running the .exe file, not the .scr file).
>> No. 43181
What is the settings file doing in %TEMP% anyway?

It should be in FOLDERID_RoamingAppData.
>> No. 43186

That's just how it was originally set up.

It's not suitable as roaming data though, so being in the temp folder isn't all that bad, really.

Neither Mono nor Wine are able to run either of the executables.

Running "mono 'Desktop Ponies.exe'" gives the following error:

In wine, I get the error:
"Install Mono 2.8 or greater for Windows to run .NET 4.0 applications."

But I'm already running mono 2.10.8.1

Oh, found a small bug again. When ponies follow another pony and then stop, sometimes they won't go into their idle animation. Happens at times with Twilight's and AJ's truck interaction or in the beginning of the conga.

Also, I made some small changes to some of the ponies: just a few little fixes, nothing new. Also reduced the probabilities of some of Rarity's behaviors that use (audible) speeches.

I'm a beginner at scripting, which is hard to do except on my version RPG Maker XP, where I have a bunch of scripts in a zipped folder. When I get Microsoft Visual Basic I will try my hand at "real" scripting.
Also, I would join the DP forum but the Parental Controls which my parents set up keeps blocking it. :( Wish I were there. D:
One more thing before I get back to the characters for my DP-Based program. When I get to it I will pick up that Pinkie Pie animation and finish it.

question are we counting the MLP Comics as "cannon"?
>> No. 43253
>>43252
That's actually a good question... The comics are basically a second show. Many series have a comic book and right now, this comic is pretty much identical to the show but with its own stories.

I honestly think comic characters should by included if they are canon or not but with restrictions. We can't just make every background character like in the show since the comic's backgrounds are more crowded then Tokyo... Limit it to (at least) semi-important characters.
>> No. 43254
>>43216
same here. You aren't the only one with the same problem.
>> No. 43256
>>43252
According to the people working in the comic, the events shown in the comic are cannon as long they don't contradict the events from the cartoon.
The cartoon's continuity always will take over the comic's continuity regarding cannonicy so I suppose only the characters created for the comic will not be considered cannon.
>> No. 43259
>>43252
No, they are not cannon. Not pistol or rifle, either.
As for them being canon... not really. I'd rather call them "expanded universe".
>> No. 43260
>>43256
>>43259
I think the main question is if comic exclusives will be allowed in the program. I read the next story arc has a unique villain.

Like I said, I think it might be alright but limited to the story related characters, no backgrounds.
>> No. 43262
>>43260
Well, the "canon characters only" rule has been broken before, what with the inclusion of Surprise, an alternate version of Doctor Whooves and filly versions of the princesses.
That said, it can happen if the character turns out to be interesting and/or important enough, but I guess it would still be the exception rather than the rule.
>> No. 43268
This release is intended to:
- Fix screensaver related problems. There are some changes, new files and also some extra information in the readme which I hope should address any issues.
- The program will no longer bug you about screensaver stuff if you are just trying to run it normally.
- Test a change which might improve scrolling issues on Macs.

Your choice of two download links, each identical:
http://dropcanvas.com/vrt2v/1
http://www.datafilehost.com/download-a6ba7876.html

Simply copy files into the same location, and overwrite any previous ones.

PS: If anybody knows a good free file hosting site that would work well for these downloads, please point me at it and I'll use it in future.

-----------

My apologies to Mac users with the scrolling problem. Mono attempts to recreate how the menu works on Windows, but it seems to be failing at it somewhat.

I've simplified the design a bit, and I hope that might fix the problem, but it might also have literally no effect. Let me know what changes.

>>43201
>>43237
I think I know this one! The standard mono install doesn't seem to have a key file. Install the package named "libmono-microsoft-visualbasic10.0-cil". On Ubuntu, that's "sudo apt-get install libmono-microsoft-visualbasic10.0-cil" from the command line. That should account for the "main entry point cannot be loaded" error.

Yeah, according to that blog post trying to run certain applications on anything less than 10.6 might cause the problem you had.

It includes a workaround, but I don't know enough to help you with it. If you can figure it out let me know, otherwise I guess you'll have to hope somebody Mac-savvy can figure it out.

>>43271
Stick with 3.0.2 then. At least that indicates the program got started and then died. The other error indicates it didn't even start.

I'm still unsure what might be going on, so I can only give generic advice like uninstalling and reinstalling mono in case the two versions messed with each other.

I've included some extra console output in this version which might give me some clues. Try posting that when it crashes.

>>43274
You're 99% there! Just double click the 'Desktop Ponies.exe' file and it'll run. Don't worry about the 'Desktop Ponies.exe.config' file, it's just a text file (but don't delete it, it is important!).

The options menu has a section to set the exclusion zone. The location and size values range from 0 to 100, these are percentages relative to your screen size.

I suggest setting size to 50, 50 to get started. You should see a green block representing the exclusion zone appear. Then you can tweak the values and the preview will update. It should be reasonably easy for there, since you'll be able to visualize what the numbers mean.

OK, after getting the Main-1.42 to run,
here's how to set up the Screensaver(under Win7, might also work like this under other Windows-Versions):

1st:

I've downloaded the actual patch, found at the official Release:
http://desktopponies.bugs3.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3

and unpacked it into the Directory of the 1.42

2nd:
right-click on the .scr and select install
Now you have to enter the Config of the screensaver(Windows-Screensaver-settings), pointing to the main-Directory of Desktop-Ponies(where the .exe remains)
By default, the screensaver now loads only a random single Character

3rd:
Start the "normal", non-screensaver-Version, setting up a Profile called "screensaver" and just add all the Ponies, that you'd like to see on the Screensaver.
>Enjoy, as the screensaver-Profile is now used by the Screensaver, showing all wanted Ponies

Note: the Mane6 seems to interact with eachother

In this release:
- Added pagination to the main menu. This is primarily to provide a workaround on Mac due to the scrolling issues with the UI (see screenshot). This will kick in automatically on Macs once loading is finished. Other platforms can just click the checkbox if they want to use it.
- Fixed long standing bug where toggling a tag in the filter on the main menu would not refresh the display straight away.
- Fixed a problem with copying images/sounds for new behaviours/effects under mono.
- Fixed an issue with deleting rows from the editor not having an effect when the file was saved.

>>43329
I run an optimizer on them, but it's not supposed to change how they look, only reduce the filesizes.

Which ones did it break? It's been such a long time since I noticed any problems with it I've just been trusting it to do the right thing. Guess I was too trusting :/
>> No. 43335
>>43333
No no, it didn't actually break anything. I just noticed it because Sombra's crystals would linger on the last frame of its "shattering" longer than intended, and when I checked, the last frame (which was supposed to be blank) was missing. Some other effects that are not meant to loop might suffer from this, too.

Other animations, while they at times look quite mangled when I open the file in my animation program, actually work within the desktop ponies program, so I guess it's not so terribly bad...

...

So yeah. Call it nit-picky, but I just wanted to mention that.

Are you using Animation Shop 3 when optimizing the sprites? That program has a nasty habit of doing strange things when saving files with those features.

Nah I use a program called gifsicle. It's extremely good at compressing gifs.
http://www.lcdf.org/gifsicle/

It does however have that annoying problem you have found with blank final frames. It thinks the blank means "no change made since the last frame". So it just sums the time with the previous frame (because it thinks they look the same, and so it won't hurt to combine them).

To combat this, insert a frame before the blank frame. Give it zero duration and fill it with a solid colour (say white). This will stop the frames getting combined and keep your original blank frame intact. The zero duration means Desktop Ponies won't ever show that frame (though some image viewers might). I did this with RD's rainboomtest.gif, so you check that image for reference.

Not ideal I know, but it does work. If you know other images with this problem point them out and I can apply this workaround to them too.

>>43339
This is good news and yet somewhat annoying, but thanks for testing it out. I hope it's actually usable with the new pagination system.

So for Mac users out there, trying to get it to run with mono:
- If the stable version isn't working, try the beta.
- If the beta version isn't working, try the stable.
- If both don't work - errr, panic (or maybe hope the stable release of version 3 will work for you when that comes out).

It is weird that some systems specifically need the beta for it to work, but others specifically need the stable. So weird.

Sounds like a bug. Just great, now I'm finding bugs in programs I didn't even know about before. :p

Hmm... off the top of my head, Pinkie's teleport does have this problem, too (the two files starting with "teleportstart"). I'm not sure if there are any more at the moment.

Also, a little design-suggestion about the new pagination thing: Wouldn't it be better to put the option for this either in the option-screen or in the space below the option button? Also, have the navigation buttons only appear if you're actually using paged view.

In other news, I just noticed that I made a tiny mistake with one of the frames of my trot animation for Sombra. It's barely noticeable even when you know it's there, but I fixed it anyway because I'm nit-picky like that. Download the fixed gifs here: http://filer.net/get/k9glgluraie0pojw

Ah. Aah! Noticed something. The Desktop Ponies program doesn't even like those optimized gifs (at least those bigger ones).

When summoning Derpy, I noticed that the animation when she jumps on that cloud (the gifs starting with "derpy_cloud_") skips pretty much the whole jumping part. I replaced those files with the old, "unoptimized" ones, and lo and behold, the animation runs as smoothly as it used to be.

Honestly, I don't know the benefits of this "optimization" aside from saving a few measly kb, but I'm beginning to think that the drawbacks are outweighing them.

There is a bug with running desktop ponies on secondary monitor in extended desktop mode:
if secondary display is placed right to primary everything works fine
but if it's placed left or above primary, it has negative coordinates:

Ah! I think I've remembered why.

You summoned Derpy from the right-click menu, right? If so all her images will not have been loaded yet, and they get loaded only once they are actually used. (Can't load them all when you add her, or there'll be an annoying pause for a few seconds whilst it does all that loading).

For small images, this works ok because they load quickly and you probably won't notice. For larger images it takes a moment, so they'll be a pause and it'll skip ahead afterwards to catch up on lost time.

You'll only notice this the first time a behaviour or effect plays for a new type of summoned pony. After that the image is loaded. Alternatively if you choose them from the menu all their images are loaded before you start.

I think that's probably the reason.

- Start "C# Desktop Ponies.exe"
- Once everything is loaded, a button labeled "Gif Alpha" should appear at the top. Click that.
- Here, you can choose the files you want to edit. Afterwards, just pick a color by clicking on the pony or directly from the palette and edit its values to your liking. Don't forget to save and you're done. Well, with this file at least. :p

For some reason, whenever I put the in crystal pony action, it messes up the character's interactions. Rainbow went back to the lowercase error and Twilight's interactions got duplicated. This happened MANY TIMES during Rainbow Dash. Any time I do something to a character it keeps duplicating their interactions for no reason. Rainbow had about 10 copies of her 2 interactions and I had to go in and remove them manually. I go in and change one thing, they are back... WTF is going on!?

About the sparkling: Perhaps it's because the "canvas" of your Twilight is so much bigger then that of your Rainbow. If I remember correctly, the sprite layers are set depending on where the graphics' lower edges are, and since Twilight's is lower, she's drawn in front of the sparkles.

Full release v1.42.0.5, in this version:
- Fixed images for several ponies which had zero duration frames (and thus those frames would not be shown).
- Fixed a couple of images with transparent final frames that had been optimized away by accident.
- More (speculative) fixes for scrolling problems on the Mac.
- Fixed wonky scrollbar when restoring the main menu from the taskbar.
- Fixed a problem where saving interactions would use the lowercase name of the pony, thus causing errors later.
- If the program encounters an error it wasn't expecting, it will attempt to log this to "error.txt" for later reference.

I'm just trying to work around specific bugs in Mono on the Mac platform.

So yeah if you have too many ponies it is still broken. I'm afraid my advice at this point is simply "don't do that" (or at least, make the window bigger first or something).

It also doesn't recognize mouse clicks when ponies are active. So dragging won't work. I made that extra window that allows you to get the context menus that usually require right-clicking because of this issue.

I'm annoyed it still has leftover graphics. If you do something that forces the window to refresh itself, like maybe resizing or minimizing and restoring it, does that clear up the leftovers? Is there anything you can do that clears it up or are they stuck there?

>>43486
Are you referring to the screensaver still, or something else? If you get an error message then post that because those help me a lot.

Are either of you running multiple monitor setups? If so get v1.42.0.6 (>>43466) first because I fixed a bug in that which sounds similar.

Could you also try mousing over a pony (without clicking on them) and see if they get into their mouseover animation or speak to you? Try it on one of the mane 6, they have obvious mouseover animations. That would at least indicate if the mouse position is being worked out correctly.

I've got one last idea which I've tried, but I'm still just guessing so don't get your hopes up. Try this version and see if anything improves.

If this doesn't work around the issue, I'll probably have to cook up something custom for Mac to get around the Mono issues with that main menu, but that'll require time and not being lazy on my part.

This is the first time I'm attempting to make a custom pony sprite. I watch the tutorial, but I realized, there's only a mare base. I figured "No problem, maybe I can find a way to put together a Stallion base" Though after Looking at all the different layers plus reference layers, I don't know where to even begin. Is there a possibility of there being a Stallion base that has layers divided up just like the "mare Base" Photoshop file?

I am using cs2 so I also have to do a ton of switching between photoshop and imageready to make a pony. Under file go to save optimized as and that will save it as a gif file. Make sure in the animation window that you have all the frames set to restore to background since that can cause problems. Hopefully cs2 and cs are similar enough that thats all you need to do.

Do you have a GitHub repository? Because I wanted to look at the source to find out what the (new) values of TargetActivation really mean (I'm who writes Browser Ponies). You should have a GitHub (or Bitbucket) repository anyway. It makes it much clearer where one can get the source from and who is maintaining it, you get a bugtracker and wiki for free and you can use GitHub-Pages to host the binary download (like I host the Browser Ponies page) instead of this obscure file hoster you use now. And you write "we", so I suspect there are more developers than one. This means you need some kind of SCM anyway. Use git (or mercurial)!

(Note: Maybe don't commit large binary files (all the gifs and mp3s) to the repository. You could commit them and tell all developers in the readme to use shallow clones. I recommend to use a shallow submodule. If you use mercurial use the bigfile extension for that.)

Deviantart's admins suspended my account for "harrasement" because according to them, sending too many theft reports at once counts as that.

I *think* this might be from an incomplete mono installation.

I'm not sure how that might happen, as mono comes ready to go with Ubuntu, so that's pretty bizarre.

Try grabbing the "mono-complete" package, that will install absolutely everything you might be missing and then some.

If that doesn't fix it, I might recommend redownloading the v1.42.0.9 patch (>>43628) and overwriting the files again just in case it got weirdly corrupted or something.

For anybody having this error on Mac, I have changed the error handling in this version so that there's a better chance Desktop Ponies will get a message about something going wrong. Hopefully this error message will tell me something new, enough to deal with the problem.

If anybody with this problem is willing to help me out, try running this version. It should create a file called error.txt when something goes wrong and if you could post the contents of that, it'd be a help. Thanks.

With Hasbro shooting down Fighing is Magic, I think this project will need some more defined copyright limits and harsher politics regarding the use of it's resources to avoid suffering a similar fate.

Hunting down and getting rid of all of those stolen bases circulating on deviantart AND offering officialy approved (and copyright defined) bases at your DA page would be a good idea, so nobody could misuse your resources or feign ignorance whenever they are caught selling your property for a profit.

Better to be safe than sorry, guys.

Um, we already get enough flak from the community as is from what we do crack down on and you want us to go harsher? I'm sorry but I don't think creating more bad blood is a good thing. Plus fighting is magic just got a little too big that Hasbro couldn't ignore it anymore. Our project is still hopefully under that radar and I doubt a base or two up on deviant art is going to change that.
>> No. 43996

You people could create a fixed set of "official" templates, fully and clearly labaled as non allowed to be used for commercial purposes (thus, destroying the "I had no idea!" excuse used by people selling Desktop Ponies AND getting DA to get rid of all of those unnoficial ones used to sell things by people who genuinely believed the thieves were the real creators)
Also, you could make an open statement that editing your current animations is not allowed anymore (thus, cutting out for good the flow of people selling recolors)

People would understand your stance if instead of simply stopping scammers you provided people with the tools needed to create their own things rather than depending of commision stores to get their OCs.

People continues giving you flak because you guys are too nice and anyone can abuse you guys as much as they want by simply being stubborn, as you guys always end up giving up at the end.

Not an exaggeration as I've seen people abusing your work since 2011 and absolutely nothing happened to them.
>> No. 43997

Most of this is already done by us, other ideas are no good for one reason or the other.

>Also, you could make an open statement that editing your current animations is not allowed anymore
This essentially defeats the purpose of this being an open group project. How is anyone supposed to add new animations if they are not allowed to edit them? Why even offer a base in the first place?

>People would understand your stance if instead of simply stopping scammers you provided people with the tools needed to create their own things rather than depending of commision stores to get their OCs.
We already provide people with templates and tutorials. What else are we supposed to do? Supply everyone with their own copy of Photoshop?
Sadly enough, there are quite some people who are just lazy and will gladly fork over cash to anyone offering some cheap recolors.
Also, there are enough people who claim that, by providing bases, we are implicitly allowing them to use them for anything - including making money. Yes, it's insane parasprite logic. We know it and so do they.

>People continues giving you flak because you guys are too nice and anyone can abuse you guys as much as they want by simply being stubborn, as you guys always end up giving up at the end.
Sadly, hunting down those thieves can only go so far. We simply can't track them all down to their homes and threaten them at gunpoint into stopping their dastardly deeds. Because we are nice, after all. (Also, traveling around the globe can be quite costly)

Mayve or the EVO event, they want money and they put the FightinhIsMagic there, hasbro see it and the C&D send becaus they think that 'They are making money indirectly' indifferent if are or not acepted by they...

My seccond theory is based on the fact that the law say that Hasbro (the company) owner of the right if was notify about a potential projectthat can compromise they ownership (in the sense that you can lost ownership over a franshine if you not manage it correctly) of the franshine, and for fallow the law they notify about it to mane6dev team

Also, I have to mention, I don't think they can really do anything against art. There are way more people in the fandom who take commissions to get much more money. All profit from DP can't legally be pinned on us because its all unauthorized.

You are reposting templates made without Desktop Ponies' team permission, which is already bad. People uses them to sell DP animations, which is double bad and you want to keep doing it no matter what others say so you could get attention or e-fame: Triple fail combo.

Yeah 1.39 should run just fine with that setup. If you're worried about things not being up to date - just run Windows Update. That should cover most of it.

5","79,65",False,2

Spitfire:
Behavior,"remove-suit",0.01,10.24,10.24,0,"spitfire_stand_right.gif","spitfire_stand_left.gif",None,"stand-nosuit","","",False,0,0,"",False,,,"53,51",

>>44208
Nice catch I'll add those fixes in.

Random speeches must be in the same group as the group of the current behaviour before that can be used. So it's "working as intended" - although I suppose I could make an exception for group 0 speeches and let them play whenever. What do you guys think?
>> No. 44210
>>44209
Actually, as far as I know, speeches and behaviors set to group 0 were always supposed to be able to play whenever, as group 0 is the wildcard. If that doesn't happen currently, it's definitely not working as intended.

Behaviours do, yeah. I don't think speeches ever treated group 0 as a wildcard (I think they used to ignore groups, and at some point I changed it to be current group only and forgot about group 0).

I've changed that so it's consistent with behaviours now (current group or group 0).

I spent an ungodly long time just trying to recreate the idle issue (I really did think it was gone). Took a while but I did manage to get it to happen with the AJ/Twi truck interaction. Is it possible to include a script that will let the ponies answer questions when they are put into a certain mode? I just randomly came up with this idea... like maybe you could right click them and put them in interview mode, then right click again and the "Interview Mode" button will be a dropdown menu with a bunch of questions to ask. And maybe you could formulate your own questions for friends to ask the pony.
Of course not all the ponies will be able to have questions to ask (there are a lot of ponies!) so those who don't have any questions at the time might say something like, "Sorry, I'm busy. You could ask someone else..." I don't have Visual Basic so I don't know if this is possible.

I don't think this could be possible.

The program allows to trigger certain conversations when some user-defined ponies get near each other but your idea is asking too much from a program that is already struggling to do it's best.

- Pony movements after taking over control still doesn't work correctly, so games are still unplayable.
- Ponies now fidget around the screen edges instead of properly bouncing off them. (I have a single monitor)

I'm sorry, but this update fell flat in my opinion.

Lovin' all the new sprites so far, hats off to the animators.
Now, I need bit of help with the program, when I clear stuff with CCleaner on my PC, it seems to remove the DP screensaver configuration, as it asks for the DP folder when activating again. Does somepony know which option should I need to disable in CCleaner so that this doesn't get erased?

>>44356
Yeah my bad, fixed those up.

>>44357
The settings file gets put into your temporary directory (%TEMP%). So yeah it gets nuked whenever the temporary files get cleared out.

>>44358
A common issue is forgetting to specify frame durations on your animations. If the duration of each frame is zero, then there's nothing to animate! Try checking what they are set to in your image editor. If they're zero, try setting them to 0.1s or something like that.

>>44366
Did you get sound in previous versions? If you go to the options menu, can you see a message about sounds being disabled due to lack of DirectX? (If not, make sure you have the checkbox ticked for enabling sounds, while you're there.)
>> No. 44370

Okay, controls seem to be fixed (at least within games). The ball has some odd behavior, though. For example, it will occasionally move to the wrong side when kicked (which is extremely annoying in the Ping Pong game). Also, ponies should probably stay on their side of the screen during this game.

Bouncing off screen edges is much improved. In fact, it looks even better than before. Nice! :)

Yep, much better :)

Not off topic at all! You can do this in the Pony Editor. Select a pony who will initiate the interaction.

By default, in the bottom-right you can see the interactions for that pony. To add a new one, click the "New Interaction" button.

Then, you just need to fill in the blanks.
- Give the interaction a unique name.
- Choose the ponies who will be involved. You can choose multiple ponies if you like. If you're adding the interaction to Twilight Sparkle, you can have her interact with a copy of herself just by selecting her in the list.
- Choose the behaviours the ponies can run. Usually you make a specific behaviour in advance for all the ponies involved that has the correct images, speech, etc. So be sure to set these up.
- Choose a random "chance to occur" - somewhere between 5% and 30% is probably ok.
- The other values are probably ok on their defaults.

Save and you're good to go.

>>44454
I'm afraid the error from the console here isn't a lot of use to me (it's the default from mono and it isn't quite detailed enough). I'll see if I can make it do something more useful in the next version, since the error.txt isn't appearing for you.

There is an odd bug that seems to be related to interactions (but I can only guess here). I've started the program with a few ponies (including the Mane 6), and after a while (sometime after the conga interaction ended), some of the ponies started running to the upper left corner of the screen and kept "running" even after reaching the corner.

Speaking of the conga interaction: sometimes ponies that are set to follow other ponies start moving without regards to the pony they are supposed to follow. So I guess that somehow, the following is broken.

Okay, the editor bug is gone now. :)

Interactions seem to be somewhat broken again. Very obvious with Pinkie's conga, which will often start with just a few ponies (as long as all of the Mane 6 are on screen).
Also, there seems to be a problem with characters changing animations during interactions: Sometimes, they'll get stuck in the wrong animation (for example when Twilight teleports Pinkie, the later will just repeat her vanishing animation, or when Pinkie hugs Fluttershy, Fluttershy will sometimes stay invisible even after the interaction is over).

Also, no love for Blueblood? ;)

>>44850
Can't believe I missed Blueblood. Added! You'd think copying in new files would be the easy bit and yet I somehow miss them on occasion...

Fixed the interaction issue. Fluttershy was more interesting, it wasn't the interaction, but rather the fact most of her behaviours were moved to group 1. Thus when she tried to switch out of the interaction finding a new behaviour at random usually failed and so she would keep repeating her current, invisible, behaviour.

Found out about this today. That is an amazing feature. You guys are awesome! Since you've said that requests are welcome, I'm taking the liberty to ask you guys to add some more animations to Princess Twilight, to make she look like the original Twilight Sparkle. While most of Twilight's animations are decidedly unique, there are some that really would go well with her Princess version, like the reading animation and the 'wind blowing in my mane' animation. Not being an artist myself, I can't even try to add those animations. Your call, obviously, and thank you for the amazing program; it made using the computer that more awesome!

Feature requests. Like, suggestions for the program itself. Sprite requests are usually frowned upon.

That said, additional animations for Princess Twilight are definitely a possibility, but personally, I see little point in simply copying regular Twilight's animations. I'm sure that, once season 4 starts, there'll be enough material for a few extra animations that can be unique to Twilicorn.

allright our site is only half down? I guess. The main page is down but our subforums seem to work. http://desktopponies.bugs3.com/viewforum.php?f=5
The numbers for the other forums are 1 and 4 (replace the 5). I wondered why no one was complaining about it being down and I believe that's why. Most just go to the download page. Does anyone know how to fix this or ever heard of this type of problem before?

Any suggestions on what I should try? I disabled my firewall to see if that was blocking the site but I still couldnt get through so what else could be preventing me from accessing the site. I don't want to try logging in through a proxy server as logging into an admin account through a proxy just sounds like a bad idea.

I've done all the required things, and installed Mono and XQuartz, the newest stable versions. Upon running the Run on Mac script, it takes forever for the terminal to respond. In fact, I didn't think it was doing anything until I started typing this.

This is what the terminal's saying (the last two lines didn't appear until at least a minute later). On top of this, I've now got the window open but everything is grayed out and it's been "loading ponies" for the past 5 minutes. Also the console had no applicable error messages, just some from me trying to run it without XQuartz last night. It seems like nothings going wrong, the program's just running slow as buck.

I can only apologise for the Mac issues. Mono has been far from reliable and I don't have a machine I can test it on so getting it working is pretty damn hard.

If you open Activity Monitor, does the mono/desktop ponies process seem to be actually using some CPU once the window appears? I'm wondering if it is loading, but being slow like you suggest, or if it actually is somehow failing to load the ponies at all and is just sitting there.

I would expect the ponies to load in no more than 30 seconds, even if things were going fairly slowly.
>> No. 45675
>>45652

I have the same issue, and looking at the Activity Monitor, the mono process seems to be just sitting there. Its CPU usage is at 0.4%, and goes up to 3% when I wiggle the window around, but that's it.
Also, the Disk Activity tab shows absolutely no data being read from the disk.

On the subject of testing, I know it's possible to virtualize a fairly recent version on OS X on Windows. It might be a bit involved, though.
>> No. 45722
>>45638
>>45675
From that description, I *think* I can guess the cause of the issue.

Could you guys give this version a quick go to see if it fixes your issue? If so, I'll probably be using it as a base for a .9 release shortly.

If it doesn't fix it, I still have one more thing worth trying.

I'm glad you're spamming versions at me! I was actually worried you'd just give up at some point, so.

This new version goes further into the process! A blue progress bar appeared at the bottom of the window and filled up in maybe a dozen seconds. Now that it's done though, the status text has changed from “Loading ponies” to “Viewing 0 ponies”, and indeed the rest of the UI doesn't acknowledge the presence of any pony.
The controls in the window are all irresponsive, even though they aren't in their disabled state anymore; I can close the game using the standard close button though, which was not possible before.

Have a (more complete, and different) Terminal dump:

v1.42.2.9 is a full release, all files included.
- Added Flash Sentry by Bot-chan. (>>45619)
- Added an interface for specifying translucent colors for GIF images to the editor.
- Ponies may no longer follow effects. (This stops the program getting confused between following a pony and effect with the same name.)
- On Windows, running with alpha blending enabled is now just as fast as with it disabled.
- When changing linked behaviors in the editor, the "link order" column will now update as changes are made.
- The editor now handles config files that use different casing when it is allowed, rather than giving warnings.
- Prevented addition/removal/sleeping of ponies during games.
- Interaction target names are now case sensitive - for consistancy.
- Fixed some issues related to editing interactions.
- Fixed bug preventing creation of new profiles. (>>45378)
- Fixed crash that happened when certain ponies were deployed from houses. (>>45509)
- Fixed a crash that occured when editing a house that was also deploying a new pony.
- Fixed error that could cause Mac/Unix systems to not load the program fully. (>>45638)
- The program is now much more robust in the face of malformed .ini files and missing images.

Full download only:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/njt1ar24gdbqj0b/Desktop%20Ponies%20v1.42.2.9.zip

Due to several major changes to the program and ini files, there is no patch for this version. If you have customised anything, you will need to follow these steps:
- Copy any OC ponies into the ponies folder.
- Copy any custom houses into the houses folder.
- If you have edited any core pony.ini files, you will need to copy the new or modified lines into the new .ini files.
- If you have modified interactions.ini, you will need to copy the new or altered lines into the new .ini file.

If you simply overwrite the new .ini files with your customised old ones, some behaviors or interactions may be ignored because they have an invalid setup.

A note regarding interactions - names of target ponies are now case-sensitive. (e.g. 'twilight sparkle' won't work. You need the exact casing of 'Twilight Sparkle'.) You may need to double-check the names for any custom interactions as they will likely be incorrect - and the interaction will be ignored.

Considering how her gallery is full of nothing but crappy recolors (incuding the infamous black and red variety) and minor variations applied to other people's animations, I would say the NMN Pinkie is stolen and she screwed up the resize rate when she tried to reupload it to her own DA.

I might be wrong of course, but still, this chick and her DA gallery are fishy as hell.

Okay, I just noticed that there seems to be something wrong with interactions. They won't trigger if there are more ponies present than necessary for the interaction.
For example, if you start up Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon and any other character, DT and SS will never do their secret hoofshake interaction. Only with the third character removed, the interaction will work again.

I made a small mistake with the Zecora interaction: it was optimized for my own version of her.

If you have downloaded the Shopkeeper before and had problems to get his interaction to work with standard Zecora, please use this line in her pony.def instead:

Behavior,"deal_zecora",0.05,3.7,3.5,0,"stand_zecora_right.gif","stand_zecora_left.gif",None,"","","",True,0,0,"Shopkeeper",True,,,"0,0","0,0",True,0

The text-file in the archive has now been updated, too. Sorry for the confusion.

One more editor-bug: when setting the image centers, the "previous" button won't always work correctly. If there are more than two behaviors, clicking the button on the second behavior will jump to the last one, skipping over the first behavior.
Clicking "previous" on the first behavior or on the second if there are only two will give an error mesage and close the program.

Here's the message:

Woo lots of bug squashing in this version, plus several new ponies. I've also added a "community links" thing which pulls a few useful links from the web. ok so I've noticed a weird thing with the houses. Sometimes the ponies get stuck at the door. You can't drag them but you can right click 'remove pony' to get them to go away. The thing is that it does not happen with every pony. Some ponies go away just fine. I believe all the ponies that have gotten stuck are the random ponies from the start. The ones that came from the house disappeared just fine as did the specifically selected ponies from the start.

Anyway it's awesome seeing all the little improvements you've made RoosterDragon. Just wanted you to know.

Sup!

Allow me to present the new engine prototype for DP, written in pure C.
Currently, it does not support anything except drawing and exiting on ESC key. However, since it`s using OpenGL 2.1, with a perspective of additionally using shader model 1.20 for texture compression, it is able to output 16 384 simultaneous instances of a single animation at a speed of 4 FPS (Core i5 2557M / 4GB / IntelHD 3000), while the current engine, given the speed, can only output ~600, with everything — interactions, moving, animation changing — switched off.

The picture attached is a RAR+PNG: just download it, then change extension to RAR, and extract. There you can find the binary to execute and the sources to compile it from.

Anyone of the dev team interested?

Hmm, I don't know if this was intentional, but it is now possible to click on the transparent parts of the sprites. As this can lead to effects blocking a pony from being dragged by the mouse, I don't really like this.

This would be great to stop the program sucking up so much CPU when running a ton of ponies.

I've noticed however (at least on my really crappy laptop) that running a single pony maxes out a core and I still only get 10 FPS. I'm almost certain this is a hardware issue on my cruddy laptop, as I've had similar numbers when I tried other methods that were hardware accelerated. If I don't use a transparent window, things speed back up to sensible levels - so I figure on my hardware it's the copying data from the GPU that stalls everything.

It'd be very cool to use an engine that could use the GPU so people could run silly numbers of pony if they wanted, but there'd have to be a way of detecting people with cruddy hardware like mine so we can do something sensible for them.

> it's the copying data from the GPU that stalls everything.
Yep, framebuffer readback is definitely a bottleneck. In my initial implementation it was done in a non-parallel manner, via glReadPixels() not backed by a PBO. This approach is rather slow by design, and also forces CPU to wait for GPU pipeline flush. Unfortunately, I do not own any PCs with discrete GPUs, which means I can`t reproduce the performance hit caused by real DMA through a real video bus, and somehow work it around.

What is more, having read the sources of the current DP sprite subsystem, I don`t think that my implementation would play well with it. This is mainly because of my wish to offload as much as possible to the GPU, including mouse input control, horizontal reflections (which are done simply by altering the texture u-coordinate inside a vertex shader; this will help get rid of the separate pictures for rightward and leftward directions), and position changing (just another PBO over an RGBA32F texture with height 1 and width equalling the total number of quads in a batch, where (R, G) pair means (X, Y) and (B, A) means (dX, dY)).

Considering what`s said above, it would be a lot easier for me to rewrite everything from scratch than try to integrate the two projects, one of which is implemented in a programming language I do not know. And I`m not sure if it`s even worth the effort when the existing implementation just works. Meh.
Thus, let this engine be just an experimental side project, which might or might not see the light of day.
Anyway, if you wish to continue, here`s a configurable modification in RAR/PNG. I`m intrested in 4 performance tests: !BGRA & !PBO, !BGRA & PBO, BGRA & !PBO, BGRA & PBO. Please also tell me the exact configuration of your machine (CPU, GPU, RAM, screen resolution and OS version).

Other testers are also very welcome: the more data, the better!

P.S.: BGRA flag means switching between two different formats in which pixels may be stored. If the requested format does not match the format that is native for a given GPU, all pixel DMA operations will suffer an additional step of bit swizzling. When the driver is able to perform it directly on GPU, the overhead is negligible, but otherwise the whole operation may be potentially slowed down by orders of magnitude.

I am using a Mac (10.6.8) and I have followed the instructions in the readme.txt, and even after downloading everything, when I click on the RunOnMac.command, it opens some text up in "Terminal" and then that's it? Am I doing something wrong? I know nothing of this type of stuff, but I would really love to play with the ponies. :C
>> No. 45931
>>45928
Toggling the BGRA flag was a no-op in both tests. Setting the PBO flag halved the framerate from ~12 to ~6 in both tests. Tested with 1 pony in all cases.

I'm no hardware buff so you'll have to bear with me if I've screwed this up.
Win 7 SP1
AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-72 2.1 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
1366x768
4 GB RAM (not sure of the speed)

I imagine whatever pipe handles memory transfer from the GPU is just poor on bandwidth. If I hardcode the program to render in 683x768 (i.e. half the pixels) then my framerate doubles to 24. Half again to 683x384 and I'm up to 48. A strong implication the limiting factor is just the amount of data being transferred. (I don't know enough to actually be sure of this, just stating what seems to be likely.)

Hope that helps.

Anyway, as far as implementing it goes - you're quite right in that it'd just for be technical fun at this stage - rendering silly amounts of pony with decent performance isn't a priority (the most important thing I do by far is adding new ponies in to the download when people post them, the second most important thing in unbreaking things that I probably shouldn't have broken in the first place :P)

You'll never reimplement Desktop Ponies fully - it's complex, inelegant and most importantly almost entirely undocumented spaghetti logic. You could make a simple copy but that'd be boring.

I think it'd be way cooler to actually implement the interface required so that it could actually be used in Desktop Ponies. You could do it all in C and we could just wire up a wrapper in the C# world. Alternatively there are C# bindings for OpenGL so you could try it that way if you fancied.

I think it'd be a fairly neat thing to pull off. Up to you really.

Asynchronous readback that is twice slower than synchronous?!
Mmmmmkay. Apparently, average GPUs just don`t cut it. Let`s go for something different.

← This version uses pure GDI, without any OpenGL whatsoever. Microsoft say that GDI, unlike GDI+, is partially hardware accelerated, so I decided to give it a try. Dragging sprites around is already supported, depth-reordering is (yet) not.
BTW, it is maybe worth combining GDI and OGL. For example, let there be some configurable sprite number threshold to switch between them, GDI being the default.

P.S.:
I`m still not sure whether I want to just implement the new sprite library or try and rewrite DP from scratch. Either way, I will keep you updated if you want me to.

[UPD:]
Forgot to add. The difference between unique instances and duplicates is that a duplicate does not generate a separate decoded GIF image, thus consuming no RAM. From the point of performance, uniques and duplicates are identical.

Finally got around to trying this. Indeed GDI is noticeably faster (I can run about 105 Luna at the target framerate of 25 FPS, but the GDI solution can handle about 180).

Calling GDI functions is not much effort either, so I hooked them into the existing engine and got the same speedup. Woo.

That was with 32bbp bitmaps though, and I need to use indexed bitmaps otherwise the memory usage is unacceptable. For the life of me I couldn't get CreateDIBSection/SetDIBColorTable to work in an indexed mode. They appear to succeed but I only get blank images. I'm also hoping the speedup isn't just a side effect of being in the 32bbp format.

> I'm also hoping the speedup isn't just a side effect of being in the 32bbp format.
It isn`t.

This RAR / PNG contains proof-of-concept 8 BPP DIB alpha-blending code.
The funny thing is that I actually do not use GDI to alpha-blend, just because GDI seems to be incapable of doing it in 8-bit mode.
Even funnier is the fact that my code that just operates on memory regions using bare CPU is twice faster than AlphaBlend() from WinXP, and 2-3 FPS faster than AlphaBlend() from Win7 / Win8.
This suggests getting rid of DIBs altogether, but I`m not yet finished substituting them with memory chunks, so let there be DIBs (not for long though).

Dragging and depth-sorting are now fully available, but the code that manages palettes is still a bit rough and requires a brush-up. In particular, it relies heavily on the availability of the global palette.
To benchmark the speed of blending with less-than-FF alpha channel, go to GIF/GIF_GDI.c and comment out the block starting on line 163, then uncomment the one that begins on 169, and recompile.
>> No. 45940
>>45938
Ha that's certainly one way to work around it. I was able to replicate your results in the current engine. Plenty of old code I'll have to remove or tidy up as a result, but it mostly works and is still roughly as fast.

It'll be a while before I have the time to do that, so feel free to chip in with whatever efficiency magic you can conjure up regarding switching to plain chunks of memory and forgoing DIBs, or anything else that comes to mind.

The alpha blending test only takes off 2-3 FPS (from 25 originally) compared to having opaque images, which is pretty damned good considering it was being applied to every pixel. In practise there are so few translucent pixels that it will basically be a free operation I think.

I've made changes in this version that borrow the technique of creating a DIB and futzing with the raw pixels for blending. Thanks for your help, it was damned useful. If you find any other magic tricks I'll happily add them. I wonder if dividing the alpha blending method among threads would yield an improvement at all - the program spends like 75% of its time in that method.

Heads up, it`s me again. Finally, I fixed a truckload of bugs in my GIF decoder made memory-based approach work.
Just in case, the decoder still relies on global palette, and reserves index 0xFF for transparency color.
On my machine, the whole algo now works 1.5 times faster than the previous version.

Now the more interesting part. I`ve got a couple of new ideas how to lower the resource usage.
One of them is not to use separate mirrored images but generate them on the fly: either way we ourselves are in charge of rendering. The special cases where no mirroring shall be performed — like, say, Twilight with an eyepatch — have to be explicitly defined in configs.
Another idea is to turn the very pixel-art-ish style of DP into a memory advantage: the majority of sprites present in DP are just begging to be downscaled twice. This would cost us nothing but cut memory usage fourfold. Coupled with the previous idea, it gives us eight times less RAM consumed.

I`ve already downsampled most of the sprites myself (except the very latest and those whose presicion does not allow downsampling) and implemented realtime rescaling.
And yes, on top of everything the algo is easily paralleled. The current implementation (see URL below; no RAR+PNG here due to excess size of animations) is able to run an arbitary number of threads, optimally equalling the number of CPU cores on the machine. For now, they are created ad-hoc, but the probably better approach is to keep all threads running until the program terminates and synchronizing them on a semaphore object.

OK, now the code: http://rghost.net/private/50586686/44954b22defe4677b680b5a5b7b6a5de
«Count limiter» control sets the number of sprites after which loading shall stop. Zero value equals loading everything (the current archive provides 916 sprites).

P.S.: my laptop is able to produce 27 FPS on that number, eating 80 megabytes of RAM and 25% of CPU time.
>> No. 45950
>>45949
I tried these ideas previously. At the time drawing the downscaled images proved to be slower, so I abandoned that (not a problem now we control the rendering, of course). The mirroring I half-implemented but never finished because Gtk (the UI layer that handles drawing on Unix/Mac) didn't handle it nicely.

Mainly however, I don't want to break the configs. I made minor breaking changes to interactions once and I hate myself for that. I don't want to break ports needlessly so I don't think I'll change the image sizes or how the configs work.

That said, mirrored or over-scaled images could be detected during loading and then fixed on the fly. I'll have to rework a few things to make that work. Well worth the saved memory though. Combined with the existing checks for removing duplicate frames and 4bbp indexing where possible, things will be pretty lean.

Another thought might be to get around to cropping transparent borders on all the images. That's a minor win - but does need config files to be updated too.

Ought to be pretty cool.

Otherwise she is looking good. Love the little detail you are putting in the hair to give it more of a crystalline feel.
