#Event
Last Event: >>/fic/105796
Accolades and previous event statistics: http://goo.gl/hgnDc
Current list of participants: http://goo.gl/XCVHc
Mock gallery: http://goo.gl/egwiK

All right, so for those of you who don’t know, /fic/ likes to run a little write-off every now and then. Typically, we’d hand out a prompt to the writers and they’d be on their jolly way for three days. It’s been a lot of fun, and you can check the link above to see how it’s all panned out in the past.

“Well, gee, that’s wonderful, but what’s this thread doing in /art/?” I hear you say. Simple: This time, the /art/isans the prompt, and from that prompt they’ll draw art that will inspire a story. Yes—your art will be the prompts for our stories.

The art will displayed in a gallery that looks similar to the mock one linked above, and the authors will look at them and go “Hot damn, that’s some good lookin’ pony.” Then some more pony happens, and it's all basically magic from there.

If you’d like to participate, simply drop your name below indicating so and I’ll add you to the list. Sound good? All right, then, here’s the details:

Times
• Prompt suggestions open Sunday, July 29th 23:00 UTC.
• Drawing begins Monday, July 30th 00:00 UTC (http://para.ms/time/2012-07-30).
• Submissions close Friday, August 3rd 00:00 UTC (http://para.ms/time/2012-08-03).
• /fic/ writing begins Friday, August 3rd 04:00 UTC.

This gives you 96 hours—4 days—to create your art.

Submissions
Submission information is at http://goo.gl/syCJb

Prompt
Prompt suggestions will be taken one hour before the event commences. A prompt pool will be made from those of these which are considered most suitable for the competition. A prompt will then be randomly chosen from this pool to be the competition’s prompt. The beginning of the event will be signaled by my announcing of the chosen prompt.

Rules
The rules of the event are:
(0) you start drawing only after the prompt is released;
(1) you submit before the deadline;
(2) your art is permissible for posting on Ponychan and EquestriaDaily;
(3) you (attempt to) remain anonymous until the event’s conclusion; and
(4) your art is not submitted elsewhere until the event’s conclusion.
I reserve the right to disqualify any entry with or without reason.

Rankings
The rankings of /art/works will be determined by how many authors choose to use each one.

The goal of the contest is to draw something that will inspire a story. What constitutes that... well, I can’t say for sure. That’s just a part of the challenge, innit?

/art/isans whose works are chosen by two or more authors can award an “Artist’s Choice” award to their favourite.

Well, I think that’s everything. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.
Good luck. Roger out.

The /fic/ thread for this event is now up at >>/fic/113502

To give you an idea of the sort of response you can expect from participation: last event had 29 entries, and the event before that 21. We may end up with a figure close to 40 fic entries this time around

Essentially, that means with the current four participants, each artwork would have ten fic interpretations of it. That's kinda crazy. Even with twenty /art/isans, each artwork will have most likely at least one, and on average two. That's pretty sweet odds, if you're asking me.

I'm not very good at selling things, but there's my pitch.

Time goes fast...

The prompt suggestions will start in about 20 hours. The prompt is chosen one hour later, at which point drawing will commence. Submissions close exactly four days (96 hours) later.

I hope everyone has fun, as that's the real bottom line here. All participation is greatly appreciated and welcome—it's the participation that really counts (community bonding and all that jazz). The inspiration behind these events has always been:

"The worst thing you ever wrote is better than the best thing you never did."

I feel the same applies to all artistic endeavours. Showing up is the hardest part.

You can submit as many prompt ideas as you like. You'll see them flying around during that hour. The best prompts are open-ended enough that they allow a good range of interpretation. They shouldn't lock anyone into a particular genre, character, crossover, etc.

As always, the prompt is more a guideline (a “prompt”, we might say) than an actual rule.

Scenery would be an interesting choice, since it allows a wider canvas for ideas (doesn't lock you into certain characters). Maybe the author already has an idea and just needs a setting to put it in?

Scenes (esp. climactic ones) will be the most popular, I reckon. I look at that and go “What lead up to this situation? How does it play out?” and then go from there. Contrast with that I might look at scenery or a portrait and just go “Well, that looks nice.”

I guess it depends if the author is going in with an idea or not.

I feel like this isn't helping. Hehehe.

Personal comments: Pinkie of the Opera was my favourite aesthetically, but I couldn't find anything to do with it. The hoof-sized keys are great. (I dunno much about art, though, so I can't offer much in the way of critique.)

It doesn't surprise me all that much. Speaking on my behalf, my entry was too... "literal". Not much room for maneuver.

It's vague stuff like Keepsake that let authors do whatever they want, something with less conditions to meet.

>>113757
Woo! Participation! (They really were horrible story prompts. I'm a teller, not a prompter...)

And Pinkie of the Opera is a favorite of mine, too. I knee I'd never have time to color so I went as tight on the pencils as I could without losing the energy of the sketch.

In my head she kept playing the opening bars to Bach's Toccata and Fugue but right at the lowest note she would transition into a bouncy rendition of "Heart and Soul" from the movie Big before leading the crowd in the seventh inning stretch and yelling CHARGE!

When it was done, I knew I needed a promptier prompt, so I did a second one with more side plots than I could shake a stick at (my favorite is Sweetie Belle, who is either about to perform or is just an understudy for Silver Spoon but either way looks like she's about to vomit...).

I had fun with these. We should try it again sometime now that I understand what the writers need a little better...

Keepsake was frickin' *brilliant* from a concept perspective, btw. You earned your medal, hands down.

Haha, awesome job, Filler.

I honestly didn't have any idea what to do with this so I just went with the first thing I associate with music. I'm glad someone thought of some story to go with it, in the end ^_^;

Next time (if there is a next time) I'll definitely try something more abstract. I wasn't really thinking in terms of what would inspire a range of interesting stories, but just what could tell a story.

Congrats to all who entered, personally I liked 'A Night At The Opera', 'Rainbow Dash Has New Headphones' and 'Bonbon's Dream' because I got some cool story ideas for those.

Dumb question: is it cool to start attention horseing my sketches on DA yet, or is it preferred to wait for the writing side to complete?

Totally cool. Double cool if you horse the event out too.

Awesome. I doubt a Pinkie Pie Pencil Sketch will grab much attention, but I'll drive any traffic toward the thread in /fic/.

The fact I didn't win is bullcrap.

So, uh, it's kind of hard to keep track of everything that's going on on the /fic/ side. How long until the we get to read the fics written for their drawings and choose our favourite?

From the /fic/ thread: Public voting begins Monday, August 13th 08:00 UTC, which is like 2AM Central Time.

So, in about 12 hours give or take.

Just wanted to say that I only got one fic off of my pictures - Bittersweet Music - but it was totally worth it for the Fancypants dialogue and the spin on AJ's expression. Makes me want to redraw the whole thing with some fancy Canterlot types in the crowd...
